  • Welcome to Stumpy Creek, an On30 logging layout that I built a few years ago now. It was my first exhibition layout, shown at numerous local model railway exhibitions across Victoria, Australia, between 2006 and 2007. It was eventually sold to a private owner, so I could move on to the next projects...

This transcends craft and enters the realm of art. I hate to be just another gushing fan, but hey, this layout deserves it.

Could of fooled me Mr Pickard, would of thought it was based on the real thing, fantastic work, am downloading for future enjoyment and also to get ideas for my own model RR. Thank's for sharing....

This is loosely Australian (mainly dictated by some of the building materials and advertising material on fences etc), but there are certainly many American style features on the layout. Its very freelance, with modelling based on what I liked on the time, rather than any specific operation or influence.

Jawdropping! All of the clutter and "junkiness" add so much realism. As good a layout as I have ever seen.

Very nice work and detailing! I love the way everything fits. There's not a single stone or concrete retaining wall, which mar so many backwoods layouts, and the colour palette is subdued and consistent. What a great look!
So what about those "next projects" you moved on to...? 8-)

There are few words left.... Jaw Dropping comes to mind! True artistry mate! Wonder who the lucky guy is who owns it now?

Thanks for the comments. The big trees are "Sheoak" sappling branches, selected for straightness. Their bark texture is similar to the large bark lumps as found on pines. The branches are caspia cuttings (status, a dried flower), with ground foam foliage, glued into predrilled holes in the main trunk. They are similar in style to the trees as found on the "Red Stag" layout if you are familiar with that layout. Thanks for looking.

    Beautiful layout!!!
I also would love to know how you made those trees!
I'm starting an On30 layout, and would love to know.

Transcends craft & enters art for sure. Exquisitely beautiful & realistic looking modeling - but realism is spoiled by herky-jerky camera. Remember that every tiny movement is magnified by the scale of the art - and get a tripod!

A wonderful layout, but the music? I prefer the sound of locomotives.
