No phones, people happy and talking with one another. Miss it so much. Those good old credit card things where they would slide the handle to make a carbon copy.
Wow, brings back a lot of good memories. I was 13 at this time. The world is definitely a totally different place now. I'd like to have a time machine 💯
These videos give me a wistful feeling. I was 14 and most likely delivering my after school paper route as this was being filmed. It was such a great time to be growing up.
I was 12 and my mother was so excited to have got me me on of those dolls. She had adoption papers, a name, everything. She was also blonde haired and blue eyed like my mother, wearing a yellow dress, my mothers favorite color. I can guarantee there was way too much money exchanged to make sure I ended up with a doll my mother wanted. I’m a red head green eyed Barbie and my little pony loving girl who thought it was the ugliest doll I’d ever seen. It lived in the back of my closet. Mom would continuously find that ugly thing and proudly prop it up on my bed.

Malls aren’t the same anymore this is a very crowded scene now people push each other always in a hurry cuss each other out if you don’t move fast enough at least back then you could look at other stores as you walked and could look around a store without being rushed or pushed
I was 16 and a sophomore in 1984, what an amazing time it was. The future looked bright, computers were becoming mainstream in the home, and the movies were awesome. If only we realized back then how special that era was compared to today. It's quite sad, really.

Indeed- the mall experience was fun. I was born in 1985, I remember the late 80s and early 90s it was fun to eat in the malls and go shopping. Its still fun
I married in 1983. At the time, my now ex-husband worked at a local mall. I went to pick him up on Christmas Eve because we only had one car. The paking lot was huge, but I couldn't find parking anywhere. Finally found one lonely spot way out by the road. I had to walk in to get him, because you know, there were no cell phones then. It was a long trudge in and out. Good times. 😂 That mall was just demolished a few months ago.
@jankaufmann4305 Oh lots of reasons. Mainly because he abandoned me and moved back to Arizona to be with his new girlfriend. Something about that just kind of rubbed me the wrong way. 😁
Im literally brought to tears seeing this. I miss this time so so very much. I was young and happy and healthy. My family was all alive and happy. We had hope and Christmas and holidays were magical. The energy in the air at the Malls during Christmas was wonderful. Christmas songs, the crowds, everyone happy. You could just sit and people watch and just take it all in.
Watching this makes me realize how badly we are failing as a society now. Every other person isn’t obese & in a scooter. People dressed nice, even to just do Christmas shopping. You could feel safe out & about, despite the crowds. People just had respect for one another. You don’t see guys with pants half way down their butt or people face down in their phones (talking on speaker phone no less). I miss these times. Seeing this these videos makes me realize just how much I miss these times.
You are 100 percent correct. I get tired of people that always comment that it's just nostalgia and that every decade has its problems. The truth of the matter is that the times we are living in now are unprecedented. It isn't just that we are failing economically, but, as you said, in societal collapse. The obesity you mention has not only been normalized, but glorified. We are living in a time of lies and deceit from our media, and those of us who have woke up to it are painfully aware of just how unaware most of our friends and neighbors are to it. It's sickening to see what we've become as a society, and as a nation.
Nowadays in a mall, if you can find one, everyone looks like what we used to call carnies. My elderly parents visited a mall recently and complained that it was full of riff raff. I told them that that's just what most people seem to be these days. And they're all ready to shoot someone at the slightest offense.
Everyone was patiently waiting in line and there was interaction. Having lived both then and now I would go back in an instant despite the conveniences of today.
When the internet first came, I remember how strange the concept was: create an online name (that was not your real name), and say whatever you want without a filter. The concept of being rude or mean without concern for retaliation was new and alien. Then we lost our innocence and freedoms after 9/11. Now we are here.
+patriciapearl2529- Only thing is, they didn't run forever. People started vehicle shopping at around 50,000 Miles. At 100k miles it was in the car crusher. IF it made it that long.
It really makes you see how rotten social media has made everything. They should play this stuff, unnarrated, on mainstream TV channels for all to see.
Social media has really destroyed a lot of things and people. All the misinformation, everyone wanting their 15 minutes of fame, people who think it’s okay to be nasty because of the anonymity. “Influencers” who influence people to do things and purchase things they shouldn’t. Worrying about acquiring “followers” and “likes.” Being asked every 5 minutes if you want to share everything with your contacts. Bombarded by things I don’t want to see all the time. At first being able to connect with people more easily was great. I have a friend in Japan that I could only write letters to or call on the phone for $200 a call so it was amazing to be able to communicate with him in real time, as well as being able to contact my friend in Germany. But now it feels as if I never have moment to myself yet I never actually see friends in person.
1984 was what I call the happy era in my life. It seemed to be a happy and hopeful year for most Americans. It seemed everything was new and fresh and you didn’t see the decay like you see today. The 2020s seem to be the decade of decay for retail like the malls. Only hardware and grocery stores it seems are doing well. I guess Americans don’t have the money to spend because the cost of housing sucks it all up. Young people have no hope today of actually buying a home now because the prices are insane. In 1984 it seemed everything was fresh, new, and alive. Not dying and decaying like today.
It depends of what type of job you have yes housing is out of reach for most but save and budget $ maybe one day you can buy one who knows what 2morrow will bring . Remember if you buy get a fixed mortgage.
