The point is really just that there are no real heroes in war.
There are just less evil things that we have to do.
To the men and women who come back they don't think they are heroes.

The most important thing about this song and video is that first 2 verses he praises the American flag the one he trusts and loves, then after 3 verse its the White flag of peace that he brought home.
PS. Americans killed about 6 civilians for one enemy soldier, and Vietnam war was forced on agenda to stop communism. So A LOT of innocent people died for American greed, that`s what it means to "Serve your country".

This song doesn't demean soldiers, or their actions. It cries out for sympathy for soldiers, since most feel ashamed of their actions, weather necessary or not

Much like a good movie, this song is 3 acts if you will.
Act I: A naive man goes to bootcamp, works hard, sweats alongside other soldiers, forms strong bonds and genuinely believes he's doing good and will return a hero.
Act II: Reality sets in that war is messy, war is nasty and terrible things are done by and to both sides. He holds on to it being his duty to keep from spiraling.
Act III: He breaks, realizes that war is terrible for everyone and that there are no heroes and the idea he may be viewed as such disgusts him. Now believes in peace but knows it won't come.
It's heartbreaking to imagine someone going through that journey. You want to do good, because your 'brothers' are doing something wrong you join in, letting go of most of your morality until you have to do something so far across any boundaries, something you can't rationalize, that you despise the people that appreciate what you've done, while you initially actually wanted their appreciation. The mind goes through a LOT.

I'm an oif 5 veteran. Bco 1st platoon 2-23 inf, my unit literally was the surge of 2007. Whenever I get asked "what it was like over there" I refer to this song because it's true. While we didn't piss on anyone, we treated the prisoners like shit. At the time it was justified, but for every "terrorist" we kill, or maim we create 20 more. The aid we supposedly gave to the Iraqi citizens, never happened except for in the green zone. I can't tell you how many baby bottles I filled with my own water, and gave their mother's my only issued mre. They were out of power, water, food. We all stopped caring about our country and our government, and only cared about each other and making sure we all get out of those shit holes and back to our families.
When I got out I burned everything, my acus, gear, everything except my class a's because my son asked for them. This isn't an anti soldier song its an anti war song about the naivety we all have because of war movies. When in reality one minute you could be talking to your best friend about your kids marrying each other, and the next your elbow deep in his thigh looking for his femoral artery that a 50cal round caused, because it went through a house and his leg, that snapped into his gut to keep him alive, even though he died 14 minutes ago.
And then go back and be bored for 3 days because your on rest cycle. Then when you find a detainee whether it's the person your looking for or not, they become the killer of your friend. When that detainee asks for water you dump the entire bottle down their throats until it's empty and ask if they are still thirsty. Then you go months without action and everyone goes stir crazy and trigger fingers get itchy, and you learn who the sociopaths are in your group.
You come to realise you're in a war for no reason and you've been lied to, and your enemies are doing the same thing you would if say China invaded. Then you come home and you hear the ignorance and delusions of grandeur. You go to you're reintegration back into civilized society clssses. Civilians see everything in 270 black and white, and you see everything in 10kuhd full color. And then you forget what it's like to be them, and you'll never get back to it, no matter how hard you try.
So you just pretend and say your thank yous, and nobody is the wiser. I don't have ptsd, I'm just being as honest as I can and clear, but I see why those that have it, do. Thank your husband for me.

I'm gonna be honest being of Somali heritage, knowing the brutalities my parents witnessed have made me detest war. It robbed them of having a safe place to raise me and my siblings. They lost friends and family members to both U.S soliders and other Somalis. I'm not interested in pointing fingers at who to blame anymore, but I'm sure we can all agree that it leaves all parties involved scarred, and takes away people's loved ones. This song is seen from a soliders perspective.

You are not alone in being disgusted by war and the atrocities committed on both sides of whatever conflict the u.s. decides to put themselves in . I think the message is to point out this lie American kids are told , where they are promised the world but are sent across the word to kill and protect American assets.

The song isn't meant to demonize soldiers in war. Its meant to describe how horrible war is, how it requires horrid actions, and how soldiers don't feel like heroes when they come home.
I have multiple family members who served in the military (some actively serving today), one of which was my older brother. I'll always when I was 16 - and my older brother had finally returned home after tours to Iraq and Afghanistan - I answered him calling our house, and told me he was at a bridge and was going to jump (going to cut the tension here and say he didn't). He couldn't handle the horrible things he had to do, and he confessed them to me... he had to get the guilt off his chest. That experience really put things into perspective for me - soldiers do what they have to do just to protect and come home to their loved ones. I will never fault someone in the service for that.
It doesn't matter what your husband is doing when he's on tour. He's fighting to protect you, me, and everyone in the US... he's doing what he has to do so he can come home to you. I thank him for his service, and offer my gratitude to you for being his light at the end of tunnel... his motivation to serve.
Also to answer your question about the song... the song was written based on multiple letters the singer received from veterans. The events are based on what was written in the letters.

And to add, these lyrics were based on soldiers letters, so at least someone has done the things from verse 2. I mean, we did hear about Abu Graibh (or however that's written) where people are taking smiling selfies with torture victims and naked human pyramids. Most soldiers if not all went in with good intent and some got bended in their morality by what they experienced, war is such an inhuman experience that it can lead you to do inhuman things. It's a minority that did things like that, but some have, some good people have done terrible things. War can do that to the mind. That's why it's so nasty, everybody suffers.

I believe this song was written from stories told to the artist by veterans undergoing therapy for PTSD. A way to share their pain anonymously and maybe make people understand the reason combat changes people. All military personnel are not pathological killers even if they must adopt that mindset to survive. They’re human with emotions and conscious thoughts. I hope this song brings peace to souls tormented by what they’ve seen and done.

I played this song for my kids, maybe around 13 years old while on a road trip. With the wife, we were all crying at the end. But I gave the same situation, a suicide bomber. People have to be kept at a distance until the risk is ascertained. If she had been weaponized and he didn't fire, his friends could have died. I appreciate all the servicemen that keep me from having to make that decision. They really do protect my way of life, but don't get to live it themselves. How noble is that? (Not a question.)

    • @Leo-nf5qc
      @Leo-nf5qc 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Answer: Not very noble at all. The us isn't saving anyone with its wars all they do is to invade countries to either gain resources or to gain propaganda about "saving the world from terrorism" while the us is the actual terrorists.

We shouldn't be in these places all over the world in the first place. This is not a song denegrating the soldiers, but those in power who send them into harms way, do nothing to help them when they get back. It is what the singer was told from a soldier he met. The things they have to bear witness to I really can't imagine. I love the soldiers, not the elitist politicians who don't give a damn about them when they come home, sometimes broken from what they've seen or had to do.

To me the white flag also symbolized innocence. The children and many others are oftentimes manipulated and brainwashed into this situations. The desperate conditions and quality of living in the countries the fightings often take place don't help either.
Truly one of the saddest song I've heard. What got to me is the line 'Is that what they see?', many times even the closest people could not understand the soldiers psyche after they come back and relegate their experience to 'what was necessary' with them being the definite good, when in reality there is no such thing. Even when interrogating potential terrorists or enemies Rise against shown what can be considered as wrong. The end of the clip also shown what sad reality can await the ones who don't get enough strong emotional, mental, medical and social support. The soldier lashed out and was shot by the police who saw him as a mad individual.
