Definitely need some Standalone in your life. I've been running megasquirt on my L series for over 15 years... it's awesome. They're pretty reliable up to 14 lb of boost if you're just running the regular NA l28e. They like 18 to 20 degrees of ignition timing at full Boost... you can go up 17psi but after 20 the lands aren't too happy. And it's a little bit too much pressure for the stock head gasket after that. I've been running 20-plus pounds of boost on a l28et stock bottom end little bit of water meth... ARP head studs MLS cometic pretty good recipe for 300-350 horsepower. You may want to consider a smaller exhaust housing on the turbo. .63 AR is a ton of fun
Hell yes, awesome to hear from someone who’s got the experience! Thanks for the advice. 100% going stand-alone ecu. I run megasquirt in my turbo bmw and love it. Honestly, I think I’ll get it tuned to somewhere around 11-12psi and be happy with it! Make all the right noises and live forever.
Can you please make a Full Build list with pricing and maybe links? I just picked up a Datsun 280zx Turbo 1981 and I'm planning on swapping it into my already running Datsun 280z 1976 Coupe. Thank you.
I’ve got a Datsun myself a 1983 280ZX turbo and I was planning on twin turboing and I wanted to know more about where you went I like how clean your setup looks
I’m thinking of buying my son a 240 or a 260 Z CAR..IT WILL BE HIS FIRST CAR..not sure if I should just get a stock one, or look for a V8 upgrade, as a LS swap is a lot easier to run I’d think, no freaking spaghetti mess , I hated looking for a vac leak on those things when they came into the shop.l recall we could buy a Z car for 2500 bucks back in the 1990’s..should of bought a bunch of them, it’s like the iroc Z’s it was easy to find them for 2-3 k, now some are selling 30-40k , nuts..
@@itsmikelake I don't know how you afford it lol. I just have the one project 280zx and haven't worked on it for months because of the cost. I'm in Bendigo and just struggle finding parts.
Not too sure on the clearance have you had to replace the starter yet? looks like it might be just a bit of a bugger to get out nice and easy like it was before mounting this hopefully I’m wrong
@@itsmikelake Yeah bad influence may be just the term, I had planned on doing a full custom exhaust manifold placing the turbo where the battery was located but seeing how easy that was to convert the stock manifold has got me thinking....I mean full custom would look sick as but doing it your way was super quick and made a lot of senseI I will be following this with interest....Have a stack of plans for mine but its still on the rotisserie getting the body repaired at the moment...
Maybe I missed it, but where did you feed the oil return line from the turbo into the sump, also diameter of this pipe.? What are you doing about vacuum for the brakes and dash vac. operated controls? Peter Smith 280ZX
thank you for providing this video, i was wondering if you could provide a link to the exact turbo kit you have, because im trying to throw one on mine
Amazing build! I have the same car and I also have a question; you didn’t modify the pistons or any of the sort so that you can run more boost with lower compression? If not and you’re able to do it straight up, rad m8
Thanks bro! No need to modify the engine if you’re running low boost (12psi or less). These engines have 8.5:1 compression at it is so perfect for turbo! Some ARP head studs would be good, I’ll probably do that.
Sorry for the delay on this one guys. Stoked on how it turned out! 🤘🏻
Great job guys! I did a home built version of this turbo set up on my 280z here in the states! I love my turbo l28 and you guys did a hell of a job!

So good to see this coming together. Sick build!!
Thanks bro, it’s been awesome fun!
Feels like I’ve been hanging years to watch this happen. Nice to see the spooky boi on. Yeow!
Taken inspiration from your rad 4k turbo build my man! Bring on that 7k though haha

This is an underrated video. Thanks for doing it
Cheers Aaron 😁
The "reach around" turbo build. There. it has a name now.
I am absolutely speechless dude! That car sounds mental. I totally didn't it would sound so cool.
Thanks bro! Love it aye. Just you wait & see how it sounds on full noise on the dyno haha
Just bought one. Love the videos!
Hell yeah Jack! Congrats bro. Cheers 😁🤙🏻

I drive mine almost weekly and it’s absolutely amazing. I’ll be dropping a new video on the 280zx very soon
Clean workshop good to see
Looks great! Need to install megasquirt!! And big boost!!
Thanks bro! It's getting a Haltech 😁. Can't wait to film the vids!
@@itsmikelake Good!! will follow your build!
@@itsmikelake currently running ECU master black with my l28 turbo.
Yee yee been hanging to see this 💯🤜🤛
Nice work ! Good to see. Have a turbo manifold and turbo.. hopefully soon would put it on soon

Love this approach. Getting to this stage soon on my build. Have you a full spec on the turbo you used. Looks like a nice alternative.
Kilowatt damn guys what’s wrong with freaking good old fashion horsepower
Very nice work. Keen to see once it's all tuned up. Been waiting a while for this video lol.
Same bro. Haha building all these cars isn’t cheap 😅. A constant balancing act haha

