  • Timing belt replacement: 3 to 6 hours ($175 / $700 / $1200
    WARNING: Failure to properly install the timing belt, tensioner, etc., will likely result in internal damage to the engine. You should ALIGN THE TIMING marks before removing the timing belt, and INSURE the crank and both cams are properly aligned with the TIMING MARKS, then roll the engine over a full cycle prior to starting the engine.
    In this video I helped a friend replace the timing belt on his 2010 S40 R Design Volvo. The is NO NEED to install a cam locking tool on the back of the cams unless you are removing a cam hub for a front cam seal replacement. This process should be the same for the following vehicles:
    S40: 2005 through 2012
    V50: 2005 through 2012
    C70: 2007 through 2013
    C30: 2007 through 2013
    As shown in the video, I did NOT use any cam locking tool.
    If I find torque values for the parts, I'll post them later.

    Thanks again, Robert DIY! As always, great tutorial! I have a question regarding a 2006 V50 which had a broken timing belt = needing a new head. Everything is together again (following your videos for great help!), but I'm getting a crank - no start now. Used the cam locking tool in the rear of the cams, have all timing marks set up, then hand-turn the crank x2, and the exhaust cam pulley mark is off about 1/2 tooth! Everything is tight, torqued to specs. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

    Great video. I am in the process of doing the belt on a 2009 S40 and this is helping a lot. I do have one question: how do you time this typeof VVT gear? Mine, on the intake, had absolutely no play in it (camshaft lock tool in place). Is it broken? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

      On your other video, CVVT and VVT hub, timing from 12/10/17, you show how the vvt gear needs to be installed, show that it has some play, and that you must place it all the way clockwise to put the belt on. My gear looks like the one in the video here, and doesn't have any play in it.

    • @stephanechabot1175
      @stephanechabot1175 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess my assumption that all VVT used by Volvo (some are blue, some are yellow, mine have a different shape) needed to be timed the same way, I am now curious as how my car's VVT design works if no play is present (and why Volvo did not key a gear that must be installed the same every time).

After watching your video, i did set my 1999 s40 1.9turbo timing accurately with a self fabricated cam locking tool, and no over advanced or over retarded codes afterward. Months later, rubber pieces from broken serpentine belt found its way into the crankshaft timing sproc so it spun freely and engine jumped timing and all valves got ruined. Now i wanna replace the engine. Can i swap the 1.9turbo vvt engine with a 1.9turbo non-vvt engine. I know i might get camshaft solenoid and over advanced or over retarded codes by doing this. The only good aftermarket engine i got from the volvo parts dealership in Lagos Nigeria is the 1.9t non vvt engine (no vvt hub in the exhaust camshaft).
