Lesson learned here. The player should be in charge and involved in negotiations that effect his life. Not delegating these issues to an agent. Remember, the agent takes a cut of the contract. The cut was bigger from the LA deal and that’s what was driving the agent.

I've never seen a pro player so emotionally broken from changing teams. Plus he got a bad contract. He does have good friends on the Dodgers, and has more money than he can spend in a lifetime. He'll be ok.

Chipper Jones was accurate when he went on a radio show in March. The agents are supposed to do what the player wants - not the other way around. 10 years from now Freeman won't be upset that the move meant his career earnings were $320M vs $335M, because he won't spend it all anyways.
But, he clearly has some regret letting his agents wag the dog, or try to, and it not working out the way he'd hoped. I think the Braves are happy to have Olson, because he's been really good for them, and long-term it allows them to fill a need later. Considering how well Freeman has been hitting the last 10 games, it sure hasn't hampered his on field performance. But, I do see the possibility of Freeman going back to Atlanta once his Dodgers contract is done to finish out the last 2-3 years of his career.

@@BeefPapa so, you're guaranteeing that at 38 years old Freeman won't be able to find a team to sign him to a 2 year contract to split time at DH and 1B, for his age 38 and 39 seasons?
He is going to age much better than Cabrera and Pujols. Or even Nelson Cruz who is still hitting at 40.
This isn't saying he's going to make $27M a year when he does reach that age. But, I doubt he'll be "done" at the end of his 6 yr deal with the Dodgers

As a Dodgers fan, I love Freddie Freeman when he was an Atlanta Braves legend. To me, some one fucked up,the Braves, the agent,or Freeman himself. This guy should have been a Braves player for life, gonna into the Hall of Fame as a Braves player. It clearly showed this past weekend he didn't want to leave the ATL. I'm not mad at him. I am glad he is in a Dodgers uniform, this guy can flat out hit! One hell of a player! All these emotions will pass as time goes on. Definitely a class act, glad he's here. Agents keep telling players that they have to get the most money they can. Forget about their happiness or their family's well-being. The agents say that every future player will benefit if you get more money right now. The agents also conveniently omit the fact that the agent's compensation is a percentage of the player's contract.
Before Jered Weaver signed his last Angels contract (a mid-season extension), he told his agent Scott Boras to "get me the best deal you can get with the Angels" because he enjoyed playing for the Angels and his family enjoyed living in SoCal. Boras was not pleased, but Angels fans gave Weaver a standiing ovation before his next start.

If you're worried about being 2nd fiddle, I got news for you, Freddie made it clear all along he wanted to be a Brave, you're going to be 2nd fiddle, you think when Freeman goes into the hall, he's going in as a Dodger? They need to grow up, accept he'd rather be with the Braves, he loves the city, the fans, but he's yours now and he's a great player enjoy him while he's raking and don't worry about him wearing the Braves jersey underneath his Dodgers jersey like Bobby Rayburn.

For those missing the recent context: it has since come out (no idea if it's true, but Freddie Freeman doesn't seem like the kind of guy to lie about this) that apparently Freddie's agent did *not* tell him about the Braves final offer during free agency, an offer it seems like he would've taken. He only found this out on this most recent roadtrip while visiting the Braves, implying someone in management told him of the offer and he wasn't aware of it until now. If this is true, man oh man is this a juicy story. No longer a story of regret on Freeman's part, but a story of lies and betrayal. Sounds like the makings of a great 30 for 30.

The Dodgers wanted him, the Dodger fans wanted him and quite honestly Freddie wanted a change. I get it. I've been there. It doesn't matter if the Dodger fans show up late and leave early to games. Freddie wanted that extra year in his contract and he got it with the Dodgers. He'll be a big part of the Dodger success this year, amongst other players and it'll all be forgotten, trust me. So what if Freddie has a tender heart. A lot of people do and crying can be a result of that. I'm excited to see just how far the Dodgers go this year. Watch with me and be amazed!!!

Here's why I believe the Gottlieb story - IF there was no final offer and the Braves were happy to move on from Freddie and get a younger 1B, nobody in the organization has any reason to discredit Casey Close or to engage Freddie about what happened since they got everything they wanted and the uproar about his departure had died down to a simmer. But if there was an offer and they expected Freddie to take it, that's why someone from the organization asked him about it when the Dodgers were in town, because everyone remained baffled as to why he didn't take it.
My hunch is that his agency had marketing opportunities they figured would be much more lucrative for Freddie (and by extension them) as a Dodger than as a Brave; they knew he'd take the final offer that has been at the center of the discussion, so they figured they were doing the best thing for him by not telling him and they were rolling the dice that he'd be so happy once he was out of Atlanta (overestimating his desire to get back to the west coast) that it would never be an issue and they were going to dazzle him with endorsements. I also think this matches Freddie's experience during negotiation, i.e. that they'd been hard-selling LA since the end of the Series. Freddie talked to somebody in the organization, added it to his experience and determined he'd been pushed out of the place he wanted to stay despite getting the offer he wanted.

