Hey guys, I was planning to make this project for over a year now but until yet I didn't have time for it. As you can see this is not the typical kind of video I would upload and it also isn't meant as a restoration. But since maintenance of tools and machines is part of my work and this kind of video was also requested by a couple of viewers I decided to finally make it and I am very happy with the results. Not disassembling all parts completely was totally on purpose because it wasn't necessary for what I wanted to accomplish. If you have ideas for upgrades on the lathe or other projects please let me know! Actually I was done with the project before she uploaded her video, I just wasn’t done with the editing 😄 But yeah I saw the video and she did a great job! 😄
Well done on the lathe maintenance upgrades. I noticed that while you were making threads in the holes you drilled, you were a little crooked on most of the holes. :)
Thank you! I know it looks like I was a little crooked while making the threads, but I think thats more because of the camera angle because I was very cautious to cut them straight. But after all luckily everything works fine 😄 Thanks for your comment!
I do hope that the excess swarfe on all the parts was added for YT effect. As I was told as an apprentice 50 years ago "If you can't keep your tools in a better condition than that sonny then you need to consider another profession". Unless you don't use ferrous materials then PLEASE DON"T use magnets as they will just cause you issues down the track. Your tool at 24:10 is too low hence the 'tit' on the workpiece which the drilling throws off center.
If you mean the chips in the beginning of the video: no they weren’t added for the YT effect. I just started this project 5 minutes after the last one were I made the two rings and since I wanted to di a maintenance video anyways I didn’t clean the lathe before starting the new video for obvious reasons. I used magnets because I wanted the parts to be easily removable. I want to give it a try and if it may cause any problems I can still change that 🙂
I thought this was well done, with very good production and an excellent tutorial on Chinese mini lathe cleaning, maintenance, and “phase 1” upgrades. See if you can fashion some simple way wipers. Also, please do not attempt to hold metal parts / sheet metal with your hand while drilling - how do I know this ? 🤕
Great video! But magnets... not the greatest choice. They're super handy, but they will attract ferrous metal chips, and slightly magnetize the base it's attached to which also will attract chips. Better use contact glue or superglue if conventional methods are not applicable.
