  • IndyCar allows its teams to use extra turbocharger boost to increase qualifying speeds at Indianapolis 500, but how is that bump in horsepower made? Honda Performance Development shows RACER's Marshall Pruett how it's done.

    Hey Marshall I remember the days when Indy Car would distribute Turbo Pop Off Valves to each team every day of an event. I'm guessing to keep some parody between all the teams back in the day. I saw these devices handed out (Indy Car officals) each morning when going to the Indy Car races at Laguna Seca.

      Yes, I remember "Turbogate". Some thought the rules application was a "parody" of fairness.

    The thing about these 2.2L's being in the cars for 11 years so far and continuing into the future, well, you think about the offenhauser, how many decades were those in cars? But was it really the same engine all those years? Like if you took one from 1950 and 1975 they're hardly the same. Improvements these days in engines are less obvious across the board of production engines but still happen, and I bet a 2012-vintage 2200cc V6T Honda Indy engine has a bunch of changes from one on track today. But, those changes- they're like different CNC techniques or a CFD-informed change to the intake manifold or whatever secret squirrel stuff they don't discuss.

    You know...I miss the attrition rates that used to make the Indy 500 even more interesting to watch...
    Wouldn't it be awesome if at least for the 500, they go full boost the whole month? Then let the teams decide how much of it to use for the month? Would bring back a little more uncertainty and strategy for the race and make things a bit more interesting.

      I wish, the cars look so easy in race trim but so edgy on qualifying. It’s too easy in race running imo

      @@marktucker208 Well, quali is 10 miles and the "Race" is 500. So if you want to see the checkered next Sunday you wouldn't want to screw the boost up into the 1400 Mili Bar range (even IF it was allowed by tech rules.) As many a great driver has said; "To finish first, first you must finish!" But I'm sure you already knew that.

    Great information. Marshall, I'd love to see more of this technical stuff like this (kinda like Jon Beekhius used to do). Probably no other broadcaster/journalist around with more tech knowledge than you! Thanks!

    Uncle Bobby helped usher in the turbo manipulation modern era ... he told fantastic stories of '68.
    Plus absolutely monster power ... 1100hp, turning up the wick for Dan Gurney.
    That period w/Gurney ... they essentially outran 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙚, 𝙖𝙡𝙡 the time.

      On a sweeping Western vacation, we stopped by Ontario, watched cars practice.
      Knowing the sight lines at Indy, and seeing the same perspectives at Ontario was wild.
      Fascinating, barren.

  • @timford3599

    It's truly amazing how much different technology is today to get the most performance out of the engine as compared to the 1950's thru 1960's and into the 1970's. Back then it was a matter of how much you wanted to "Tip the Can" (of Nitro) without sending connecting rods out through the block thereby "Ventilating" your 270 Offy or even your "Cammer" Ford. Guys like Jack McGrath and George Bignotti were part mechanic and part Alchemist.

  • @jeffmotsinger8203
    @jeffmotsinger8203 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So, no pop-off valve? A 'waste-gate' is mentioned so I take it there is still a mechanical limit. Is O'Ward's "plenum event" in St. Pete related?

    • @danielhenderson8316
      @danielhenderson8316 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No pop off valves. Honda and Chevy use the same ECU and that prevents overpressure. O'Ward's engine just let go.

    These small 2.2 bi-turbo are beautiful mechanics. But I remember well the Porsche 956 (2.6 bi-turbo) and the Bosch Motronic 1.2 injection system, it was much simpler; pilot has just to turn the boost pressure knob from the cockpit, to unleash the power of the flat 6 during qualifying (from 1.1 to 1.3 bar).

    • @chrisc6935
      @chrisc6935 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Patrick is assuming anyone watching his video understands how a turbocharger works. They have electronically controlled waste gates. A change to the ECU to allow a higher boost pressure means a corresponding change to when the waste gate opens.
