    By the way, the guy behind the band in the red shirt is Pablo Gonzalez, Ale’s bass teacher and the band’s overall mentor. Pablo is the bassist for the Mexican soft-rock group, Los Claxons. He appeared as guest bassist in one of the songs in the Teatro Metropolitan concert - only publicly available as fan recording. Pablo plays a 6-string bass. There is video of Ale taking lessons and playing that 6-string bass. Pau uses Ableton Live in later performances.

      I’m probably repeating myself, but I’d be very surprised if they didn’t eventually make the whole show public. It’s a goldmine of promotional material, every time they release a new song people go nuts because every single song is world-class.

    • @don-music
      @don-music  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      true... but they could throw it into a blue ray or something.... with extras.... maybe even a couple of tracks could have alternate views with reactions by the band... I'd buy that!

    When I saw this video years ago, I kept rewinding it because I could not believe what I was seeing. No, I thought. She can’t be…..is she striking her cymbals on the upstroke? Her hands are so fast that it seems the camera is almost playing a trick on my eyes, but yes, I believe she is striking on her upstroke. She has always had a distinctive style (I think because of her limited stature), but come on….what she does, at this age, it just ain’t supposed to happen.
    It was performances from this era that first led me to use the moniker “outlaw drummer, and stealer of hearts”. You could not help but fall in love with her fire, drive and indomitable will. Standing between Pau and where she wants to go is a fool’s errand. Wether it is with her musical genius, or her dogged nature she will go through you if needs be.

    • @don-music
      @don-music  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      extremely well said, roy! And yea multiple folks are telling me about the upstrokes now.. and I honestly didn't take in about that in the video much, so will need to look maybe with slow motion and see if I can tell! I absolutely wouldn't put it past Pau to do that and to make it so convincing that you can't hear any flaws

    Great breakdown of this performance. Reminds me a little bit of when I was an aspiring rock and roller in 8th grade (1981)
    and a group of 9th graders played for the school in our gym. Only a year older and I looked up to them in awe. The principal was less than thrilled when they played Highway To Hell lol

    This concert was a few months after they released the "Escape the Mind" EP and a couple of months prior to them attending the Berklee College of Music summer session. Because Ale and Pau were under age for the summer session, they had to attend a 1 week orientation to determine their level of playing. The age for the summer session was 15 and over. Ale was 10, and Pau 13 playing at a 15+ year old level. Ale had only been playing bass 3 years at this time.
    The guy who couldn't fix the microphone during the "Crazy Train" song was Dany's guitar teacher at the time. Good as a music instructor, not as a roadie.
    I don't know if you have seen this video or not of them practicing "Hysteria". Ale has only been playing bass for about a year at age 8 when she learned the bass lines. It is worth watching. This is easy for her. The sound is a little raw because it was recorded on a phone. th-cam.com/video/P-IuRNVMsx0/w-d-xo.html

    I love this whole concert! It was less than a year after the famous Enter Sandman cover. During that time they wrote, recorded and released their Escape the Mind EP. But more importantly in the long run, they put all the pieces in place to go forward as a trio. As you point out, here Ale adjusts the bass part - brilliantly! - to keep the groove of the song going from start to finish. That wasn't the case yet with Enter Sandman, which almost stalls out for a couple bars during the guitar solo.
    Pretty sure they're playing to a click track...

    It has always appeared to me that Ale not infrequently plays what amounts to rhythm guitar when Dany solos or otherwise plays lead. I suppose it's more apparent when they played covers, since many of the bands they covered had two guitars, while their own music is of course written for a single guitar. Watching Trey Salazar's compilation of this concert, I see that I commented that Ale did that on Fade Away also. I suppose it's particularly apparent here because Ale really was playing a guitar part.

