When I was in high school I got bored in study hall, so I grabbed a random book off the shelf. It was Prince Felix Youssoupoff's autobiography, and his account of Rasputin's murder FREAKED ME OUT!!!
I don't know how that book ended up in a tiny school in the middle of Illinois, but it taught me that history could be truly fascinating.

same my parents would spare money on trivial stuff like sodas, expensive toys etc but they bought books adapted to our age of course, and later on we had a library full of encyclopedia about history, geography, medicine (not kidding ) , naturalisme etc the list goes on and on. They did the same with music from baroque to symphonie, from western and Arabic ( I am araboeuropean from Maghreb so I do have also Amazigh blood). My parents wanted us to see the world as a beautiful colorful masterpiece to explore. And learn I did, and exp,ore I did with my dear Hong kongese husband we decided to go meet history, geography and cultures live with our three little children. From Middel east to Asia( we didn't simply visite those places we lived there too), from Norway to Polynesia.......we are still on the road and no we are not rich we just take enough to live and enjoy the beautiful painting that is the world. My kids are adults now and they continue by studying to keep the painting as beautiful as possible. ( it doesn't mean that I think that the earth is flat!). I am sorry that you lost such precious tresors that are books but I wish you to find a way to started all over and maybe explore the world too. Wish you the best from Belgium.
PS Pardon my English as it is not my first language.

Soldiers typically swear loyalty to the state, although in monarchic countries they also do it to the sovereign. This can result in split loyalties when they perceive that the sovereign may not be acting in the best interests of the nation (or the people).
That’s why Hitler insisted that German soldiers swear loyalty to him personally rather than Germany

The old Russian calendar was 13 days off from the Gregorian calendar. That’s why Orthodox Russians celebrate Christmas on January 7, while Catholics and Protestants do it on December 25

  • @alexandruianu8432
    @alexandruianu8432 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Orthodox countries at the time did in fact use the Julian calendar. It was after the war that civil calendars were switched to Gregorian. A few years later some national churches switched to the Revised Julian calendar. It works like the Gregorian, but it has a better leap year system for the next few millennia, as it was devised by Milanković in 1920.

The two younger daughters were Maria and Anastasia. Anastasia is the most well-known because she's the one who many people hoped/thought had somehow survived.

Yeah, after the abdication of Nicholas II, his son was to be the new emperor with Nicholas’s brother as the regent until Alexei reaches the age of maturity. But Alexei’s uncle basically said “screw that” and renounced his regency the following day

Great video as always. Got a bit late to it, but I'm here :D
I kinda want to talk about the thing that fascinates me the most about Rasputin's death. The prevalence of the myth surrounding it shows how people wish for history to be more exciting. Most people know Youssoupoff's initial account of the event because it's weird and interesting, but not nearly as many know that he later admitted to embelishing the story or that the autopsy showed that bullet to the face was what killed him. It really is a window to how much of an unfair advantage an entertaining story has over the truth.
Same with the October revolution. It may be Soviet propaganda, but even in the west most people believe that the revolution was a bloody affair. Of course, there is an element of some people mixing it up with the Russian civil war, but it's also at least partially due to the fiction having a much easier time getting into the public conciousness than the mundane truth.

Fun fact: the February Revolution happened in Marched and the October Revolution happened in November. That was the case because Russia was using the Julian calendar, which was 2-3 weeks ahead of the Gregorian calendar. I believe Russia changed their calendary system in the 20's.

Hold up, I'm pretty sure Trotsky was killed in Mexico and I got a FUNNY STORY about it.
Mexico at the time had an artist couple, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, both of them I hate, but Trotsky in time managed to get in Frida's pants and they got into an affair, Rivera found this out and even though he had multiple affairs on Kahlo, he got PISSED and beat the shit out of Trotsky, cause Rivera was a chunky boy, after this Trotsky lived alone in an apartment away from Rivera and it was there that he got attacked, still in Mexico City.

The execution of the Romanov Royal family was indeed one that was very barbaric and unprofessional in its nature. The first volley instantly killed the Tsar, the Tsarina, and four of the family’s retainers. However, the children survived (one only wounded). When the Bolsheviks discovered their mistake, they proceeded to drag the children into the next room, some by their hair while they kicked and shoved them about. These beatings soon turned to them bayoneting the children multiple times until they finally ended their misery with a shot to each of their heads. Even when they dragged the bodies out of the basement, one of the children was still alive and they finished her off with another shot to the head. They then proceeded to beat up the servants and execute the family’s pets, mostly by bayonet. The only member of the Romanov Royal family to have survived that night was Alexis’ spaniel; Joy who was later found abandoned and adopted by a British Army officer who was part of the Allied Expeditionary forces during the Civil War.
You can argue all you want about how terrible Nicholas was as a leader, but he certainly did not deserve such a fate, let alone his children.

St.Petersburg was built in the swamps of Southern Karelia on Golf of Finland and became Russian capitol in 1703. The youngest daughter of Nikolas was Anastasia; her and her younger brother bodies have never been found and that created rumors of her survival; hence the Hollywood’s movie” Anastasia”.
In 1918 Lenin was shot, but survived. There is a strong belief it was Stalin’s attempt to take power. As a result the Red Terror intensified. Lenin, brutal in Red Terror, that he promised would happen to retain Bolsheviks Dictatorship, reversed his policies in 1920, establishing New Economics era. That allowed Russia to restore its non- existing economy. Foreign funds started to flow,; specialists from Germany, England and the USA reignited factories and plants, private farms started producing foods. Within short time country shifted from dust ball to almost prosperous country. Was Lenin, at the end of his Marxist road, disillusioned? But his death in January 1924 and Stalin taking power brought this brief prosperity to the end. Immediately, he ordered mass arrests of kulaks- successful farmers, expropriation of their land and all produce, and exile of most of them to Siberia; annexation of all foreign own properties and funds and followed their expulsions. The Golodomor- mass starvation began. Millions perished in that period. Most of Lenin’s compatriots were executed, including Sverdlov, Kirov, Kamenev. The NKVD chief commissar Dzerszinsky was conducting cleansing of Party and Military ranks himself.
