      There’s a reason why agents take about 10% off the top. I lasted a whole 30 seconds in this video before I realized this, the 10% doesn’t cover just the administration fees and such that comes with contracts whether they be from a club or endorsements. Every once in a while an agent has to step up and take the blame so the player can still look good and for that the player is going to have to pay about 10%.
      That’s all that happened with both Freddie and yes Dansby. You are correct if they wanted to stay they would’ve.

    • @DisAccountizaMiracle

      I pose less blame for Dansby. 5yr 100MM Braves vs 7yr 177MM in his wife’s pro sports town.
      Also I think part of what the agent may not have told Freeman is the contract is deferred until 2040 so it’s mathematically worth less than the Braves 5yr 140MM

    The biggest tragedy of this process was a footnote in this video; how the Rays were played and led on. The Rays matched the Dodgers offer and did not pursue any other first basemen that year which is curious for the often savvy Rays front office. The legit and serious pursuit of Freeman was met with mockery and the aftermath has been heart wrenching, in terms of baseball things.
    Not the first time the Rays have gone in for free agents as seen in the past with Matt Wieters (signed with Nats), Nelson Cruz (signed with Twins), and Craig Kimbrell (who signed with the Cubs). The pursuits are often ignored and the cherished narrative of the Rays being cheap continued to be spewed.
    The Rays had to go with Choi as the primary first basemen last year and the holes in both offense and defense were felt. The Rays were quite in their playoff series against Cleveland and failed to match the mere three runs that the Guardians scored against them in the two games.
    If the Rays were a bigger market or even a mid market, this would have been a story. However, because the narrative is easy to say the Rays don’t have fans and don’t spend money, their pursuits of Freeman are ignored or treated a footnote as seen in this video.

    • @magicoddeffect
      @magicoddeffect ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It seems like big-market free agents by and large don't want to play for the Rays. Having a terrible old stadium in a bad location with bad home attendance is probably a big factor despite the Rays being competitive almost every year.

    • @romanrodriguez4330
      @romanrodriguez4330 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@magicoddeffect In terms of your response, it a bit weak and generic.
      Have you personally been to the Trop? If so, why do you “feel” the stadium is so bad?
      The regular season attendance is near the bottom since 2009, but that argument is quickly quieted in the playoffs.
      How does your response relate to my above comment? Are you implying that Freeman would never sign with the Rays because the stadium and the fans? Why string the Rays along then? If that is your point, that the Rays never had a chance than you merely proved my point that the Rays were the real losers because they were lead on.

    • @nathanrasely7903
      @nathanrasely7903 ปีที่แล้ว

      The “narrative” Tampa doesn’t have fans or spend money? Please direct everyone to the line of big time contracts handed out by the Rays. And no one ever said Tampa “doesn’t have fans” But it’s probably not the best look for a team who’s continually in the mix to playing in front of a half empty dome year in and year out…unless that’s all just photoshopped and the “Trop” is packed out on a nightly basis. Way to show up in the playoffs to support your hometown team though, and try to use that to justify it being a ghost town throughout the reg season…Just keep on boo hoo’ing and not supporting the team with half empty stadiums while the actual team is putting up ridiculous numbers and gets off to a shit hot start…Something seemingly every other city and fan base would kill for, but y’all just wait for the playoffs to make that number back up. Oh yeah, your sob story could’ve easily been shortened had you just remembered no one gives a shit about the Devil Rays or Rays or whatever your team playing in front of a half empty stadium calls itself now.

    Love the breakdown but hear me out. You left something extremely important at the end and what I hypothesize as the reason Freddie Fired his agent.
    The Braves last public offer was 5yr 140Mill paid in full by 2026.
    The Dodgers offer was 6yr 162Mill which looks solid on the surface but it has 57MM deferred meaning he won’t get paid in full until 2040. Usually the most basic of math in a capital Gains competition the Braves offer is worth more by 2040 even with super conservative investing strategies. So it’s one of 3 things.
    1) Freddie didn’t know the Dodgers offer was deferred for so long and realized the math later was WAY less.
    2) Braves offered another offer in which Freddie was not told by the Agency
    3) Or the hardball ultimatum wasn’t discovered until he went to Atlanta. Keeping in mind he didn’t even get Ultimatum money in the end. So the agent was playing with cards he didn’t have.

    • @wpbarchitect1800
      @wpbarchitect1800 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Taking so much deferred $ is IDIOTIC for a player, brilliant for teams and agents. That money will be decimated in purchasing power by inflation, which is and will be running at a real 5+% or more annual rate for decades to come, and the player is effectively giving the team an interest free loan, losing 30-50% of the money's value in just one decade. And the agent, of course, get his commission upon signing. These are really dumb deals for players to take, and if that wasn't disclosed, not only firing the guy was correct but that's a SERIOUS breech of fiduciary duty. I refuse to believe an agent would do that. Plus all players have lawyers too combing over every inch of these deals that would have informed him.

