  • Tim Dunn may not be a household name, but staff writer Russell Gold explains why he is someone Texans should know. As Texas politics drifted toward Christian nationalism and right-wing extremes, staff writer Russell Gold wanted to know who was calling the shots. All roads led to Tim Dunn, the focus of his feature in the March 2024 issues of Texas Monthly, “The Billionaire Who Runs Texas.”

Using Christian values as a whip to drive a political social agenda is surely the least "Christian" thing a person could do. It is the opposite of Christ's teachings, yet they want to be in charge of everything. They cling to wealth and power and they want to tell me about Jesus? And we have to listen to all that hatred for these people or those people when Jesus told us to love each other despite our differences. The idea of a "Christian State" will work out every bit as good as the Jewish State, Iran or the Holy Roman Empire has worked out. - I'm just an observant Heathen.

We've devolved into a society of mock lords supported by a nation of serfs living without human rights. This state of affairs benefits the billionaire class who, by the way, bought the government out from under the populace decades ago, in the 1980s. We hear a lot about our 'freedom' in America, and the reason for that is we don't actually have much of it. Nations with human rights enshrined for their citizens don't have to brainwash their people into believing they're 'free' for the simple reason that they're too busy living their lives, FREELY.

Old Testament. Follow the example in the new lead by Christ, Paul, and the rest of the Apostolic gang. If you find wealth like that endorsed in the New Testament, you're better than me. Everything I read under the new Covenant rally does demonize wealth. Don't look for tension with the Old Testament, just follow the instructions and example in the New Testament. No one likes it, but wealth is simply not looked on well in the New Testament. Some things changed drastically from the OT to the NT. Christians will never admit it, but rules/ requirements changed and it's silly to say otherwise. I'm sure you can find all the typical quotes that I would give, but I'll say "it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven". Obviously a rough quote, but you get the idea.@@NosebergEatzbugsVonShekelstein

The original Constitution of the United States that was ratified in 1789 had only ONE REFERENCE TO RELIGION: [Article 6] No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any Office or Public Trust under the United States.
The de facto motto of the United States, adopted as part of the Great Seal of the U.S. by an Act of Congress in 1782, was E. Pluribus Unum (Out of Many, One). Congress changed it 174 years later (1956) to "In God We Trust".
The ORIGINAL 'Pledge of Allegiance' was written in 1892 by Baptist Minister Francis Bellamy who DID NOT INCLUDE the words "Under God". Those were added by Congress 62 year later (1954).
The U.S. didn't issue Paper Currency until 1861, & 'In God We Trust' didn't appear on it for 96 years (1957).
“As the government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian Religion" ~ Treaty of Tripoli; initiated under President George Washington, 1796, signed into law by President John Adams, 1797, ratified unanimously by the Senate, 1797, published in full in all 13 states, with no record of complaint or dissent.
"I am for freedom of religion and against all maneuvers to bring about a legal ascendancy of one sect over another."
--Thomas Jefferson, letter to Elbridge Gerry, January 26, 1799
“Christianity neither is, nor ever was part of the common law.” Thomas Jefferson
“Religion and government will both exist in greater purity the less they are mixed together.” James Madison
“The government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion.” John Adams
"In every country, in every age, the priest has always been hostile to liberty...He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection of his own."
    Thomas Jefferson
Founding Father Thomas Paine on Christianity. “The most detestable wickedness, the most horrid cruelties, and the greatest miseries that have afflicted the human race, have had their origin in this thing called revelation, or revealed religion…”

The fact that average US voter refuses the fact that a text book christian is much closer to a communist than to a capitalist is just hilarious to me.

Maybe because they're smarter than you? Congratulations -- in one comment you've shown you understand neither communism nor Christianity.

We don't need Texas. They need America. Considering they don't even follow Supreme Court orders, they're already not American anymore. Time for them to go.@@neosapienz7885