    Absolutely amazing performance!! Pau was incredible!! Great reaction and analysis!!!
    The sound guys seem to be very impressed by Pau...haha. The guy you mentioned by the orange amp is Dany's guitar teacher...so blown away by Pau and so eager to tell Pablo (you know him, in a red t-shirt)...you can see his sign of "head-blowing") hahaha.
    Yeah, I like the interesting chords, great song...and Dany seems true to the original and also with a lot of energy, she plays those parts with down strokes unlike some covers in which they strum up and down and it's just not the same, sounds softer and less even.
    I hadn't noticed that Ale plays the second guitar part there...good to know, sounds great... good bass by Ale.
    It was so good that you know the song so well. Great great review man!!
    Many people have said about Pau's upstrokes (in the original and here)... I think it's just down strokes but in a somewhat forward movement, but i'm not sure.
    About her settings, back then she used the cymbals at an angle, which looks normal but now she has everything so flat, completely flat except for a little tilt on the china (now on the right but here on the left) and an almost unnoticeable tilt on the ride.
    Also...she uses a high-hat on the right (idk if you've noticed). It's fixed slightly open, a tiny bit more open than a standard "tss-tss" sound and it's not on a high-hat stand. She doesn't use it that much but got used to it and remains there to date... it's played for instance in D2D (on the part with double kicks) and Narcisista...

    • @don-music
      @don-music  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      cool info thanks!!! This song is super powerful, lyrically and musically, and such a great choice for a band to do... and from my experience I can confirm that it's more complex and difficult than it seems.... they just rocked it so hard, and Dany really grasped the concept of the grunge energy over accuracy thing in her playing and singing... it's critical to giving it the energy it deserves. Thanks for the kudos!
      Yea the upstrokes thing - I didn't actually notice, dang it, so now I need to look again with a microscope.... Not sure if/why she would need to do it from what I saw, but it's totally possible she did it and I just totally overlooked it! Thanks, I'll investigate!

      "Concept of the grunge energy over accuracy thing" ...I like that, hahaha.
      About the energy, Dany's guitar always sounds powerful and energetic, so i totally get the concept. When I first saw this I watched two other covers, one was 6 piece with great vocals but didn't sound as good at all, less energy and on both played guitar struming up and down instead of the good propper "chunk chunk" with only down strokes.
      Yeah, powerful and complex song... later I'll listen to the FF original and this one again cause i don't have it so fresh.
      I think there's no upstrokes but just that Pau hits almost with the tip of the stick and like in a forward motion...IDK, i'll check on that later.

    • @don-music
      @don-music  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      awesome! yes please check it too... I did and I'm still uncertain, to be honest, about pau's upstroke possibilities... I suppose someone could ask her? someone with some pull with the band, if there is such a thing still as they become world famous rock stars... maybe a top tier patreon or someone. But then Pau prob doesn't even remember what she did any more LoL

    • @monicamansour3525
      @monicamansour3525 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@don-music
      It's all just normal down strokes, I'm quite sure now, no boubt. If you watch it in slow-mo you can see it.
      What happens is that Pau raises her arms up high right after hitting the cymbals and it's all so fast that it looks like just one movement, but it's not.
      See, the upward movement is so much bigger and at such speed it is very deceiving, that's all.
      About the unusual high-hat on the right side, you can see it in the begining when the Pau-cam moves to the right...in case it didn't catch your eye. It's to the far right.

    I do believe they were playing with a click track. Of the videos that's on TH-cam for this show. Not one song starts with Dany, Pau & Ale looking at each other or Pau hitting her sticks together 1 - 2 - 3 to start on time.
    At this point. They didn't need a backing track since the EP *(Escape the Mind)* was only suppose to be a learning project. Nothing lavish with extra instruments beyond a three piece band.
    *Trivia Tibit:* Basically - isn't Led Zeppelin a three piece band??
    *Think about it.*
    Bonzo on drums
    Page on guitar
    Paul Jones on bass
    Plant only sings. He doesn't play an instrument.

      at this point I believe they already had in-earz for a click track which is both smart and very talented to use one without getting distracted.
      I believe that Pau is also playing some parts on the upstroke which is rare even for pro drummers. Of course it's Pau.

      fair enough about click track... definitely no backing tracks though, yea... thx for info!!
      Technically I get your point about 3 piece - the instrumentation is the same, although of course because a vocalist who isn't playing an instrument it is much easier for both the instrumentalist and vocalist to do great, where as combining them is incredibly difficult to do very well. But yes.
      Ignoring the fact that Page was massively superior to most other guitarists for the immensity of his playing and his combining lead and rhythm live, my real point was that the Foos are not a 3 piece band, so covering them will always lack something.. but having Ale step up with the guitar part on bass in that section really made the difference for me.
