This was the 3rd video I watched for how to adjust a carburetor, and this was by far the easiest and best-explained video I saw. This is how every how-to mechanical video should be. Thank you! Signing the petition!
Much appreciated...
The people in this video are my neighbors nephews
Because it’s over simplified. You should use a vacuum gauge.
My 1978 Monte Carlo with a 350 Chevy crate engine has never run better. It settled right down and idles great. I thought the hot cam was the idle problem but turns out that the needle valves were no where near the same dial in. Great video. Easy to follow language. AND IT WORKED!!!!! Thanks so much for your time to put that on line.
Best video on tuning a Edelbrock I have found. Thank you for making this video simple, fast, efficient, & straight to the point!
you are litterally like the only video that puts it to you straight on how to do it right, have a beer 🍺
Thank you so much for making it simple and quick I've watched numerous videos 15 minutes long and still didn't understand you are the man!
Glad to help..
This is so great! I have always been so intimidated, and this just makes perfect sense. Heading out to my garage now. THANKS CHRIS!
Take the guess work out of adjusting the mixture. The proper way is to connect a vacuum gauge directly to the intake manifold for full engine vacuum. You adjust them like the video but watch the gauge till you get the highest vacuum reading in inches. On a good stock engine that's healthy it should pull around 20 inches of vacuum. The idle will be smooth and steady when you hit the sweet spot. Once you get both mixture screws adjusted for max inches on the gauge you're done.
+Rich B. hey Sir i have a question? is it true that fuel injector save fuel? if so whats the percentage compare to carburetor?
The difference between modern fuel injection and carbs is night and day. Cold engine performance is where FI shines. Carbs are also susceptible to vapor lock in the summer. The bad thing about FI is if it breaks on the the side of the road call a tow truck. A carb can be fixed with basic hand tools.
+Rich B. Well said...
Thank you, I just subscribed based on this video. Very easy to understand...made me jump up, grab the long Snap-on screwdriver (straight, not phillips) and start adjusting. Within 1 minute, I took the idle RPMs down from 780 to around 600, which is normal. It's funny, I rebuilt the carb but forgot to tune the mixture!
That was best and fast. Lesson I've ever heard on carb adj. I'm old n white headed and I know these things also .but just wanted refreash on carb. Thanks you !!!
My left ear learned a lot
Ronanigans 😂😂😂😂 damn true mate.
Mine too 😂
Thank you! That was simple and straightforward!
thanks doc, she's running like a champ now!!
The primary two barrel's have the idle circuit for a four barrel carb, you will have two mixture screw's. for a four barrel carb.
finally some one with a simple explanation thank you
exactly, thank you!
Right, those other fucks want you to buy extra shit to do a simple task...
It means that the circuit for that side is clogged. Call the carb maker and they can give you some insight on how to clear the passages.
this exactly how all car videos should be
Edelbrock manual says then run screws in to lean mixture by 20 rpm. They call it "Lean-Best Idle Set".
thank you very much on the tip just bought my four barrel Edelbrock 600 for my 350 great performer runs great as I'm going down the road but like to load up will adjust and see what happens thank you
Thanks,
Just doing a tune up on my 65 289 Ford and forgot how to do the adjustment. I tossed my last Holly in the trash and love my Edelbrock.
In my experience, if a carbureteted engine is hard to start, the 1st thing most people mess with is the carb. Most of the time the problem is dry rotted soft fuel lines. Just my 2 cents.
Good advice.. Thanks..
Way easier than dealing with vacuum gauges and such. In till it dies out till it dies meet in the middle. repeat the other side and be done with it.
Normally there is one screw per barrel. A single barrel carburetor has one mixture screw.
I want to thank you because this was very informational and right to the point.
i will add that its best to make the adjustments timely because if u let the car idle too long the intake tracts heat up and will give you fits because it never seems to stabilize. i try to shoot for Lean Best Idle instead of Rich Best Idle..
Very good explanation it was exactly what i was needing to know. What about video on a carb calibrator pins and springs kit?
Something has clogged the idle mixture circuit passages. Edelbrock may have a fix. If not a new carburetor will be the fix.
Simple and clear explanation! You are the MAN!
I'm surprised that those mixtures screws aren't out 1/2 turn from their high idle speeds. That extra 1/2 turn out provides a slight " cushion " against having idle problems. If they are left in an almost too lean position the slightest bit of contamination in the idle circuit will cause a rough idle. This procedure has been done for many decades and makes it possible to go longer between adjustments. If trade schools aren't teaching this 1/2 turn method they should give the students their money back. Of course the EPA wants the screws slightly in from fast Idle on each screw but that's another "world" there.
What I need to know, though there are presets from the factory, and I may have mine a little out of adjustment, is when fully screwed in how many turns out should they be for initial use? I have seen each screw does each side.
