    George Reeves
    Really a handsome , classy, debonair , gentleman ,
It's a shame that the producers paid him a very small salary ; for playing both parts really great.
Lois was a classic articulate , beauty !

I was in 2nd grade when the George Reeves Superman TV shows first hit the TV screens in the early 50s and have remained a loyal fan of the series ever since.

When Perry White's actor John Hamilton died suddenly in October 1958, it had an effect of stopping the production of the Superman series.

Could someone please explain WHY his cape is hanging down from his neck, instead of up against his neck like in EVERY other portrayal of Superman.....it is even worse in the Color Episodes. Please explain it has bothered me since the 1970's when I first saw them.
    Thank you!

Anybody that loves this show is OK with me. George Reeves is still my favorite Superman and I agree that the show's appeal was that it was grounded in some sort of reality. Nice review.

Truth, justice and the American way so far away today as truth has no meaning in a (R) life.

I was able to get my indoctrination into "Superman" in the 1960s and 1970s on WPIX-TV, Channel 11, New York...it also aired on WWOR-TV Channel 9 in the 1980's...I now have them on DVD

That's how I got my start, too. My mom fondly remembers the "Great Caesars Ghost" episode. As a kid, I often confused it with "A ghost for Scotland Yard". ha

I'm 32 and I this was my first exposure to Superman, too. I used to watch the reruns on Nick at Nite as a kid in the late '80s and early '90s. That's a good point you make about the bad guys in this. Superman gets to have all the credit as opposed to a regular bad guy. I think George was the best Clark ever.

I used to watch this program all the time as a kid and it was definitely one of my very favorite. The first season with a spunky Lois Lane played by Phyllis Coates is considered one of the best of the entire series due its gritty feel in some of the plots. No one on that first season believed the series would ever achieve the popularity it did. Boy were they wrong.

im 25 and i think thats pretty cool! i grew up in the 90s but was more drawn to tv reruns of old B&W shows than the stupid action flicks of the time
what happened to the film, cause you said you "used to have" surely they must be worth a bit now!

Thanks for the tribute to the best Superman. Mild-mannered reporter huh? not much difference in the protrayals of Kent and Superman though. Have to admit the first few seasons were better scripted. Gee, in the color episodes they had some awfully dumb crooks. George Reeves was the best.

I was just born when the last 2 seasons were filmed but grew up watching Superman each weekday for one hour from 4 to 5pm on WKBW Channel 7 Buffalo which ran for at least 30 years. It was my very fave show as a kid and still is close to one of my faves still. On my wall is a framed 8 x 10 B & W photo of George Reeves as Superman. Within the frame I have written, "George Reeves.....the REAL Superman".

That's awesome! They still run Superman on a channel called Heroes and Icons. I'm very happy about that. He was a great Superman.

Agree, agree.....and agree. I watched the reruns a few years earlier than you on WGN in Chicago. I found that for me this version of the Superman character flowed just fine with the Superman comics that I read. Reeves' appearance on I Love Lucy--not as the actor who plays Superman--but as Superman, knocked me out.

I watched TAOS as a child in the early sixties. Through adult eyes, I can see that the series (particularly the latter seasons) left a lot to be desired. Nevertheless, Reeves himself always remains watchable. Although I've enjoyed all the Man of Steel's film incarnations, for me, George will always be the man.

The take off Superman makes when he is on his way to save the shot Mole Man falling off the bridge is the absolute best take off I have ever seen in any Superman episode or movie it really looks like he "flew off"!!! Nice!!!!

I'm 29 and I watch this show. I love Superman and I watch all of it I can so that's the main reason but I do like the early shows quite a lot. In my opinion though, the color episodes don't hold up nearly as well. Season two was okay but season one was the only great one. Phyllis Coats was a much better Lois Lane than Noel Neil. Noel Neil just looked old to me as a kid. She still seems too old. She was younger than Reeves but she just came off as old to me.

Toning down violence wasn't a bad idea among my favorite westerns are Kung Fu, Little House on the Prarrie, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman and Paradise all of which have less violence than the westerns that ran back then. Yeah Kung Fu had Kung Fu which is fighting, but he seldom killed people on the show and the saw was about more than just the violence.

George Reeves portrayal of Superman was my first live action introduction. Then I seen Kirk Alyns - the first live action series- and I was 8 yrs old. Wowed by it. Now after seeing the much improved special effects today, the old series wouldn't hold up to this generations first time intro of Superman. I'm glad there has been updated versions. See, I have this dislike of watching old shows after seeing them multiple times. I don't understand how people can go on watching old stuff so many times! It's like hearing your grandparents tell you the same stories you heard many years. 🙈🙉🙊👴👵

    • @BurningRobotOil
      @BurningRobotOil  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I can agree to a certain point. Yeah, it'd get tiresome watching the same old stuff time and time again. Adventures of Superman currently runs on the Heroes and Icons cable channel. Some episodes I've not seen yet. Some episodes I watched when I was 8 or 9 years old on Saturday mornings, but kinda forgot over the years. Either way, I still enjoy them. The newer stuff is ok. I still prefer the Chris Reeve Superman films, but that's me.