Love the sound 🎶🎶🎶😍😍
Right?! Can’t wait to get the exhaust done and hear it at full noise on the dyno 😈
This is so sick! This is inspirational for when I one day turbo my 280 😬👌
Ok all bs aside, nice car, and it’s cool to see a few car guys from the other side of the world..hi from texas..
Sadness out- Happiness in😅

Hey George! No issue at all with this so far. I've heat wrapped everything and it's done the job nicely.
Really lovin the channel dude it's wicked as hope it keeps building up for you man !
Thank you bro 😊. Here’s hoping haha. I’m just having a blast making the content 🤘🏻
Been waiting my bro leeehgoo
Always appreciate your gee ups my dude! So pumped with the build
Hey Mike, do the GMF guys have a kit to mimic your build available to order? Love the build mate
I can hook you up with Damon if you’d like him to build you a kit? Dm me on Instagram 😁
That worked out pretty mint, You're giving me ideas for my one lol!

Ahhhh the old reach around pipe 🤣🤣
Wicked vid as always man and sick build, hope you keep getting more subs!
If you keep that stock setup, tighten the spring in the air flow meter buy a couple of teeth, otherwise it will bog down.
Yeah I’ve tightened the spring a bit. She runs sweet but not keeping it as the airflow meter is ugly as hellll haha
26:33 he said exactly that....
Maybe I missed it, but where did you feed the oil return line from the turbo into the sump, also diameter of this pipe.? What are you doing about vacuum for the brakes and dash vac. operated controls? Peter Smith 280ZX
Would you consider mocking up another identical system and selling it ?
Can do if the price is right!
Have you had any issues due to removing the transmission braces to locate the turbo inlet pipes between the oilpan and transmission?
No issues. Works perfectly!
That’s a nice blue what’s the paint code
Can you guys make a list of the parts used I have a 81 280zx turbo and really need help with ideas
thank you for providing this video, i was wondering if you could provide a link to the exact turbo kit you have, because im trying to throw one on mine
Why does it seem to be stalling? I'm getting ready to start a 280zx build with my son so I'm wondering if there's a tuning issues right off the bat?
One of the cooler pipes had popped off and I didn’t notice 😅. Ran perfect when I reconnected the next day as you’ll see in the next vidro
Hi mate can you be able to send me a link of where you bought this turbo? Thanks mate, I’m having fun of what you’re doing cars
Man every time I watch one of your 280zx videos it makes me wanna get off my lazy ass and work on mine haha
I have a question bro, i have a L28 but its a non e variant, am i still able to do this? Im still new and learning as i build my car
Awsome build mike , planning one soon myself ! what kinda head and block are ya running ?
Thanks! This is a stock block with the n42 head. Completely original motor from this car. Untouched and unopened haha.
Turbo piping. Is it blocking the starter?
My question why didnt you guys use a solenoid on your turbo isnt it way better for being tuned with the engine ?
We will use the boost controller solenoid eventually. But a boost tee works just fine also.
What did you record this with? The quality is great!
Thanks! I use the canon g7x mk2 camera 😁
@@itsmikelake thanks! What lens?
Geez I look like trash in the second half of this video 🤣
It’s understandable given the antics of the previous night 🤣
Hey Mike, what head is this engine running?
Hey Darren, I have the N42 block but no idea what head i'm running to be honest! Haha
Could you drop all the parts
What parts specifically?
would they do a supercharge on a scorpion
Why did you push the engine so much from the momment it started? It was a cold start, you should have give it a little time in idle before pushing it.
It got enough time before pushing haha. I didn’t take it over 4k revs the whole drive!
How well does the bosch le jetronic react to this turbo
I run a haltech ecu
@@itsmikelake ohk but what was the first ecu with the afm meter and how did it respond

so y are they so fast cause its inline 6 and it has big pistons engine looks big for a 6 cyl
Was the engine from the beggining in the 280z
Yes this is the original engine
@@itsmikelake so the l28 is the stock engine in the 280z?
"How deah you!" 🤣
Haha, how dear you mod your car the way you want to mod it!!
What’s the name of the turbo , I wanna buy it
Pulsar g25-550 👌🏻
Wait is the l28 stock
Stock with a turbo bolted on. Will have haltech and dyno tune soon
Who needs to replicate a twin turbo l28 build when you can add one fat turbo
Haha yesss single turbo for life!
@@itsmikelake and easier to maintain
Needs to learn the difference between mounted and tacked up, lol..😅guess he’d call a base tune with 1 degree of timing ,and a ARF of 13.1 tuned, lol..
Ahh so which one of you is reaching and who’s doing the grabbing, lol…😮
Nah not the Greta meme 🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣 couldn’t help it haha