Some carbs have just one mixture screw right? I'm new to all this teaching myself right now any advice is appreciated.
Hello, thanks for posting this. How about for a car that's running too rich or too lean? 4 barrel Holly Carb on a 1965 mustang 289. Thank you.
Informative and straight to the point. Thank you sir
I have been searching for a video like this! Thank you for making this so simple
Thank you for the vote of confidence!
great, informative video. ive got some questions though. what makes the gmc small block engine off if i engage gears? what can i do about it? by the way the carb type is the one with a two eletric gas sprayer on top. appreciate great help. im a filipino mechanic here in middle east.
if not adjust right will it cause your car to cut off
On 4 barrel carb I adjusted it from running too rich . went to put gas in to now it idle funny and turns off in me
Easy peasy and straight forward.
Use the same procedure
Hi *****, I have a 1973 Jeep CJ5 with a Straight 6 (258) and an Edelbrock 4-barrel 1405 (600 CFM) carburetor. Is this too much carb for me? I have gotten advice from experienced Jeepers that the carb is the reason my Jeep is shutting off after about 4 seconds of running...ANY INFO HELPS! THANKS SO MUCH!
I am from the Philippines I can't believe carbureture Vans, Cars, Suv are still high number. probably made from 15 year old cars, vans, suvs are most likely carburetor power. By the way guys I have a question i read lots of comments saying Fuel Injector save fuel, if so how much save of fuel are we talking compare to carburetor? please reply
+GAR A Compared to the expense to convert from carburetor to fuel injection..it not much more.
+Chris “The Doc” Ingrassia ok thank you for the reply :) mmm I never hear bout that
I have pulled the screws all the way out, how should I go about setting them back in?
I have a 91 GMC truck 350 engine v8 5.7 L it appears that it is not spraying on one side of a carburetor should I run a fuel cleaner through the gas tank, or use carburetor cleaner to spray over the top? any advice would help me thank you
But what about the idle screw on the right side of the carb? (Not the 2 on front)
why when i turn the idle mixture screws in the motor will idle down ? worked yesterday i only removed carb to fix vaccume leak at the basedid not take apart carb./off then back on. 1406 edelbrock 6 months old
Simple down to earth procedure 🤙🏾
That was a very nice and informative video, but I wish the volume was louder. I could barely hear what was being said. Thanks, though. :)
Captions bro....hit them up in the setting tab...cheers!
Thanks for posting. Good info for this diesel guy lol.
What if the car is putting out too much fumes. I bought the carb and manifold as a pair used. Does that sound like a jet replacement?
You may have it "Over" carburated
i have a boat 4 cinlender 3.0 Mercury cruiser I have a 2 barrel carburetor how do I adjust my carburetor my motor is shaking my RPMs was high now they are down I need to know what do my RPM supposed to be set on also how to adjust my carburetor
what would be a good starting point(turns out) for the idle screws
Run the screws in & then back them out three full turns each. Start the engine & work from there.
@@MustangRestorationsInc ok I just needed a base setting no body actually tells you where to start from thanks
i have a 1980 corvette with this same carb is there suppose to be a spring on the choke opposite side of the throttle cable? seems couple holes there and as of late hard to keep idle thanks for your time
Hi Chuck.. No there is not a spring on the side of the carburetor.
The round black choke housing has a temperature sensitive spring of sorts in side of it the may be at fault.
Give Edelbrock a call & they should be able to set you up with that part if needed.
By the way, the petition website gave me a "dangerous link" error. Might want to look into that.
Hi I got Toyota Avensis 2005 model. car is producing a knocking noise when its idle and it disappear when press the gas pedal. Where I can find the screw to adjust according in Toyota avensis 2005 model? thanks
What if you adjust one (the right one for me) and it as no effect what so ever on idle? The one on the left is the only one that changes the idle etc.
do you have any advice, I seem to have the same issue. I watched your video and went out and tried it, no effect. Edelbrock 2 brl carb. only the left screw changed the idle, and just by a little.
It's almost a stock 302 with an air gap manifold and 1405 carb. Is that too much for the engine? Thank you.
Yes, you have a 500 cfm carb.
It will work but carbs. that are too big will not give extra power and at some point cause some run ability issues. I have several 350 Chev. engines with two Edelbrock four barrel carbs. which are nearly three times the carburation needed but work just fine except at low RPM's where the engine will hesitate if the throttle is floored. The extra carb. doesn't make a quicker 1/4 mile time but looks good.
1405 is 600 cfm
What if engine wont start stalling? I ran in both screws and it wont stall
Ill try my toyota 2r..thanks for vids
hi umm im new to this and does that mean that a 4 barrel has 4 mixture screws? i only see two up front
While trying to start my mustang (after having driven it throughout the day) I notice that my mustang has a difficult time starting (I think the carb is flooding). Also, I notice that the car has a fast idle. Could the two problems be related? Would adjusting the gas/idle screws fix the problem?
yes
Why not explain the fast idle screw on the left by the choke and then there's another screw the curb idle screw I guess?
