  • "Clan of The Fiery Cross" (Part 2)
Originally broadcast on June 11, 1946
    From Superman Wiki:
The Adventures of Superman was a radio show depicting the thrilling adventures of Superman, Lois Lane, Perry White and Jimmy Olsen. The show ran in various timeslots and formats from 1940 to 1951, in both an initial transcribed syndicated format and later on the Mutual and ABC radio networks (sponsored for several years by Kellogg's Pep, from 1943 until 1947).
The character created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster arrived on radio not long after the comic book, and took on an added dimension with Clayton "Bud" Collyer in the title role. During World War II and the post-war years, the juvenile adventure radio serial was a huge success, with many listeners following the quest for "truth, justice and the American way" in the daily radio broadcasts, the comic book stories and the newspaper comic strip.
The series is also credited with dealing a powerful blow against the Ku Klux Klan's prospects in the northern USA. The human rights activist, Stetson Kennedy, infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan and other racist/terrorist groups. Concerned that the organization had too strong connections to the government and police forces, Kennedy decided to use his findings to strike at the Klan in a different way. He contacted the producers of "The Adventures of Superman" radio series and proposed a story where the superhero battles the Klan. The producers, looking for new villains, eagerly agreed to the idea. The result was a series of episodes, "Clan of the Fiery Cross," in which Superman took on the Klan.

The dialect of the 1930s is beyond precious! Thank you for posting this important landmark in the career of the man of steel. The producers took a serious chance airing this episode, especially since it has been said this story used real life customs of the KKK. It's fun to read about heroes stopping evil threats. But a threat that actually exists? Man they had some real guts!

The thing that people today don't know is that, back in the day, the bad guys Superman fought were all basically ripped from the headlines.
In the first couple issues of his comic he faced off against a lynch mob, a war profiteer and the negligent owner of a dangerous mining operation.
He was a straight up social avenger back then.

You're quite right, but you forgot to mention that in the first Superman story (in "Action Comics" Number 1), the Man of Steel, at one point, knocks out a wife beater. That would have been considered pretty progressive in those days since this was a time when domestic violence wasn't taken seriously and was regarded as simply a "family matter." Besides, a lot of people at that time had the twisted idea that if a wife was beaten by her husband, she probably did something to deserve it or generally didn't "stay in her place" (no Women's Lib in those days you know). Luckily, Superman didn't adhere to such misogynistic thinking.
Most people, even Superman fans, don't realize how liberal he really was. His attitude towards war profiteers shows that he was originally a dedicated pacifist. In one story, he singlehandedly stopped a war between two fictitious countries by grabbing the respective rulers of the two nations, throwing them onto the battlefield between the opposing armies, and telling the rulers to fight it out between themselves. However, the two men spent more time insulting each other than engaging in physical combat and the soldiers soon became so disgusted with it all, that they called off the whole war and went home. Under the circumstances, I think Superman would probably have agreed with President Eisenhower's feelings about what he called "the Military-Industrial Complex." Would he have also been against the Vietnam War or any of the other controversial U.S. Military interventions (Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.)? Perhaps. Considering his obvious liberalism, would he be the subject of criticism and ridicule from Fox News or any of the ultra-rightwing firebrands like Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Michael Savage, and the like? What do you think?

I think you're conflating freedom (what Superman actually stood for) with leftism, which results in tyrants like Hitler and Stalin. Never forget, the KKK is, at its roots, a Democrat organization, whereas the Republican party was founded to free the slaves.

Lol, I can imagine if a klan member heard this and thought it was supposed to talked about the good things about the Group, only to realize that this was to reveal their bad activities, and show they are the bad guys. He would say, "Oh!"

It was adapted into a graphic novel, Superman Smashes the Klan, the very same year you made this comment. Additionally, at least one of the old Max Fleischer cartoons included Nazis dressed up like the KKK in what may have been a direct reference to the group (which, prior to this very radio program, wielded a considerable amount of political power in America; Clan of the Fiery Cross undermined their membership numbers so severely that it singlehandedly reduced them to the fringe group they are today).

The Klan at the time, while it concentrated on Blacks, was also opposed to Jews and Catholics. The more modern Klan is perhaps even more focused against Jews.

+mzk1 Nowadays it's not only against other races and religions not their own it's also against homosexuals or gays as well. Since that way of life isn't really seen as normal.

***** The sponsor had to cooperate. Three for-profit corporations, Kellogg's, the Mutual Broadcasting Network, and DC Comics, took a courageous stand. Capitalism at its finest.
