    Bill Bill was so excited…
Reminds me of receiving my thank you from our school district for 10 years of teaching. They printed out a certificate and handed it to me in front of the whole staff. We all had the thats it look. A few days later my husband received his thank you from his job for 10 years of working there. He got to pick a gift out of a catalog, received a substantial bonus, and a small 10 year statue. He felt so bad for me he picked out a coach purse from the gift catalog and gave it to me when it arrived.

They brought an ice cream truck for teacher appreciation week for my teachers. The only thing that the kids ever got was a visit from the Italian ice truck. Yes, I said Italian ice. One of my hometown’s most beloved businesses was an Italian ice shop. We got Italian ice cups about the size of a shot glass full of Italian ice while the teachers got full on gigantic ice cream sundaes. They get the ice cream every year while the students got the Italian ice when they were still nice to kids. That happened over a decade ago.

I recall when that culture started in the late 80s and 90s. In an effort to force equality in the name of Fairness. Thus those who might need a little extra are left without enough. And others with too much. But we're not allowed to share either..

My mom’s a home health nurse, so on nurse’s day, they always get a bunch of cupcakes and stuff. Issue is, they always leave it in the office, where the nurses rarely, if ever go. The only time they’re even able to make it there is in the evenings after they’ve finished with their patients for the day….which means there’s nothing left, as the office staff always eats it all before they get there. If you know any nurses or doctors, treat them right - their jobs certainly don’t :’)

Nah, not everyone. No one even knew Respiratory Therapists existed until the Covid pandemic. They got nothing- maybe a 2% raise every couple of years (after years with pay freezes). Stick around for a while and you no longer get step increases because you are at top of scale. Because of the pandemic and all the travel contracts making employee retention challenging, they were offered a retention bonus of $1,000- but only if they stayed another 7 months. The hospital system, which received millions of dollars in federal pandemic relief funds, also threw them a 2% raise two years in a row. Where did the pandemic relief funds go? To pay travel contracts, executive bonuses, and lawsuit settlements and attendant legal costs.

The chef (yes, we had a chef) would go all out: steak medallions in Bernanaise sauce or chicken cordon bleu, etc. Our dept would decorate the large conference room; tables had linen, china and crystal. The docs would receive a nice swag bag from HR. The CEO would give a nice presentation. The docs appreciated the effort and sentiment.
Our dept would plan for weeks and we were allowed a large budget. We'd laugh because the docs told us the other hosp in town (the only other acute care hosp) would give them a deli sandwich in a box with a measly swag bag. Wow!
