My Flowerhorn’s Impossible Recovery from Swim Bladder Disorder

- Pollock’s swim bladder disorder happened suddenly. About a week after, he stopped eating. Secondary symptoms were more holes in the head and nose area, and an open sore. B/c he was floating at the top of water all the time, his hump that was exposed to the air started to rot. It smelled like old rotting fish. Another week passed, and I tried the “Clear.” This entire time, I researched all that I could, phoned so many vets in the area and fish stores to find a fish vet, but I could not find any. I didn’t know what to do b/c he had swim bladder, holes in the head, and an open sore. I’ve never encountered something like this before.

I’ve seen videos where a needle was inserted into the fish to release the air for the swim bladder disorder. I’ve never done this before, and I wasn’t confident at all that I could do this successfully. So I decided to tackle the hole in the head and the open sore first. I used “Clear.” I didn’t film most of this and the procedure b/c I wanted 100% of my attention on him. Sorry. But if you search “Flowerhorn Clear Medicine” on youtube, you can find lots of videos where people force feed flowerhorns with this medicine.
The instruction was to feed 5 consecutive times in 5 days with around 30 to 50% water change each day. Well, after the first dose, he regurgitated all of the medicine into the water. The next day, he became nearly completely white, and didn’t move from one spot. I decided not to give him the next dose b/c I thought it would make things worse. Day by day, he got worse than before using the medicine. He didn’t move from one spot for nearly a week. I contemplated on the needle procedure to release the air from his swim bladder, but he was in a very weak state and I thought it would make things worse.
Days went by, and each day he would freak out and thrash around here and there, and float up to the top of the water completely limp. Some days he would barely breathe. He would make an eye contact with me, and I couldn’t look at him anymore.
So, a flowerhorn with swim bladder disorder, rotting head, holes in the head and nose area, an open sore, completely pale and weak and barely breathing, freaking out daily trying to sink…was there a chance of recovery? I thought to myself.
I thought about many different ways to give him peace. I thought about quick violent ways to do it, too. But I couldn’t get myself to do this. Maybe one tetra with no name that I barely noticed in a group of 10 or more that was in a similar situation… I couldn’t do this to Pollock.
Clove oil and vodka method:
The day the clove oil arrived was the day Pollock sank. I didn’t open the package until late at night. I actually didn’t want to do it that day. After I opened the package, and a few hours later, I heard a huge splash and I saw that he had sank. I was ecstatic. It gave me hope. I fed him but he didn’t take the food. However, he took around 2 pellets the next day, and more and more thereafter.
It was around the third day after he started eating pellets that the “burn” on his hump started to heal. And then, it kept on healing very fast. It was like magic.
Final thoughts:
I think he wasn’t completely healed from the hole in the head and it caused the swim bladder disorder. B/c he couldn’t swim down and was stressed out, his condition worsened and he got secondary infections. Of course not eating made things much worse.
I’m not sure using “Clear” helped the ordeal. Just one dose made him go completely pale and made him much more lethargic. I can’t say it didn’t help, either. Maybe it took a long time for the medicine to work. When the clove oil had arrived, it was around 2 weeks after the first and only dose of “Clear.”
I don’t know what’s in “Clear.” From my reading, it’s a cocktail of 3 different medicines. Many flowerhorn owners used it for hole in the head and it helped.

In the end, his swim bladder is back to normal, his head burn healed completely, open sore is gone, and there are scars where the holes in the head were.
This was the craziest recovery of any fish that I’ve ever kept. I’m so glad that he got better. He’s like a pet dog to me. I’m planning on getting him a bigger tank. Thank you so much for all the concerns past few months. You don’t know how much your kind words mean to me.

Hellow new subscribers and new comers to flowerhorns. Flowerhorns are solitary fish. Like bettas. He can't have tank mates b/c they would fight to death or get injured all of the time. There are some people who have successfully kept flowerhorns with other fish, but that's not common. This tank is empty on purpose. My flowerhorn is a very aggressive one. Every flowerhorn's temperament is different. I had to remove everything from the tank, b/c he injured himself a few times already. Lots of flowerhorns can injure themselves from trying to move any gravel, rocks, or decorations. They want to move everything out of the way especially when they get to sexual maturity. He is happy b/c it is empty. Any plants would get uprooted and chewed up.

