I think that's why this movie works so well compared to the sequels. In this one, John's just a guy. A cop, yeah, but not a super cop, not a super hero. He's just an average guy put in an extreme situation. And they cast a guy known for comedy, not action.

    • @dawg897

Fun fact: when the producers hired Bruce Willis, a tv actor whose first two films were box office bombs, they paid him $5 million for this role, which at the time put him as one the highest paid actor in the industry. There was almost universal backlash from the Hollywood & Media press. This was unheard of and an extremely risky gamble, as Willis was known as a tv comedian, not an action star. The producers declared that they had faith in Willis as an action star and that he was worth that salary. They were proven right as Die Hard became a huge box office hit and established Bruce Willis as a bonafide action star.

Great reaction you two. I loved Amber's reaction. "I really don't like this guy." Several scenes later bad guy she doesn't like gets punched in the face. Amber, "Yes that guy needed punched." Her facial expressions alone had me laughing so hard.
What I love most about this is redemption the spirit of what Christmas is. Holly was amazing woman who knew what her husband was doing and still had guts to remain silent. She grew to see the why she fell in love with her husband (Holly was very loyal and understood what her husband was doing). John grew to see the why he loved his wife so much and that her dreams matter too and he needed to support her as she him. It is two-way street like ALL marriages.
Al and John's relationship is what you could call a soldier's bond. This movie showed race/creed don't matter we are human beings. Al knows being a cop what John is facing, and he is doing it alone. Al was paramount in John's success. John needed support of Al.
The movie broke mold because it did not start a perfectly built man, but an average man (cop) thrust into extraordinary situation, and he had to rely on his training and instincts to survive.
