Dude this was the best controller review I've seen in a long time. I'm glad I'm not alone on not being a fan of this dpad. Not really sure why Hori won't just resurrect the Hori Fighting Commander 3. That's all of us really wants again for a fight pad.
This is exactly the kind of review that all tech-related items reviews should be like - precise, in-depth, supported with visual example and clear explanation, detailed but to the point. Basically all the points of what's needed when you try to make an informed decision. Congratulations and thank you :)
Nah, man. Get a Dualsense. Then go to Battle Beaver and pick up some D-pad buttons and a sensor pad. They're relatively cheap and easy to install. This turns the D-pad into the older PS D-pad where every direction is separate instead of attached to a larger disc. And their sensor pad is a bit stiffer which is much better. You will have to relearn some inputs if you're used to the standard Dualsense d-pad. But I promise if you stick w/ it, you'll never go back. I can't play on any other d-pad now.
@@Freshman_FGC I bought one and I tried to update it and it stopped working so I returned it. It felt really promising too. That diamond D pad was interesting
Apparently, the problem with diagonal of the D-pad on this model is manufacturing issue that HORI recognizes. You can get it fixed if you contact HORI's customer support and send it in for repair.
@@steamconnected6671 Don’t ask me why… I found this out and send my in to get it fix as well. I guess they found out when people were writing a bad review
@@77oxem Usually you would be right be not in this case. It doesn’t matter how much you tweak sensitivity on the HORI software since many of their early stock has manufacturing defects
The Octa, I'm sorry to say, dropped the ball when and where it counted. The imprecise diagonal inputs are a big turnoff for me. I play sway and slide characters in Tekken (Shaheen and Paul), so I need those diagonals to be effective. I can't count on two hands the number of Snake Step cancel combos I've dropped because my diagonals messed up.
Brother your channel is godsend. First time I have tried getting into fighting games and I am struggling so hard on my PS5 because dualsense is the worst controller ever. Looking for some cheap and decent options to play Tekken 8 on PS5
the lack of a clicky dpad really makes me wish razer would just make a raion 2 or something, but alas, leverless is where the money is these days thanks for the review!
No. The D-pad is in the wrong spot. That controllers great for shooters though. I use a Dualsense w/ Battle Beaver's D-Buttons installed. Cheap, easy to install and better than anything else I've used. And I've tried just about everything. I even have a Hitbox style controller. I'd still take the Dualsense w/ the D-Button modification.
@@intellectic9155 No. The Dpad is in the perfect spot. Controllers are not for Shooters, keyboard and mouse are. Any play station controller is worse compared to the Clicky Series X controllers
i used the ps3/4 fighting commander for years on SF5 but i got the razer raion when sf6 came out and it makes me appreciate microswitches for the dpad so much. i was interested in this pad until i saw they're using the same dpad from the normal octa which is why i went to the raion. I really wish hori would forget about the little nub you'll barely use and put that money into a really good dpad with switches.
I got a razer raion as well recently. Do you know if there is a way to change the Face Buttons input? I'd want to map triangle and circle to the the R1/R2 face buttons.
So the DPad on mine seems fine. I have this and the PS5 Octa so I will need to mess around with it some more. However since I play Reina I am really trying to nail down electrics and playing with the sensitivity on the Hori software seems to do the trick. HOWEVER, the fact I needed to screw around with software in the first place is very disappointing. While I am okay with messing with stuff it can be a pain to make sure it is correct and works 100% of the time. I guess I could send it into Hori but that's a pain in the ass and I would rather buy a better controller.
I used my Octa for two mins, put it back in the box and sent it back to Amazon the same day, the D pad is a major fail , it has a tiny pivot, diagonals are terrible, so thanks for this review, like yourself i was (perhaps naively) hoping the D-pad would be improved.
The retro bit controller is decent enough, but there are one too many shoulder buttons that essentially lose functionality due to not being able to map them in some sort of software.
I can confirm that octa is terrible for diagonals in Tekken 8. I don't know how Chikurin won Evo Japan with this thing 🙂 I also confirm sharp edges on the dpad.
I have the Octa for PS5 and diagonals work fine for me in Tekken 8. I find the DPad to be better than the DualSense overall. But the problem of the face button coming out 1 frame faster than directionals when pressed simultaneously really is a deal breaker and I'll likely be returning the Octa. I've never had to be conscious of entering the direction on the DPad before the face button and I'm hesitant go through erasing all my muscle memory to reprogram for something that is clearly a hardware issue. Shame. Still looking for the right pad for PS5...
For one button rage arts and heat engagers. Instead of pressing 2+3….. i have this controller and those buttons get hit accidentally and because they are so sensitive it took me awhile to learn not to let my fingers get lazy and rub the other buttons. He also failed to mention that the case seam for the controller is pretty sharp and pronounced… i had to sand that down, and i gently polished the dpad to remove the sharp edges …… but no one should have to do that to a controller they is sold as a “Fighting Controller”. You can tell it was designed by someone that doesn’t play many fighting games. I would use something else if I didn’t already spend the money on this controller
If the face buttons are coming out 1st then for me thats great because im late on my electrics with the dpad and not syncing up the 2. So ya thats a great thing then lol
@MinaKamiXiV no the hell its not it can be used as an regular controllee and any vidoe game now cuz it has a right analog stick just dont use it for fps and its the best all round controllee ever for fighting games, platforms, and adventure games
Standard Dualsense w/ some Battle Beaver D-Buttons installed is the only D-pad to use. Stop spending money on these controllers, people. D-Buttons are, like $15 or something. Also get the senor pad, it's better too. They're easy to install but you will have to relearn some of the inputs. It's so much more precise though.

The D-pad is the most important part. Sucks that the diagonals are vague. 😔 One day one company will create the perfect fight pad for me.
Have u tried the Victrix Pro BFG? That controller has 3 d-pads to choose from (it's modular). So far, I've only used the + d-pad and I love it
