Alcatraz is far more than a 22-acre island in San Francisco Bay, far more than the location of a former federal prison, and far more than a cursory tourist destination. Fifty years ago, it became a site of Native American activism that forever changed government policy and asserted the organizing power of a united Indigenous people.

Don't ever recall being taught this in my history classes. Unbelievable how the United States government treated Native Americans and continue to do so!
when i went to alcatraz i was so suprised to see all of the native american things there
Thankfully I’m watching this because of my history class!
It’s crazy 3 years later this video is being shown in my history class :)
I'm from Australia and you never hear about this when reading and watching the history of Alcatraz, I have even visited and it was not mentioned at all from what I can remember.
Just visited last week, they have a whole exhibit on the island now about it and the following movements that ensued
The Means family is absolutely iconic in the Native American community and .
Thank you for sharing this!
The beat yo' That hip hop starting beat... So dope❤
“Indians of all tribes!” I love that name. 👏🏽💖
Russell Means is an icon
Where are Russell and Dennis? I thought they had a huge roll in leadership and made many interviews.
Because of this occupation, programs that were created on the island were incorporated into the Bay Area communities. Intertribal Friendship house community center in Oakland Ca.
The native american health centers in Oakland and SF, and hintil cu ca the 1st and only American Indian child development center in Oakland Ca. All of these programs started on the island and still exist today

What were those internal divisions they mentioned?
Yeah i was thinking about that too. Do you already know the reason???
There was division of the island between parties. After Oakes Daughter died which was very sad his family left the Island. Non natives were joining the island who were hippies and did drugs and no leadership could occur because of that situation.
Great content though the music distracts and intrudes in odd moments.
Thanks for watching! We appreciate the feedback.
Wow I’ve lived half my life in sf and learning about it, not knowing this part of its history, which gives even more reason to say: Land Back! Land Back!
Heard about this when it was mentioned in the book Assata Shakur Autobiography. Had to check it out, it’s amazing the Solidarity ✊🏽

I find it ironic that hundreds of Indian voluntarily lived on an islands that used to be a prison. Maybe the US government was actually ok with that. Just saying, do you not see the irony of this?
I think they saw the irony of it, that was the point
Recaptured? They squatted till they got ran off with guns. Somethings never change but that is an untrue statement that they re-captured anything
The pilgrims were the first squatters, how can you squat on your own land?
White colonizers can go back to Europe
