- Van life is well and truly back and we are enjoying our lakeside location at El Chorro in Malaga province, southern Andalucia, its back to living in a van full time and loving life on the road again.... Well, most of the time anyways, van life definitely isn't always perfect as we share the highs and the lows of living in a van.

Don't waste your money on a new lamp cluster, you will still get the same problem. the fault with transits of this age is the earth wire from the lamp cluster to the van, (if you cut into it, you will see that it is blackened inside.
The easy fix is to run a new earth wire from a convenient point on the earth track of your lamp cluster, straight to the bodywork of the van, 100 % guaranteed. Happy travels.

Yes this exactly what I thought when you were talking about this. Often there is a black wire the earth screwed with a bolt to the bodywork near the lamps on both sides of the rear of your van. Earth connections in all situations like on a vehicle battery and even dry cells in say a torch oxidize. The secret is to unscrew the bolt, clean up the connecting wire end and rebolt it.
Good thing about older vans, the faults are already known

I was thinking the same thing but you beat me to it, have had this trouble in older cars in the distant past and cured the problem with a new earth wire ( the way you suggested ) 99.99% off the time, so yea give I go Nick you could save a load of money, and being ripped off by a garage doing the same thing and charging you telephone numbers for doing it, if you have a motor accessory shop near by they might sell a reel of single or double wire, like we have in the U.K., If double just part the black wire from the red and use........Well thought of Mr S.... P.S. do both sides of the van if ones corroded then the other is on its way, a bit of your time is saving you lots of money in the long run........good luck
My advice for a long and productive life for your laptops: Always put them on a flat surface, always !!
At 12:48 a laptop is shown sitting on a carpet-cloth ... that is a no no. I'm sure it worked out fine for you so far, but they overheat that way. And the fans cannot reach the bottom that way.
Place them on a flat smooth surface so that there is airflow underneath. Even though it doesn't look like much, it will keep them cooler. Battery and electronics inside will last for much longer. Great channel, guys. Keep travelling and enjoy life.

Put a new earth from the rear of the light unit to the chassis. Make sure it's clean connectors and it will probably sort it. Either way it won't harm anything and costs very little.

Hiya, I think I would be wondering how come there is no one else in that lovely spot. No flies or bugs I think I would be tempted to stay in that spot for as long as possible given that the crowds will be coming any day soon. Beautiful spot! Our heatwave over Scandinavia is over.. Big time.. This morning it was only 4 (!) C! At daytime, if sun maybee up to 15, but in general around 10-12 C.. In July.. Never been so cold as i can remember in my lifetime.. Brrrr! I hear troublesome news from Spain with a new wave of lockdown, especially in the north, Catalonia for instance, and also new regulations in Spain from tomorrow. Hello Sarah not sure if anyone has mentioned yet, concerning the lavender plant! I would firstly cut it back while it's struggling to survive. I'm not good with lavender plants either, but I know they don't like to be sitting in wet soil, or pots, and because they are an outdoor plant usually it might be a big ask to have the plant in the van with different temperatures. Have a look on You Tube and get some certain advice. All the best, great to see you back travelling.

It looks so lovely to stay by those lakes when there is no one but you there. You are sometimes too warm in Spain. We are too cold here in the north. We are having 10 to 12 degrees during day time. And we had hail on July 8th. This is about the same temperatures that we had this winter. And it is raining day in and day out. It is going to rain the whole next week here. I hope you will be able to fix that car problem by yourself. If the new earth wire doesn't do the trick, check that all the wires are properly connected.

Head up to Galicia, Temps are much better, around 27c. Water is fresh, so easy to cool down. Not many vanners here for some reason. Beaches are incredible and empty during the week. The further north you go the emptier it gets but temps drop too.

My little ones get obsessed when they see a squirrel and have a hard taking their mind off of it. Luckily they are behind a fence line or they would likely chase it to the end of the earth without looking back! Then it would like, ‘Mom! Where are you???’ Anyway, the place looks beautiful and relaxing. You are so fortunate to be outbound again. Read others comments about possibly another lockdown. Do you think you’d be better off going back home or staying out, and will they let you? Let’s hope things settle down, no more catastrophic illness . Stay well!
We really don’t know what to do, there are areas in Spain being locked down again, and it’s quite likely more will follow, we just have to take each day as it comes at the moment.. xx