Because the fast idle screw on the Edelbrock carburetor in the video is on the drivers side. Holley carburetors have it on the choke side..
@@MustangRestorationsInc irrespective of the position, do you have any videos explaining the function of the fast idle screw?
@@dreamingcode No I'm sorry I don't.. This video was more to explain the idle mixture process & not an explanation of the entire carburetor..
If you go directly to the Edelbrock website they have a few video's that may help though.
WOW the expert didnt even talk about idle rpm. on the AFB carb i have found it helps to set the idle rpm as low as it will run then after setting the mix screws. they seam to be more sensitive. then set the rpm at the idle driving rpm and reset the the mix screws.
Thanks Moe your absolutely correct. Great advice.. Thank you..
Thanks Doc, you were right. Damn Microsoft.
how to adjust carburator to less consume gasoline
what is a good fuel pressure for a edelbrock 750? it's on a sbc 355 stock stock setup with mild cam
4 to 7 psi . Its is always good to run a fuel regulator too.
Chris Ingrassia
OK thanks, I have a bypass regulator connected
I have seen many videos about idle mixture screw settings, but non of the videos talk about the relationship of setting the idle screw in association with the idle mixture screws. My understanding is that once the throttle plates are opened the idle mixture screws no longer work, so to me that says that the more you have the idle screw turned in the less the idle mixture screws will function properly. My question is How do you properly set the idle screw for the primary throttle plates before you set the idle mixture screws? Also there is a huge RPM drop in my engine when I place the auto trans in gear, about 300-400 RPM. Is this normal or is there a way to adjust it so there is not such a huge drop in RPM? I do understand there will be some drop in RPM when going into gear, is there a way to minimize the RPM drop?
The idle mixture circuit kicks in at about 1250 rpm. So you have plenty of leeway. Start by putting the idle at about 850 rpm. Make your idle mixture circuit adjustments and then lower the idle screw if the idle climbs. Repeat the process until the idle works for you. Your transmissions torque converter is locking up too early. You need to get a "higher stall" converter to help eliminate the harsh transition into gear you are experiencing .
Short ,and to the point ,cheers !
I have a 75 F150 with a 390 and a 600 edelbrock carb. only the right adjustment screw does anything. could the needle be clogged or something on the left one making it not work?
The circuit or passageway is clogged that controls that side of the carburetor. You can try removing the screw with the engine off and blowing some air thru the hole. This may clear the circuit. Good luck!
Just sayin? Thank's I apreiciate your opinion. Afterall the good stuff you have posted.
So if i am screwing my mixure screw in (clockwise) am i restricting the air or gas flow?. And does this mixure screw only do its job when idleing, or does it affect how the engine runs on the highway as well? I have a 200ci with a 1 bbl holly. Thanks for the help
The air comes thru the big opening at the top of the carburator, turning the screws clockwise shuts the gas flow at idle. No, it wont do much for highway driving.
How could I tell if my carb is single or dual?
Check with another computer, I have three computers here and they all have sound from this video. Doc
I hear the audio just fine. Thank You.
so I have this carb on my 69 fastback, car starts and idles great but it's recently developed this issue where it's as if the car has hiccups.. when I'm cruising every now an again when I give it a little gas it misses.. it's pretty random. also when I corner hard it sounds like it wants to stall.. I'm thinking it's a fuel delivery issue.. any ideas? Thanks in advance Sir.
GunfightersINC It sounds like it could be the distributor points and condenser just replace them
What happens if the engine does not respond to the fuel mixture screws at all?
The idle circuits are clogged & will require a new carburetor
Thank u for a straightforward video!
this audio only works on the left side of my headset. 😎
Thank you! Just what I needed.
I have a 1957 Chevy with A283 motor edeibrock 600 when trying to start it Floods out all the time. Don't know why
I would call Edelbrock & tell them what your experiencing.
cool i have one im gonna do it this made easy to understand
Our carburetor is running extremely rich. We attempted to adjust the idle mixture screws. after turning the screws all the way in clockwise till closed, the engine keeps running! The exhaust has black smoke. We adjusted the float levels and replaced needles.. still no change. Any ideas?
+65musthavechrome..... You got a bad carburetor
+Chris “The Doc” Ingrassia , what's the fix? what is the problem exactly?
+65musthavechrome Something inside the carburetor is letting in too much gas or its too big for the engine. A 289 Mustang that has a stock camshaft should run a 500CFM carburetor.
What could be wrong with my carb. It idles fine but when I take off it starts to stall. I step on the gas to make it stop stalling. Could it be the air mixture.