+nole8923- Everything is relative. In Oct. 1981 the 30 year mortgage rate was 18.4 percent according to Freddie Mac. Once the Fed reined in inflation, the 30 year rate seesawed down to the 9 percent range, closing the decade at 9.78 percent. The current 30 year mortgage rate stands at 8.29 percent fixed. Nobody thought they could EVER afford a house THEN either. The more things change, the more they stay the same. PS. The Lebanese, Palestinians, Syrians and the Israelis were throwing rocks at each other back then too. As well as 2,000 years ago. Carter was President with the gas shortage, now we have Sleepy Joe Biden doing the same BS. Class dismissed.
@@243wayne1 What about the way people interacted and carried themselves back then vs. now? There's no denying that people in general respected one another and spoke much more kind to each other. Also, physical appearance is in the $hitter for the majority of U.S. citizens, they're grossly overweight, inked up to the max, etc., which indicates a huge lack of self respect. Road rage was always a thing, but not nearly to the extent of what we're seeing today. The "me....me....me" era is on steroids. (*Recess bell sounds*)
I was 9 years old back in 1984 and just by watching this video, you can tell that it was happier times back then, nobody had cellphones, people got along with each other, it was nobody arguing with each other, like it is today, there was no fights, people knew how to talk to each other, and the knew how to treat one another now in today's world everybody is so disrespectful it's sad. The 1980's was my childhood. The 90's was my teenage years and I miss them both. Wish I had a time machine so I can travel back in time.
I was 18... you guys, it was truly a great time. Today, when in think about how things were, It almost feels like there was a happy golucky innocence ...we were all just chill, looking at mtv videos, listening to the radio, shopping at malls, hanging out at parks, picnics, bike rides, block parties, smoking pot was considered edgy. You never even thought about being mugged or pushed onto train tracks when visiting downtown Chicago... people were Def friendlier in all Chicago neighborhoods. I grew up in the north and south sides of Chicago. Never ever had problems... ever.
It feels happy go lucky innocent because you were a teenager lmao. Chicago's crime rate in the 1980s and 1990s was significantly higher than it was in the 2000s and 2010s, only very recently has it started to climb back toward those historic highs. Chicago has been a violent city for one hundred years quite literally.
14:27 even into the early 90's most clothing stores used a 8 digit vendor-style code, manual carbon-copy credit card impression sliders, and we'd call on most checks to get an automated approval code. no credit card terminals, no barcode readers, no check readers.
I would love to go back in time on this day and walk around experiencing the atmosphere, stores, people, styles, smells, etc. Then you would find me in the parking lot checking out all the classic cars. You know how long it's been since I've seen a Chevette on the road? Also eat at several places at the food court and compare to now.😂
This was a very innocent time in my life and I miss it. I want my youth back. Looking back I wish I wouldn’t have wished it away and I’d give anything to rewind time.
It was an event to go shopping as a little girl and I grew to just adore the whole tactile process of it . There were several Malls in my area . Its just inconceivable that they would become obsolete to online experience. My grandmother never tried on anything . She would take large amounts home to try ongiving her the excuse to " return " and exchange . Kept that routine up continuously as the sales did also . This video really brought back good memories when my son was a baby and id take him shopping . ❤💙
For the younger viewers here, this precisely why us teens hit the mall every single weekend! Nothing like hanging out, chasing the opposite sex & eating whatever we wanted to. Oh, & let's not forget that we could smoke while walking around 😂😂! Glad that ended. But yes, the mall was the place to be in 1984 ❤
I was a newborn infant when this was filmed. I thought I'd been born into a bright and magical place but it was Christmas and it was the 80s and I really miss my childhood when I see these videos but I'm so glad we have this footage 😊Thank you!
This brings back such happy memories for me. I was in high school in 1984. Believe it or not, we'd get dressed up, just to go to the mall! It was THE place to hang out with your friends. Sorry to say, we will never experience this again. I'm just so thankful I got to enjoy it and can still remember what it was like.
This is how I remember the malls during the holidays. No parking. Everyone in the holiday spirit. Now you go to the mall during the holidays and everyone is in a bad mood. The mall is half empty. The internet with all the good it has done has also had just as much of a negative effect. Just IMO. Kids Born in the late 90s and later just will never understand how simple life was. Yes it had its problems and issues, but you knew your neighbors, there was human to human contact, the holidays were magical, going to the mall was actually fun. I truly miss my grandparents and relatives who were all born in the 1920s. I would give anything to spend one more holiday with them. I really took things for granted as a kid and into my teens. I couldn’t wait to grow up now that I’m grown up with kids of my own, I truly regret not living in the moment when I was younger. Life goes by fast my friends. Now that we are so distracted and disconnected it feels like it goes by even faster. These videos do help a little though. Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
I, too, miss my grandparents and now my sweet mother who has passed too.😔 Time sure does fly by. I can still remember the smells and the feeling of Christmas when I was a kid. I just can't seem to recreate them on my own, and I know that I never will because those that made it so special are gone now and it was them who made it special. I, too, wish I hadn't taken it for granted, thinking they would somehow always be here. This life is cruel, and it does go by so fast. It is nice to have these memories, but sometimes it feels like a curse too to see it knowing that you can never go back. Much of the time now, I just rush through the holidays as they are just reminders of what used to be.
I loveee these! I play in the background while working or cleaning. They’re so calming to me, and bring back soothing memories. Please don’t ever stop ❤