Message to apprentice auto electrician Sarah. Well done with all the cleaning of the contacts. However, as everyone is telling you, you need a better earth. An easy bodge is to get a piece of wire, bare a little bit at the end. Take out one of the bulbs and jam the bare wire in down the side if the bulb when you replace it. (Being careful not to touch the live contacts that the bottom of the bulb touches.) The take the other end of the cable a a nearby screw or bolt that goes into a steel part of Vinnie (not plastic). Vinnie's lights will shine like the top of the Chrysler building! Guaranteed to pass the ITV. (You will see the difference). It maybe easier to choose the indicater bulb, rather than the brake-light, as that is a single filament bulb.
Nick and Sarah I have loved and followed you from here in New Zealand for ever, please can I say consider wearing a helmet when biking or doing any activity where falling off could result in brain hitting hard surface.

Yeah, we are loving it, even with the heat, which is tough down here this time of year, still fab to be back in the van😉👍
Regarding the lights wedge a peice of wire down the bulb holder so it makes a contact with the outer chrome of the bulb then connect the other end to an earth point on the body of the van possibly the bolt which holds the light cluster in place it should give you a better earth and stop the flickering

That's a bad earth when one light starts to dim when another is turned on, just run another earth wire to the bodywork making sure it has good contact with the metal van body, should fix it. Common problem.

Agree with the earth wire fix and sometimes just rubbing the lamp contacts with a soft pencil helps when there is nothing else available, all the best, what a fantastic location.

MrSlugbait, beat me to it, yes re-earth to chassis. My old self build failed on a cracked rear light cluster a few years back, not all ITV stations are the same. Stay safe.
It’s a bad Earth which causes a problem with the lights clean all your connections and put it back together it should work fine It’s usually the wire connections to the light lens itself use a small file to get inside the connection and clean the connectors on the main wires

Wish we had some of that nice weather in Wales. We've just had rain and more rain for the last few days. Have you ever had problems with the dogs running off? I never let my westie off the lead as I'm afraid he would not come back. Hope you lavender is working. Mine isn't doing anything, but it doesn't have flowers on it yet. Sarah, if there is a hole somewhere near the edge of your glasses, you can try sewing it together with needle and thread. I had to do a quick fix the other day on a pair of eyeglasses for my husband. Or you can try melting the two pieces together.

Hi, a nice video and great views too, very pleasant to watch. I've just purchased a couple of those rear light clusters for my van, it cost £95 for the pair, once they get corroded they are forever playing up no matter how often you clean the connections. The plating corrodes away and the bulbs just connect straight onto the steel surround, the earth wire is probably the problem with your van but it's worth getting new lights while you can still get them, to give a lot more years service, I say.

Hi, a trick that we have always used in Spain to cool the drinks, when you are near a river or a lake, is to put it in the water right on the shore, inside a basket or a bag, and holding it with a rope or a big stone so that it is not carried by the streams of water

How weird is this ......I am having the same problem with my transit van. Sarah's doing the correct thing by cleaning the terminals - but put a light smidgen of grease on them to help prevent more corrosion. Also, like a previous viewer advised about the earth which will be bolted onto the bodywork, disonnect that and clean the earth terminals again and also where the earth bolts to the bodywork clean that area with sandpaper to get clean metal, add some grease and reconnect the earth. Cut the plastic from around the connectors and solder the wires from the van direct. Done hundreds of these on transit and escort vans.
With the light you can try puting some light globes that a about 5w less than you have right now. The voltage drop your experiencing that is causing the parking light to dim will be due to a poor connection or poor connection on the parking/indicator circuit possibly the fuse connection. You should identify the earth/ground connection for the light cluster it will be the metal strip that is common the parking/indicator/brake/reversing lights. If you attach a wire to that connection and to a good clean to the bear metal body of the van and notice the dimming stops the it will be the earth/ground connection.
Note!!! Make sure the earth/ground connection that you attach the temp test wire is in fact the earth/ground and not a switched12vdc power connection as you may pop a fuse when you short to a clean metal body ground.
In some cars the earth/ground connection is wired back to a earthing point and that will be where there is most likley some corrosion there and you may been the do some google research as to where that is or you could wire a temp earth/ground connection for now (not the best fix but will do).
The Fuse scenario, possibility one of the spade fuses may have some corrosion. The aluminum spades get some corrosion (white powdery crud) usually removing and reinserting the fuse fixes this other wise replace the fuse with a new one of the correct rating. Most rear light circuits are on a 10-20A fuse so worth buying some they are usually only a few dollars for a pack of four.

