What can I say. Bought this for my brother and his girl and when I played it with them I loved it so much I had to buy it myself. Played it with my other brother and his wife and they loved it so much they had to buy their own copy.
It's a really elegantly designed game that has clearly had a lot of thought put into it, and the various mechanics bounce off each other in such a great way. The fact that it uses animal figures and has a bit of a... whimsical presentation also makes it more approachable than the gritty COIN games (which, don't get me wrong, are fantastic in their own way).
Great story, and yes, Root is very well designed and the overall art style and feel is among the best of any games. And much more approachable than COIN, and i say that as a COIN designer.

Waiting for the Watership Down expansion where I can bulldoze this woodland and build a Mall 🤣🤣🤣🤣 however another great video and I think I need to play this!

Bought this, and every one of it's expansions so I could play it solo. I freaking love it, so many options and so many different gameplay styles thanks to the now 10 factions. Go badgers go!

I play this with my son, just us, two players. It's fun just the original game, but we are also enjoying loading up with some Hirelings and just bought the Marauder Expansion too. Lots of fun for two even though I hear that its better with more players.

Maybe it's because I love them, but it gives me a Twilight Imperium/Fire in the Lake vibe with a wingspan-y kind of flavour. Also, yes, adorably murderous, sold me.

Funnily enough, its true. The game has a solo mode but it's sold separately.
wow great video! I bet it wasnt easy to sums it down to 3 minutes. My top 1 game of 2018 I played 8 or 9 times!! Only one thing you got wrong : this game will never play under 90 minutes at the very best. I saw 2 to 3 hours
We played 2 4 player games in 2 1/2 hours with new players on 2 different occasions while testing this. No game lasted more than 80 mins, including teaching.
3 hours? I'm not sure i'd like the game if it took 3 times longer to play
@@3MBG yeah 3 hours was a 5 player game. Dont play 5 player its not good
@@4657455 Would the game work at 6 player? do the teams need to be even, usually play 4 player games, but may on occasion play 5 or 6.

Yes I like the sound of this game too but again also getting four people together, not likely. But in the past that has not stopped me from buying a game anyways, so...
It can be played at different counts, but i find some of the combos, even the recommended ones, a bit wobbly

@@hollyriver22171 I've never been big on computer n pc gaming. More so now, since old age, arthritis, & carpal tunnel makes it difficult on my hands n elbows (joints are shot- limited range motion) to spend time on a computer or tablet or even using my phone. Doesn't help pushing cardboard around on a board game but it's the lesser levels of "pain and soreness". And if I overdo the icy hot to help, the smell makes my dog run away from me. Lol

I would suggest 'Cuba Libre' over ' A distant plain' as the former has a much cleaner design and is thus not too complex and tough to learn.

Curious comparison to A Distant Plain, (not quite the COIN game I would introduce new players to, but...) Do you consider Root to be a COIN game?
COIN adjacent for sure.
With the different factions playing so differently, is Root at all similar to Spirit Island?
From the description and char boards, they seem similar - but i haven't played Root yet?
Kinda, but no. Root is competitive and a race for victory points, spirit island collaborative and a battle against the invaders. Their main commonality is that each faction/spirit you play is different, but the gameplay loop and what you do is totally different in each game

I really enjoyed Root though, but I am from a wargaming background and enjoy the COIN series as well. So asymmetric games with high conflict are sorta my jam. So take that with a grain of salt
Would you recommend playing this game with two players where two players each control 2 factions ( a la Bloc by Bloc)? I really want to get this game, but I don’t see myself getting 4 people to play it anytime soon
No. I dont think the game would work well at all like that.
There are rules in bgg to play with an extra automated player, and this game is good from three people upwards
And the Nintendo Switch version is finally out.

Hard to say, I only know what you know about it. I've saved it in my KS to watch, and still haven't backed it. But i'm very close. I've enjoyed the 3 Awaken realms games i've played, so pretty tempted.
Still haven't watched all the content and read the rules fully though. So jury out
Yeah, so it turns out the hype train is quite real on this one. I also find it fascinating how much it has in common with the COIN series, while still being very much its own unique thing. Anyone played both Root and COIN and have an opinion on that?

It was when someone in another vid referred to the COIN games as "the grandfather of ROOT" that I knew I had to check this game out.
@@safe-keeper1042 Absolutely. Root is still very different and very much its own thing. But there are definitely strong parallels
I get considerably more plays of this, in various iterations, with a vastly varied cast of players, compared to the core group I can convince to play the fantastic COIN series.

Depends on your definition of cover. Like, i dont just read the whole rulebook from start to finish or anything.
@@3MBG ya you did a good overview of the game and what to expect. I really like playing this game, but I find it hard to explain to new players aside from everyone does their own stuff and you smash heads occasionally

Played this game last week for the first time... I mean... Game set and match... This game is just.. WOW....instantly in my top 5 games of all time..
Slight correction.... Actually two players can win... If you play a dominance card with a vagabond you can win alongside your coalition partner..
True. With my time code, I tend to not mention edge cases and exceptions in rules a fair bit, as it's a high level over view, not a how to play. But you are absolutely correct.

It was a tough one. A lot of little bits ended up on the cutting room floor, simply due to the fact that even the phases are different for each player.
It is a bloody hell to teach and play this and for nothing.. it is not fun