In the wild, certain cichlid species live in an environment that is just water and sand. No plants, rocks, or sunken pirate ships.
I decided not to have sand or gravel b/c flowerhorns can be clumsy and eat it while eating food. Plus, by not having gravel or sand, I can keep the water quality at an optimum.
However, he has gotten quite big for this tank, so I am getting a new tank soon.

But how is "love" able to heal any infections, illnesses, whatever, by purely being "love" (with factual *doing nothing* as stated)?
If your pet has diarrhea and you love it, pet it, give it much attention, the diarrhea won't vanish. If your kid has fever due to an infection and you cuddle with him and treat him well, the fever isn't going to vanish. If your husband or wife has a broken leg and you love him or her, cook him or her nice food and care for him/her, the leg won't magically heal.
There is a thing called medical treatment, doctors, vets, antibiotics, etc.
You comment totally misses the point of the owner of this fish stating he literally didn't do anything and the fish suddenly was better. He was about to euthanize his fish because he said that the fish suffered and he probably thought it died anyway.
Sure, some infections will vanish on their own after a certain amount of time. If you catch the flu, it will take about two weeks until you feel better. Or it will kill you. That's how infections work.
But "love" doesn't change anything in the way bacteria, viruses, funghi or what not act in a body.

There hasn't been much research into this, but I've seen this situation once before. The current line of thought is that a blockage occurs between the bladder and the digestive tube, causing gas to be stuck in the bladder, causing the fish to always float. As their state deteriorates, the tissue surrounding the blockage deteriorates as well, and a well timed thrash can alleviate the blockage. In the case that I've seen similar to this, the fish had a full recovery and lived a normal life afterwards. Best wishes Pollock!
That makes sense.... I wonder if daily feeding can also be a cause of it. In nature a fish will naturally have periods of several days with no food and time for the digestive system to heal.

I had a Blue-Laced Wyandotte Hen last year: She was my favorite of my chickens. Last May, I fed her a Bark Scorpion, which are a huge pest in my house, and the chickens love to eat them, and usually never get stung. Well.. she was stung by this one, and its string neurotoxin literally paralyzed her. I tried hoisting her higher off the ground to rest, but she would just fall in the ground hard, which created open wounds.
A couple days later, I checked in her as she was still alive, but was getting worse. At this point, little green flies began buzzing all around her. The following day, she was practically knocking at Death's Door: I lifted her up, and something caught the corner of my eye, under her feathers: I lifted those feathers, and there were maggots everywhere; all over her wounds.
Needless to say, I very quickly looked it up, and discovered it was fly strike, so I read about treatment, took a bin, and filled it with warm, soapy water. We then dunked her in the water in order to drown and draw out all the maggots. As we did it, we found even more wounds with even more maggots in them. Needless to say, after lots of cutting the feathers covering the wounds and consistently dunking her in the water (she was so weak at this point she didn't even struggle), we eventually got all the maggots out. Then we treated the wounds, and quarantined her in our garage for a week, away from the other chickens, in a dry, safe place. She then began to recover pretty quickly. In a little over a week, she was strong enough to rejoin her sister hens, and she rejoined them. She made a full recovery from that whole ordeal.
Needless to say, the lesson learned here is if you are going to feed your chickens scorpions, be sure to cut off the stingers first!

Get over yourself, I'm comparing an animal to animal. What I'm attempting to get at is people often don't really care about fish, they don't speak, can't express pain, they're not fluffy and playful, so some people tend to not care. People buy fish all the time, don't know how to care for it, it dies, and it doesn't really matter to them

I'm so glad he's recovering! I wish there were more exotic vets who are trained to work with fish.
My goldfish that I managed to get to live a good 8 years developed this upside down swimming thing after 2 years and he got better, finally managing to right himself. I started feeding him pellets rather than flakes. Unfortunately he got it again years later and i couldn’t make him better. He sunk to the bottom of the tank on his side and barely moved, and one day he was no longer wiggling. Still very sad about it. He was this beautiful bronze colour.
I was so relieved when he got the last pellet of food
You gave him the will to live, and for some animals, that's what it takes. He felt the care you have for him.
Damn he is ugly but still really good to see him happy

HoveringDude Gamez he was. He was putting off euthanizing him because he really didn’t want to but suddenly he got better. I had to look it up myself, but clove oil and vodka is a humane way to euthanize fish