Have you tryed to cross new boarder ? Best thing to keep in a van. Duct tape and super glue. Glue that arm on so its useable. May not be able to fold them but you can still use it. My coffee I use Folgers dark silk. 12 cups Then 2 cans evaporated milk , 1 can sweetened condensed milk. 2 tablespoons vanilla. Makes a gal. So yummy sorry I have a frig. Last me a 4-5 days

You can maybe save Lavinia, but it will be close! Here goes. As an earlier comment below says, she's from a hot climate. She needs sun LIGHT 🌞, not heat from the van. But, the most important thing for her is the soil. Yours is too rich. It needs rough, stoney and sandy soil. From the looks of it, just the stuff around you would be better than what is in the pot. Keep 1/3 of existing soil and mix in 2/3 sand and gritty soil from your area. If you can move her into a breathable pot that would also help, ie terracotta, although obviously not ideal in a van, it's what she needs. Finally, water only a little and not every day. For her size, one shot glass per day would be about right. Just think about the amount of rain that falls on the lavender fields of Provence and you'll get the idea 💡
Ironically, Lavinia is dying from too much love. If you change her soil and put her in a big terracotta pot on your terrace at home, and leave her, my guess is that she will thrive.

A suggestion, go higher refreshing yourselves and show us the Nevada Sierra (Granada), near where you are.

I want to say check the wiring against the good one one make sure they are wired exactly like same. If they are wired the same then you can try switching the light socket then try the lights to see if the problem moves to the other side of the vehicle. Also before you do that swap both light units and try them to see if the problem moves to the other side.

I'm in Washington state USA, here the "mot" doesn't need to be done after 21 years (of any car, van, or RV's age) thank the Lord! Mine is a 1989...so I can keep it on the road as long as I can keep it running. 💓

Get your self a proper car fridge they use about 1/4 of the power of your yellow cooler. We bought a 40L ALDI fridge 5 years ago on one of the special buys for $399 which was half the price of a Waeco fridge/freezer has the same Danfoss refrigerant compressor and happily holds the temperature at -3C on a 30C day.
That would be nice, but unfortunately we don’t have 100’s to spend on a fridge, we would need a new van before a new fridge, lol xx

Pick up a 12v soldering iron, some solder and flux then lightly solder the track on the light, solder doesn't corrode like copper.

If you have a shaker for making cocktails you can make frappe in that as well, I have the frappe wisk but prefer the shaker, having had a bar on the greek island of Paros I had the professional frappe mixer. Try it out. Let me know how you do. Great channel you two +2.

That was a common problem on older transits, I think it's the metal the they used in the lights try a separate wire from a good point on the light to the body near the light, dependant on the tools you have looks beautiful there.

Will be the main earth wire to the light fitting. Replace spade connector to it and clean the other connector on fitting with fibreglass pen cleaning tool... should work..

The bulb holders are the same in a Escort van and a P100 pick up. I'm not 100% sure if you bought the rear light that it will come with the bulb holders. I think they are sold separately . I'd look into buying the light sooner rather than later as I doubt main dealers will stock them anymore. Ford Germany are normally better for old stock. I've got a couple of second hand ones in stock in the Uk but I'm not sure if they are going to be better than yours otherwise I'd send you one. I'll have a look at the condition in the morning when I'm in work.

I've got mine with me now and they are slightly different. I think mine must be out of a MK4 then. Mine are deeper. So I've got MK4 and 5 but no threes. Fingers crossed you get it sorted . Really wanted to help you out ☹️.
Hi again. I did a TH-cam search about my problem (same as yours) and watched this video by a TH-camr........LM Auto Repars. He went over the same problem with his transit in quite some detail. Title of video is.......'Ford Transit rear lights not working correctly. Fault finding and repair.' He's a helpful guy and responded to me within a few hours. Might help you with your issue, your lights are working so it probably is an earth problem preventing full current getting through the bulbs.... Good luck.

I think the new lights are only about $40-ish worth the money. We have an old car that had bad cloudy lights, all replaced. Very worth it.

Hi your problems with the light is a earth to the body of the van.look in side where th lights fit for a wire that's bolted inner body.thst your problem

If the fault is just with one Bulb area just replace the white cartridge the bulb sits on ...they only like three quid off eBay just type in the part number that you see on the white casing and it will come up
