@Muhammed Khan no! he was such an icon and only known as a comedian, that people just never took anything from him seriously and even when he was serious, people started laughing thinking he was joking and being 'funny', it's like watching a mr. bean episode, when bean starts crying and you laugh cause you think it's an act, but it could be serious

For all these kids saying "This is soooo relevant today" don't understand that the older generations see where all this social unrest will take us. They don't seem to grasp that we've been through this before, the names may be different but there are not many problems today that humanity has never seen before. The meaning of that old saying 'If you ignore history you are doomed to repeat it' must have flown right over these kids' heads. Every generation of young people have worried that we are a few years away from the end of the world, and every generation of young people believe today's social issues are completely unique.

"the more we change, the more we stay the same"
this is basically what the speech warns of, because while we have advanced, and to an extent evolved, we haven't truly changed. the negative mentalities of old are still plaguing the new generation because of those in the older generation who have the problem and won't let go of it. new problems keep spriging up due to the effect of this form of aged negativity, and i personally agree with one thing that the speech is essentially saying, it needs to stop.

We can't just treat everyone like they're children that we need to take care of. People need to grow up, face the hard work and suffering of life, and learn to over come it. We can't turn society into the oedipal mother devouring her children.

The film was actually written, and had started shooting just before the war broke out. Even the UK wanted to Ban the film due to its criticisms/mockery of a certain man… But the UK revoked that decision when we joined the war at the end of ‘39. The ending was also allegedly changed from a whole comedy bit, to the now famous speech where Chaplin breaks character due to Germany invading France.