    I honestly blame both the agent and the Braves organization, and partly Freddie (he was just too trusting). I’m not faulting Freddie, or saying he’s a bad person, he grew up in LA, so it makes sense if he wanted to play there. But, most likely, I think he just put WAYYY too much trust in his agent, agents are post to have YOUR best interests, but unfortunately most agents are just looking for the biggest cash grab. I don’t think he fully comprehended that. He might have also wanted more years w the Braves, bc he did clearly love that team, and maybe wanted the most out of it considering he probably will retire sooner than later. I’m not him, so ofc I’ll never know what his decision truly was, and why. But, I think he was just be too naive and trusting. Also, it is also def the Braves fault bc w out really even talking to Freddie, decided to already trade him, so before he even decided he was already removed form the team. It’s also his agents fault, bc no agent should hide info like that, he KNEW Freddie would accept the final offer. Smh 🤦‍♀️ that agent shouldn’t be an agent and I love Matt Olson, but he can’t replace Freddie and the kind of leader he was! Braves should’ve realized that, and Freddie, I’m sorry you had to learn the hard way, I’ve been there, and it sucks, wish he, at least learned sooner, since he might retire soon. Also the agent and the company should be ashamed of themselves!

    Whoa! ...wait a minute here... Let me first say that I was and still am a big fan of Freddie Freeman. You mentioned that, in an interview (680 the Fan) Chipper Jones told us how he warned Freddie that he is playing a very dangerous game. What you left out of that very same interview is how Chipper Jones explained how involved he is with his agent at negotiation time. Chipper Jones: "Let me remind some young baseball players of something and it's a rule that I've lived by... since early on in my career: When you hire representation, remember one thing, they work for you, it's not the other way around, okay? ...And... I feel like that is very pertinent in this situation." So chipper is saying albeit very politely, that at the end of the day, it was Freddie's fault that he's a Dodger. Freddie is a very nice, standup guy, but that doesn't mean everyone else around him is.
    This is business and unfortunately at the end of the day, an agent in an agency only has one thing on their mind: Getting his player signed at the highest rate the agent can get because it's a feather in the agent and the agency's cap -- not the talent he's representing. That's the cold hard truth here folks. This may have been a very tough lesson for Freeman to have learned in such a very public forum but I'm sorry, at the end of the day, that he's a Dodger is his own fault. So, I think I would have titled this video: "How Freddie Freeman Took His Eye off the Ball and Became an L.A. Dodger".
    In retrospect, it was a horrible deal where he could lose up to $57M if the Dodgers decided to cut him at any point during that contract. Five for $135 M in Atlanta without any clauses for losing a penny is a much better deal compared to the high taxation he'll face in the state of CA.

Those contracts with the Braves were not that great and it is clear the Braves want to sign productive talent on the cheap if they can be. Freddie could hit more homers (he hit 38 one year with Atlanta) but that's not his game. Dodger fans shouldn't want that. Freeman hits situationally. If a single wins the game, he hits the single. He's also shift-proof. I'm sure Dodger's fans have realized by now that every single time Freeman gets shifted he just takes the ball the other way. In Freeman's view, if you shift him you are just giving him a free hit and he will take it every time. I can't tell you how many times I watched teams get burned for shifting Freeman. Freeman's bat is basically a better version of Trea Turner but Freeman has the ability to hit for more power on top of that. I appreciate this video because it is obvious Freeman's agents wanted to direct him to LA for their own purposes. I didn't even realize that his agents get a portion of his endorsement money and that says it all right there. Freeman was going to get more endorsements in LA and his agents wanted that money. If I were an athlete I would hire an agent but more as a consultant. I would want to be in the room during all negotiations. No way I'm letting someone else negotiate behind my back who can make themselves more money if they do what I don't want them to do. When an agent gets endorsement money that's a clear conflict of interest IMO and I would have to be in the room whenever they negotiate. The smart move is never give any agent endorsement money.

      @@madduxno331 Very true. Also referencing the first comment about Freeman having "maybe one slump" per season is about right. He's not only shift proof but he's as close to slump proof as you can get. The guy adjusts at the plate better than Pujols did in his prime and that's saying a lot. Freeman's slumps usually go like this:
      Step 1) Freeman has been great at the plate all season.
      Step 2) He might not have a great stretch at the plate for a week or so.
      Step 3) Fans start to say "you know what? Freeman's in kind of a mini slump. He hasn't been himself for almost 2 weeks!"
      Step 4) Freddie realized before the fans did and by the time anyone says it the mini-slump is over and he's hitting for the cycle to start off a great stretch.
      Step 5) His fans realize that is the only "slump" he will have all season and the MVP conversations start back up.
