Disused Railway walk Ashchurch to Malvern

  • Disused Railway walk Ashchurch to Malvern looking to see what remains, as well as enjoying a good walk although it would take several days to complete on foot. Starting in Ashchurch ending in Malverns lovely station, and calling into Tewkesbury and Upton on Severn on the way. This line has everything, tunnels, river crossings, beautiful stations and stunning countryside as well. Starting in Ashchurch we can see where the railway began and then follow it into the centre of Tewkesbury as far as the flour mills and small dock area. Leaving Tewksbury the line travels over the flood plane and through a tunnel heading for ripple. Here it has the river Severn for company before crossing to the other side just after Ripple Station, which still stands today but is now a private dwelling. Having crossed the Severn the railway makes its way past Upton on Severn, then wends through the flattish countryside passing fields and farms before joining the main line through Malvern and so to the wonderfully preserved old station. My passion has been walking, I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s last year and walking does not come naturally any more, however the more I walk the easier it gets, for now anyway.
    I hope these video’s will inspire others to keep going and hanging on in there.

      The problem with the music is copywrite issues, but I managed to sneak some in on my North Cornwall videos. Got away with it so far. P.W.

    Brilliant video. Just out of the western end of Tewkesbury station there are some sleepers set into the ground, and also in the town centre itself there is a limestone column left over from the original station that is now attatched to the dominos pizza. one more thing was the engine shed located next to the maltings flats demolished in the 80s.

    Hello Ron, as I sit here making endless card kits of tunnel entrances and bridges in the evenings I watch these over and over again. They don't take quite as long as the real thing nor is there any danger of workmen being crushed under mounds of rubble. Not quite as detailed as the wonderous things you find for us but I hope you will approve when you see them in place.
    I have to thank you for the glorious things you take the trouble of finding and for the inspiration from the old photographs. If only I had the space that Brunel had to make his wonderful railway!

      @@ParkinsonsWalks I get reminded to go to bed at 10:30pm. That doesn't mean I pay it any attention...... Here is a thought for you, especially as I have the same birthday as Brunel. There is much debate over the Box tunnel as to whether it's really true that on the morning of the 9th of April the sun shines down the length of the tunnel. I have been many times but of course you can't get trackside to verify the claim.

      @@ParkinsonsWalks Not much I'm afraid. It's funny that the skeleton at the moment looks nothing like the end product. I'm now looking at a canal lock that is roughly 9 inches long. Steam and canal seem to live side by side for the same reason - needs to follow the flat land or tunnel through it.

    My goodness, yet another excellent video and an area I know well. You seem to have covered all my old haunts - Stroud, Chalford, Berkeley area and now I find this. Although born in Stroud, I now live between Evesham and Pershore but work in Bristol. So, for the past few years (save for COVID) have been taking my old car (a 27-year-old Volvo) to Ashchurch and catching the train to Bristol. I often, of a cold dark morning on the platform, wondered about that old water tower but did not know about the paths you explored. It is a shame they are not now cycleways to explore for pleasure (I can only get my wife to cycle on off-road tracks - she hates the busy road traffic).

      Hi Mel, I feel the same as your wife, main roads are dangerous. The Forest of Dean is a great place to cycle off road along a lot of old rail track beds, You have probably tried it already but if not you should. Take care. Ron

Great Malvern, is, I think, my favourite railway station - just drips character and time thankfully has passed it by. Your musical choices on this , 'The Armed Man' and 'Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence' echo the visuals superbly. Well done Sir!

    The old fuel storage depot at Ripple is an interesting place in its self, with its loading docks standing in the river looking like something from War of the Worlds, there is also a very good pillbox where the railway cross's the river near the depot, the whole site was very active during the war with barges offloading fuel into the storage tanks to then be pumped to airfields around the country through a national network, I belive its still in use albeit at a reduced level.

    The building in Station Road now retirement flats was a Maltings. I spent some of my Dowty apprenticeship in it when it was used by Dowty Servos. Attached to the Maltings, was the engine shed, now sadly gone, which was used as Goods In and Dispatch in Dowty days.

    I believe the tunnel at Malvern station was to allow first class passengers direct access to what was then a hotel. Someone told me that the unusual appearance of the Station was down to Lady Foley, then a power in the land, who insisted that the stations appearance be rather grand

    • @ParkinsonsWalks
      @ParkinsonsWalks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike, I think it started out as rather grand Railway Hotel. They certainly took care of their guests. Lady Foley was very influential in the area, she had her own waiting room at the station in what is now the cafe. Ron
