    These 4 double decker power cars presented radical engineering changes and challenges and all 4 were experimental models using different electrical systems from 4 different suppliers for evaluation and possible tender. We have the S Sets, and all that has come since to Sydney's double deck electric passenger fleet, to thank for these models. We should also thank the engineers who designed them and those who built them. If all that's a "rail fail" then so be it. Great archival footage. Thanks.

      I think the fail part comes in 1972 when S10 started to have regular failures by the end of S10 it looked more like a W set with single deck motors replacing the tullochs because of their constant failures

    The moral of the story is:
    Always use electrical equipment from one company.

      Random V Set duh come on state rail (that was back in the day before cityrail and Sydney trains) use your common sense and stick to one company

      @Random V Set yes that’s tru. The power cars should have had power supply gear from only 1x industrial company. If that happened they could have survived and lived in into the New millennium

      @@oscarstill909 the point of S10 was to test the different equipment and running gear for the new S set contract there was a plan to convert all four cars to Mitsubishi equipment to run with S sets but a dispute put that to bed pretty quick instead two were converted to 32 volt trailers 3802s conversion was started but never finished and 3804 was plinthed at elcar as a rolling shell

      S10 was a testbed for the S set contract C3801 was the most problematic car and the first to be removed from S10 the rest were pretty reliable until towards the end they started to fail pretty regularly the last S10 motor car in service was C3802 with its trailer in set W16

    Well I wonder where they got the inspiration from.

    If you want a true "rail fail" look up the original 1970 MK1 blue goose cars they were built as prototypes to future batches of DDIU cars (V sets) they were semi permanently coupled in pairs with the two cars shearing equipment because there was no room in just one car for air-conditioning and running gear the problem was the jumper cables between the two cars couldn't handle the load placed on them and neither could the motor alternators on many occasions If the aircon and motors were at full power the train would stall that's what caused the 1978 glenbrook disaster the blue goose set failed and was rear ended by a freight train DCF8004 was crumpled it ended up rolling down the cliff in pieces all 15 remaining blue goose cars were eventually converted to V set trailers and because of rusted mild steel underframes they were all retired by 2005 and 14 were scrapped in 2007 DMT9204 survived till 2009 when it was blown up during army training

    Pity there's so little footage here of the power cars themselves - in fact there is probably more of old single-deckers

    C3801 OOOOOOOO 3801 IN THE OLD C SET LIV

    • @ducky_the_helper
      @ducky_the_helper ปีที่แล้ว

      C3801 never made it into the "old C set liv" it was withdrawn in about 1972 repainted into PTC in 1974~ it was then rebuilt into a 32 volt trailer to run with S sets in 1981