No. Accelerator pump in carb. or late timing caused by leaky vacuum advance on distributor or missing hot air hose from exhaust manifold shroud to air cleaner. Occasionally timing has to be slightly advanced from factory suggested setting. Have worked on cars 44 years. Good luck.
Rebuilt the carb. New manifold and distributor. Everything works fine now thanks anyway.
Will poor adjustment effect starting quality?
Yes & no...The idle circuit is only used once the engine is started & you have taken you hand off the key. But if its not adjusted correctly, then the engine will stall out once you stop trying to start the engine.
Thank you friend. I'm pretty sure you've enabled me to solve my issue.
So uh... How do you diagnose 4 barrel engagement issues? My F-85 has the most sluggish carb ever (4 barrel not engaging).
Are you using an Edelbrock carburetor?
Yes, It's a 4 BBL Edelbrock. It's damn near identical to the one in the video!
Whats the issue?
It just doesn't kick in. It runs on the primaries only, essentially, it's the same carb as the original 2BBL. at this point. I've checked hoses, they're good. I've checked the throttle cable. It's good. I've checked the carburetor itself. Nothing is visually wrong with it. Say, would the kickdown have anything to do with it not engaging? It doesn't go into passing gear, ever. The fuse for, I'm assuming, anyways, the kickdown switch keeps blowing out, so do you think I just need a new kickdown switch?
Ok... Dis-connect the battery, Then with the engine off disconnect the linkage on the drivers side of the carburetor & manually work the throttle to its furthest extend. Now reattach the linkage & put your foot to the floor to determine if the throttle is still opening fully..The secondary plates are mechanical. Meaning they are linked to the primary's with a rod. This rod is on the passenger side of the carburetor, its disabled when the choke blade is closed & the choke must be completely open to allow the secondary plates to open. With the engine off. Manually work the throttle while looking at the passengers side of the carburetor to determine if this is happening.. If so,, fix the choke to open..Another reason could be the base gasket is somehow blocking the secondary's from opening. That's what I would look at first.
Will adjusting the idle fuel mixture screws effect backfire or popping through the exhaust , It does it on warm up at high idle and if Iam cruising with little pressure on the throttle
Thank you
what should i do if it don't change by adjusting the screws?
Hi Matt. There is a blockage...Without the car running..You can try removing the idle mixture screws & using an air hose. Blow air into the holes the screws came out of while opening and closing the accelerator. This may clear the passage's of what ever is stuck in there. Reinstall the screws & try making an adjustment.
@@MustangRestorationsInc i did what you said to do no change tho what should i do ?
@@mrMATTHEWmay887 Your gonna need a new carb. Give Edelbrock a call...
Man you are an awesome dude, thank you for the tip....made my day.
Thanks. I've had to remove the screws and blow air through to unblock the passages (I've had idle issues and blowing it out temporarily fixed the problem). The problem is I've had to do this 3 times this month. I was going to replace the fuel filter, but could it be something else? A friend has mentioned I should drain the tank because he suspects bad gas. Apparently, he said the gas can crystalize and get gunky. Anyone have any advice to share?
had sub just because you got right to it
Thank you, this video was very helpful
Thank you ! I’ll give a try !
Thanks Man , greatly helpful video
If been having a problem with the carb on a jeep I bought so I bought a new carb and it won't rev over 3 grand and when you try to it backfires through the intake and exhaust and it just dies with no power can you help pls
+Brandon Parmelee What year & engine is the truck?
+Chris “The Doc” Ingrassia its a 89 Jeep Wrangler yj with the 4.2 amc engine with a 2 barrel carter carb
+Brandon Parmelee I would look for a vacuum leak or crossed spark plug wire. Unless ypu have a bad new carburetor.... There must be something hooked up incorrectly.
+Chris “The Doc” Ingrassia thanks I was thinking the same thing I have to look at it tomorrow and see what's going on with it I really appreciate your help
I really can't tell by ear I'm try to set a Quadra jet
question any1 here have a double quad carb?
how much they cost?
I have a 350 vortec with a 1406 eldebrock has no electric choke. Car idles fine but when you stab the throttle while driving it loads up or something and goes dead. I can let it sit for a second then start it up and drive normal. It has a Mr gasket fuel pressure regulator on it set on 3 and a glass fuel filter that always seems showing half full of gas. No kinked hoses and just replaced the throttle pump in carb thinking that was problem but still does it. Anyone have a suggestion?
Hi, The timing may be a somewhat retarded or the metering rod springs may need to be changed. Advance your timing a bit & see if that makes a difference. If not then contact Edelbrock for a spring kit & further specific advice.
@@MustangRestorationsInc ok I'll try that. Never considered the timing that makes since. Ty sir for the advice. And ty for your videos.
Thank you I'll check it out.
Thanks alot dr.
