      I love P’s especially when they’re set up well and have the finish off the neck-this beast is a killer.
      I’m leaning heavily on a pair of modded MM’s,wired passive with series/parallel switches and TBX passive tone controls- one is a Sabre with one pickup tuned ADGC,the other is a Stingray with a D tuner for my standard tuning needs.

    Greg, please reveal your process for stripping the back of neck finish. Thank you brother. That P sounds fkn killer. Totally Steve Harris!

    • @gregcoates4281
      @gregcoates4281 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sharpened scrapers are my favorite method
      You don’t wanna breathe that stuff while sanding it so the scraping method works cleaner and faster. I finish it up with 3M Scotch Brite in red/green/white grits
      Then I use either Tung oil or Danish oil to seal and finish it,burnish it with a drum stick!

    • @luvbasses5487
      @luvbasses5487 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some of my custom shop basses have thick lacquer finish on back of their necks and they definitely gum up during a warm night or under a blazing hot lighting rig. So, scrapers that a painting crew would use to strip paint?

    • @gregcoates4281
      @gregcoates4281 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@luvbasses5487 basically thin gauge sheet metal that can be “barbed” with an edge-doesn’t have to be a tool necessarily-just a sharpened/barbed piece of somewhat flexible sheet metal-that way it can conform to the curvature of the neck.

    • @luvbasses5487
      @luvbasses5487 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @gregcoates4281
      @gregcoates4281 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@luvbasses5487 of course,man! Thank you-and just start out slow with long strokes towards the headstock when stripping those finishes off-if the edge is sharp enough,the finish should come off in ribbon-like pieces-just make sure to back off when you feel wood.

    Greg Coates: what is your live rig??

    • @gregcoates4281
      @gregcoates4281 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on the gig,but currently my favorites are a 1978 MM Sabre that’s wired passive with a Duncan Stingray pickup tuned ADGC,a 1988 MMStingray wired passive w/Hipshot D tuner and a Sayoko Kuwabara rewound MM Stingray pickup-both MM’s wired with series/parallel switches/TBX tone controls,ABM bridges,D’Addario ProSteels through an all analog pedalboard with a Dunlop volume pedal through a Visual Sound Comp66/Ibanez Tube King/Malekko B:ASSMASTER (Germanium) octave fuzz/Dunlop Bass Wah into an MXR Octave Plus into a GNI dual analog chorus/ART MP1 tube pre amp out to either a Trace Elliot GP12 SMX 1200 watt stereo bass amp into an assortment of 5”/10”/15” speaker cabs. I also use Ashdown Mark King signature ASHDOWN LABS analog bass heads,FENDER 300 PS’s and Genz Benz Streamliner class D 900 watt head as well as smaller single 10”/12”/15” Trace Elliot bass combos.
      200 year old German flatback 2/3 size upright bass with a Wilson bass pickup into the same effects I use for my electric set up. I also have assorted Fender Precision and Jazz basses,a Spector wired passive,MM Stingray5’s,Yamaha BB series,a BC RICO Eagle bass and a Danelectro long scale DC bass as well as some custom instruments.
      All of these are highly customized and feature series/parallel circuits. I use D’Addario Pro Steels/NYXL’s/Chromes primarily and Thomastik Orchestral gauge upright strings and flats for my fretless Japanese Fretless Jazz Bass.