More modesty. Only some families even had cable TV. Video stores were limited. The F word was extremely inappropriate. People had to walk more. Very little plastic surgery. 1984 was definitely the first full year of the 80s culture as you can tell from the hair and fashion in this video. If you watch the videos from 80 through 82 and parts of 83 you can see that late 70s culture still heavily represented, but here it's like a different world as the 80s have arrived in full bloom. @@mark3464 I was 12 in '84. A lot of it is because, the rate was high, but crimes were concentrated more in the inner cities then. In rural areas it was much lower. It's hard to read the entrance sign at the beginning of the video, but I think this is Cumberland Mall in Atlanta, GA. There was another Cumberland Mall in New Jersey, but I think this video is of the Atlanta mall. I noticed there were a lot of older people (over 50yo) shopping there. It was safe for senior citizens to shop in the mall during that time. Not anymore.
it has to be Georgia. The clothing is too light to be New Jersey at that time of year and a few of the people who talked had southern-ish accents. definitely didn't sound like NJ. No bags from NYC metro-specific department stores from that time either like Sterns, A&S.

You're just nostalgic for your childhood. For an adult, the 80s was also a stressful, confusing time just like today.

Yeah, Christmas 1984 I was 14 and working washing dishes in a restaurant in my local mall. Best of times. The future was wide open.
Same, except I had retired from my paper route the year prior.
Also 14 then, it was amazing and exciting to see how packed the mall was. True Christmas spirit everywhere. A shared experience

It was a dynamite of a product that took the U.S. by storm.
I was 12 and my mother was so excited to have got me me on of those dolls. She had adoption papers, a name, everything. 1984 was a big year for a lot of things and turning era and trends. i haven't seen a mall this crowded in 20 years
Malls aren’t the same anymore this is a very crowded scene now people push each other always in a hurry cuss each other out if you don’t move fast enough at least back then you could look at other stores as you walked and could look around a store without being rushed or pushed
I was 16 and a sophomore in 1984, what an amazing time it was. The future looked bright, computers were becoming mainstream in the home, and the movies were awesome. If only we realized back then how special that era was compared to today. It's quite sad, really.
Omg, it's a mall! Back when people liked being around each other, were courteous and respectful!
Back when society wasn't filled over the brim with desperate third world migrants, drugs and parents actually had time for their kids.
People still are courteous and respectful, try stepping away from your computer and go outside once in a while
You got that right and dressed classy to like that lady and gentleman in the jewelry store they don’t dress like that anymore now it’s pajama bottoms tight colored hair shorts tops to short very different scene
Dutch I work in retail I don’t know where your seeing these people I applaud you for having the opportunity seeing this but I beg to differ people are rude no respect there constantly yelling stealing cussing each other out Im from Arizona and it’s nuts way different era
Good times. 😂
That mall was just demolished a few months ago.
Why did you divorce him?
@jankaufmann4305 Oh lots of reasons. Mainly because he abandoned me and moved back to Arizona to be with his new girlfriend. Something about that just kind of rubbed me the wrong way. 😁
Im literally brought to tears seeing this. I miss this time so so very much. I was young and happy and healthy. My family was all alive and happy. We had hope and Christmas and holidays were magical. The energy in the air at the Malls during Christmas was wonderful. Christmas songs, the crowds, everyone happy. You could just sit and people watch and just take it all in.
I couldn’t have said it any better. I was 11 then and I long to be right back there. We were the last tough generation.
Teenagers always went to the mall, met their friends there ate at food court, it was a thing.