He'd have rather stayed where the fandom would love him to his baseball grave. And his loss is final, because the Braves did what the Braves do and found a way with 100 million less on a payroll...

These players need to be more involved in what their agent is doing. Boros is a well known jerk and thought he could put a gun in the back of the Braves and fatten his wallet. Why? Because after the WS win everyone was saying that the Braves HAD to keep Freeman. How could they let "the face of the franchise" go after the WS? So Boros gave the Braves a ridiculous number and a deadline/ultimatum. The Braves did what any good management team would do, they said fine, we'll find someone else and Anthopolos did a great job of that with hometown kid Olsen.
Freeman via Boros really blew this big time and it showed that he knew it in his interview (and when he finally fired that tool). He left for really no more money than the Braves left on the table, but more importantly (and why he is crying), he could have finished his career in ATL and been on the same pedestal in ATL as Dale Murphy and Chipper Jones. He would have "owned" ATL had he stayed. He would have been a "forever" idol in ATL. Now ATL fans will view him as just another money grubbing jerk, he's no longer an idol in ATL, and will NEVER be an idol in LA. He's just another great player on a team FILLED with hired guns. If his production ever falls off they will toss him to the curb. That never would have happened had he stayed in ATL. So he essentially went from "hero" to "zero".

Sometimes happiness is absolutely worth sacrificing for a few more $$$$. He was gonna be filthy rich either way, he knows he blew it by holding out for too much $$ in Atlanta. Matt Olsen is super happy he held out since the Braves signed him instead. I don't think the Braves have missed Freeman at all.

  • @uberhandle42

It's just a communication breakdown....X 320 million. I understand the other, very intriguing side of it here - that being that Freddie fired his agent because he failed to notify FF of the Braves final offer; thus leading him to believe that they weren't really interested in him...Thus he signs for $335m in LA rather than the $320m in Atlanta.
So, if it was the agent steering the ship here, then what was his incentive for going after the LA deal? Sure, it is a bit more money (for Freddie), but was it really worth the agent doing something as unethical and dishonest as deceiving Freeman by hiding the ATL final offer? I love FF, but I have a hard time believing it...Unless there is some kind of incentive or bonus driving the agent to shut the door on ATL for freddie.

Dan, first I must say I love you since your days here in Atlanta at 96 Rock. My brother and I would always catch you daily on our way to the golf course where we worked and played. It seems you've missed the crux of the story which is Freddy's agent did not represent him with Freddy's interest in mind. He did not communicate Atlanta's last offer to Friday which was less than LA's. The agent also issued a 1 hour ultimatum to the Braves. After the hour past the deals were taken off the table. The Braves made their move to replace Freddy and Freddy signed with the Dodgers for a higher amount of money but with deferred payments which would be eaten alive by taxes and Freddy would ultimately end up making less with the Dodgers then he would have with the Braves. Apparently the agent did not communicate this to Freddy because the agent cut comes off the top, would make more money signing with the Dodgers then had Freddie signed with the Braves. And that is why Freddy fired his agent, after hearing it from someone in the Braves organization.

I think you hit the nail on the head.....I think Freeman's agent was sugar coating some stuff and glassed over some mistakes that his agent made at the time that maybe Freeman didnt know about until he came back from ATL... I think at the time Freeman was in shock and probably upset with ATL front office for moving on to Olson so he was closed minded. Time has passed, allowed him to open up and allowed him to hear the other side...I think he probably heard some things from his buddies in the ORG that ding that light bulb that helped him understand the other side of the story...I think until he came to ATL for this series he only knew what his agent was telling him....now he has had a sit down possibly some "over a beer" conversations it painted a much different picture.

Any commentary on him not being happy being a Dodger is commentary. Freddie hasn't said he's unhappy being a Dodger. You can loss something valuable without being unhappy with what you have. I think, if he wasn't a Brave, the next best thing for him was a Dodger, but the cost is steep. Retired faces of franchises have wonderful post-baseball lives in the cities that love them. Hell Freddie could have been Governor regardless of the party he ran as. But that is all gone now. He'll be loved, he'll be appreciated, but he won't retire as the face of this franchise. And no money can buy it. The sad thing is, he already had it, so it was taken from him. Be careful people, with whom you surround yourself with. It cost Freddie a portion of his legacy.
