This was soooo incredibly helpful. I will have to rewatch and take notes. Omg wow! I’m so glad I watched this. Gah. So many things apply to me. It’s been the single most helpful vid since starting to make dolls.
OMG listening to this has given me so much stress. I sale small posable dolls on Etsy and I just make and sale them. I have not made enough money to worry about all these things as of yet. This is all a bit overwhelming but appreciate all your info
Just take it one step at a time. Make a little list of the most pressing things. Tackle them when you have time. Make another list...carry on. Rome wasn't built in one day 😊
Absolutely wonderful video! Lovely to see you also! Love your dolls. Marketing is definitely my downfall...I must get better but it always takes sooooo much time 😅
I loved hearing about all of your advice on this subject, you did an excellent thorough job on explaining everything. Can't wait to see your next doll for sale!
HELLO FROM BRASIL! I am a doll maker who specialise in making black dolls and I sell nationally(Brasil) but I am looking to expand my market dueto requests from folks internationally. My problem is setting up a website and opening a store online. Thank you for this video, very helpful. This is the first time coming across your videos, new subscriber:) Renee in Sao Paulo.
i have an important question that holds me back from start selling, should i be a sole proprietor or a LLC?? would i have any consequences if i don't sell anything for a year in my business tax declaration?? what if i rather to go as an informal business because making dolls is just my 2nd income and i don't sell them full time?? all those kind of financial things scare me so much
The difference in turning a sole proprietorship into an LLC is that you will create a separate bank account for your LLC and keep your doll business income coming and going through there so that it is "separate" from your day to day finances and banking. By creating an LLC and keeping a separate banking account, the LLC protects you from liability. With an LLC, if someone sues you (legal), you could only loose the finances related to that LLC business, and they could not sue you for your personal funds. Hope that helps! (To create an LLC, you will need a TIN/EIN for your business, and in my state, I have to file a yearly fee for my business. As a sole proprietor, I only had to create a DBA for the business name.) Filing taxes at the end of the year is the same for both.. no difference there. They are literally processed the same for taxes.
Depends on where you live, what licenses you need to operate a business. To open an Etsy shop you do not need a license, as many people sell on Etsy destash items or even as a hobby.
Wow! Thank you so much for all the information. It's really helpful and so many questions to ask. my first question is - you mentioned about shipping you dolls with lavender., how would the buyer prevent the doll from getting bugs? If the kids play with the dolls what would you do? what is the life span of natural used materials for these types of dolls?
Well, I have made dolls for 15 years and I have dolls at home and they have never gotten bugs. I guess recommending to clean regularly, vacuuming the doll to remove debris and giving them a bath once a year should be more than enough. My kids played with their dolls all the time, and they did not get too crusty. I did wash them once a year and that did the trick. The lifespan of natural materials is very long, as long as they are cared for. My daughters have dolls I made for them 15 years ago and while they don't look brand new, especially because they played a lot with their dolls for many years, the dolls are still in perfect condition...just a little softer and their hair a little more tousled, that's all.
Yes! Artist dolls usually fetch higher prices due to the time, skill and experience involved in creating them. Not to mention most of the time, collector dolls cost quite a bit more to make as you use fancy/vintage/high end materials.
No idea. I don't deal with reborns or kits. I think however that you must check on the restrictions on the actual kit you buy. Some reborn artists allow sales from their kits. Best you get in touch with the actual artist.
There's an entire series on my TH-cam channel called Hansel and Gretel that introduces you to how to make the dolls. If you want to learn directly from me, you can take one of my classes and check out my schedule here: www.figandme.com/workshops
Depending on where you are, you need to research the rules on toys/dolls that are made for children. That can be as simple as labeling, other times you need to run certain tests and there are some materials that you are not allowed to use on dolls that will be played with. Best of luck on your making journey!

unfortunately I cannot help you with that. you need to talk to a professional accountant and what applies to you in your state.

custom repaint OOAK dolls actually sell for up to 1000.00 on Etsy, especially custom repaint Blythe dolls.
