  • Team Penske has an incredibly organized process for managing bodywork changes and the holes that are left uncovered when a piece is removed, as RACER's Marshall Pruett shares from the Indianapolis 500.

    Last year, we walked up and down pit lane before the start of The 500, and noticed who had stickers over the aeroscreen screws. It was actually quite inconsistent to who had them and who didn't!

    A correctly shaped decal with the correct thickness could be used as a vortex generator as well......

      As long as it passes tech. There's go/no-go gauges for every single piece of bodywork on the cars, and if you go outside the allowed tolerances (which are pretty tight) you get DQ'd

    They used to tape the seams where the different body panels come together. Is that still done?

      Yes, (3M Heli-tape is the exact type of “tape”) BUT only in preparation for Qualifying, Carb Day & Race Day.
      Depending on Engineering & budget, maybe once or twice during practice if they are gonna do any qualification simulations.

    As a pilot, who deals with aerodynamics on a daily level those little stickers to cover those little holes is Minimal at best. Its NOT going to make a Big difference... if even at all. In fact, those little holes left open might even help. Look at a golf ball. Those little stickers are more cosmetic than anything. That is why you see some teams do it and others don't bother. Its a decoy. Its a distraction. Makes you the competitive observer say "oh so that is how they do it" or to the sponsor "look how pretty our car looks" When in reality its something else called Power. and I don't mean Willy. Its power. HP power. Power is everything.

    some aerodynamacist said a sticker is a cliff to an air molecule. So imagine what a hole is. If it was Hesketh Racing, it probably would be my little pony stickers.

    Why is there a "dent" in the front nose? Wouldn't it be better aerodynamically to have that smooth and round?

    • @VWLifeVW
      @VWLifeVW ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For the nose camera. Scotty Mac's Pennzoil Special didn't have one installed in that shot though. All the Dallara DW12 noses have those indents. Keep it the same for everybody!

    sigh ..... imsa gets new manufactures , new chassis , new engine platform , indycar gets stickers and flaps......

    I wonder how many man-hours are wasted making matching stickers for every car, every race when they could just use clear stickers.

  • @DJDouglasWarden
    @DJDouglasWarden ปีที่แล้ว

    I guess the midpack teams just use clear stickers that's why they're not as successful
