Sorry to say, Ightham Mote is a moated, fortified Manor House. Even with the moat and a Gatehouse, it was never a castle. The main entrance archway, dates back to C.1500. An original building lies beneath this present structure and that was also a Manor House. Like Oxburgh Hall in Norfolk, these buildings were lightly fortified and could not with stand a siege. Ightham Mote is beautifully looked after by National Trust. Well worth a visit.

An incredible place - obviously a well loved home for centuries, it seems so sad now. But unlike so many old homes, you can see that real people lived here. Thank you for your video, I really enjoyed it !

A little more of its history would have been appreciated.

Definitely not, nor has it ever been, a castle. The church at Igtham is equally lovely and worth a visit.