Me too 1984 was my final year at school and I wouldn't trade those memories for anything. What a great and uncomplicated time it was!
Same here. I'd forgotten how very slender and relatively healthy everyone appeared to be.
I 100% agree with everything you said.@@RazorFriendly
I can't understand the low pants thing. Thought it would have been gone by now. It looks so ridiculous. Came from the jails.

Reagan had just been reelected by a mind-blowingly electoral.

I Remember This So Vividly...1983/1984 We Wanted An Atari 2600 For Christmas...Our Mother Would Not Buy It For Us...She Did One Better Surprised Us And Bought Us An Atari 5200 For Christmas Of 1985...
I was hoping to hear "Do They Know It's Christmas?" playing on the radio waves. That would've REALLY set the tone for that era!
Something that stands out is how people/adults are sitting on the floor, against the wall, eating their lunch. There seems to be a more casual attitude about things, and you just don't see that as much these days.
I recall our parents letting us go off and shop for them and meeting back up at the food court!
Love the Christmas decorations, I miss going to the Mall. great video.
I bet back in the 80’s, people were like, “why are you filming us shopping?” “It’s the busiest time of year!”
But it’s a genius idea! To capture the past, to one of the best eras of all time.
I grew up in the 80s. Can confirm that most people back them were excited to be on anyone's camera. It's so different now as everyone has their phone out just waiting for a confrontation with anyone.
@@1981mrdavid it was pretty unusual to see anyone with a video camera back then... we probably thought we were going to be on the news or something lol
Wishing I could go back to this time. Life was so damn good
I remember the radioflyer red wagon we got for Christmas that year. I was as happy as a kid could be.
I got one for christmas in the late 90s. The whole thing was made out of strong metal with thick paint. If you see them today, they are almost entirely plastic
Amazing footage this is how we go back in time, I was 11 at the time and this was so much better then today. I would go back in heartbeat.
The vibe pre- 9/11 was epic. I was 3. I miss those days!! No one walking into shit on their phone. Ppl interacting & smiling instead of scowling!
Right! I live in Albuquerque where nobody smiles anymore, and I do mean nobody!
Long waiting line , people look nice , they keep calm and they feel comfortable 😊 No stress 😎
Cumberland Mall in Atlanta. The then regional department store shopping bags always help identify the area.
I was searching comments for this, I knew it was a metro Atlanta mall by the Rich's & Davison's bags. I still miss Rich's, the best department store. I looked forward to their Harvest Sale every year.
I've been to Cumberland! I'm from the West Coast but my best friend, RIP was from Atlanta and I visited all the time.
This was amazing. The idea of this today makes me a nervous wreck but back then I would haven been right in the middle of it. Could have watched this for 24hrd straight. Ty!
I think you’re correct. I see Rich’s bags …..that was a big department store in Atlanta before they consolidated with Macys. Good eyes!!
@@dv1216 Rich’s AND bags that say Davison’s/Macy’s!
it has to be Georgia. The clothing is too light to be New Jersey at that time of year and a few of the people who talked had southern-ish accents. definitely didn't sound like NJ. No bags from NYC metro-specific department stores from that time either like Sterns, A&S.
No? Why?
There were people carrying shopping bags that said Cumberland Mall, and Davison’s was definitely an Atlanta store.
I go back in time in a heartbeat. I just love noticing how life used to be compared to what it is now and I’m much older now, but I’m glad I had that time in my life.
This video is amazing I'm lost for words this video brings back a lot of memories. It's amazing to see all these people shopping without a cell phone it's sad that we're tied to our cell phones and our computers nowadays. I want to say thanks for uploading this video it shows younger Generations that they don't need cell phones and computers to shop.......
makes me sad tho in a way , watching this video alot of these people are all grown up or have gone!!!!!
I am still here. Grown, yes. But only physicality 😉
Yes I agree
I was 2 years old, and I'm here😅
@@fec9496 awwww i love it i was 14 yrs old and all these videos just make me sad , wish we can go back one more time!!
