If Stephen Fry was the barman, I'd go to that pub every single weekend.
I'd go every day if my wallet allowed for it.
I would not drink somewhere where the barman handles the ice with his fingers.
@Rick O'Shay Well, if you tell him "Keep it coming" first - who knows.
sure thing i would do the same and i dont even drink!!!!!
and every monday morning you would be walking like john wayne.
"I mean frankly, she's-"
"Plain, and prawn-flavoured."
Stephen's timing is brilliant.
Well, that is the joke..
I don't think thats what people mean when they say "comedic timing"
It really is. That kind of timing and spot on tone throughout the whole sketch...
Not to burst your bubble, but I heard John Cleese say they spent an hour editing each minute of Fawlty Towers. I rather imagine this is the same, as one has to take longer pauses for a live audience than works on TV. Just saying...
I suppose... It's built into the sketch though; it's not exactly on the spot comedic timing. It's a rehearsed piece 🤷♂️
Love it. 'A rather disgusting looking tart that should have been disposed of ages ago' is one of those all time great sentences 😂😂
"Why in the blazes would you hang on to that?!"
"Yeah, you're the one to talk..."
Disposed of ages ago
I thought the whole sketch was hilarious, but this one life went over the top.
He didn't sell that tart well..
So great you forgot it
"Savoury finger?" gets me every time. I loved this show as a kid
How long did they have to rehearse that before they stopped cracking each other up?1? I'm gasping!!!
This reminds so much of Austin Powers.
That’s why there is a cut after each comment from Fry lol
When Fry said 'peanuts?', Laurie was close to cracking up
"Good, juicy tongue in the back passage." XD
Is there e non-sexual meaning to that sentence? Because if there is, I can't think of it.
That one definitely doesn't work as well as the others. Passage can indeed mean a sort of corridor, but the tongue is a bit unfeasible for the scene.
@@Kraftwerker1 i believe the joke is that it gets more absurd as it goes. E.g. another disgusting old tart that should've been disposed of ages ago
Jackson Percy you can have tongue (of cow, etc) as a snack or sandwich filler
@@Kraftwerker1 cow tongue is a (rather old-fashioned) snack. He basically meant "I've got some tasty cow tongue hung up (drying/curing) in the corridor at the back of the bar."
This was performed at a sixth form talent show at my school. There was an emergency meeting in the staff room next morning.
What happened?
@@ackeeble There were no further talent shows.
Was it because they fell about laughing too hard or they found it offensive?
@@ackeeble The latter, but they didn't like us enjoying ourselves too much.
😂😂😂 I would have liked to be a fly on the wall in that school meeting
Fry is obviously the lead in this sketch but Laurie's contribution is so underrated. To be able to deliver his lines with the frustrated tone and perfect timing while not getting affected by Fry's punches deserves something! I know they are professional actors and trained for all this but still it is not as easy as he makes it look!
I still maintain this sketch to be classic British comedy at its finest :)
JDLupus
Actually I thought this was a quite poor, lowest common denominator, cheap laughs, smutty 2 Ronnies type sketch. They are capable of much better stuff. But each to his own, I guess.
As has been said, this is immediately apparent as a ripoff of at least two Two Ronnies sketches - the Your Nuts m'Lord sketch and the in the pub sketch where Ronnie Barker keeps finishing Ronnie Corbett's sentences. Fry and Laurie are very talented nonetheless.
@@foddyfoddy UP YOURS
Philip Croft
A fine, intellectually well-argued (and capitalised) response.
@@foddyfoddy u dman what m8 ill sort u out ok
"polish or something, is she?"
haha, i love fry and laurie
I'm 11 years late- oh wait if i discovered this as a child...---
nothing like a bit of fry and laurie to cheer you up when you're having a bad day. this makes me laugh every time!
"She laughs at my -"
"Peanuts?" xD I love these guys!
Do you still love them 10 years on ?
Hugh Luarie is so incredibly talented, I can't believe how well he does this sketch. Man, speechless.
Anas Al-ameen i miss House 😩
My eye is swollen and read the title as "Understanding Batman". Not disappointed, nevertheless.
truebluekit - haha... funny. Hope your eye is better...
I misread this comment as "Understanding Barman" and went back up to check that I had read the title correctly.
Yeah me too. I expected Hugh as Batman and Stephen as Alfred.
Only Joker truly understands Batman...

Let's just take a moment to appreciate the English language for making this many tasty innuendo's.
I die every time Fry talks about the juicy tongue in the back passage.
That shit kills me.
At first I thought "ok, the 2 Ronnies have been here", but to be honest, the punchlines go further, and dare I say it funnier than the 2 ronnies would have (due to their family audience). And even though I've never agreed that Taboo necessarily means funny, the line about how the best Hugh can hope for is a "savoury finger" is just brilliant.
Comedy this well executed makes me proud to be English
ah, but you're just faking being American.
3110loopylou this indeed is masterclass
But not for the last 20 years. No good comedy or music comes from these shores anymore. It's all gone-goodbye.
@@salvadormarleywhat absolute twaddle
Why? It's nothing to do with you how funny Fry and Laurie are, just because you were born on the same approximate lump of land they were. Doesn't mean you're clever or funny. Where's the pride in that? You were born in the same political division as Fred and Rose West, does their skill at getting away with horrific sex murders make you ashamed of yourself? Does Harold Shipman bumping off dozens of grannies mean you ought to do a month or two in prison for murder by association?
Good god how many free sides do you get at this bar!
Nobody said they were free....
It's a generous spread, I grant you.
If all those sides are free that drink probably cost like $50.
@@JustaGuy_Gaming That is his seventh.....so even a cheap one is probably adding up.
"Plain and prawn flavoured" I'm going to use that from now on
that is some hard ribena
Must be, since it is on the rocks.
Like the marriage.
This is Timing 101. This is what they should play in class to teach about timing in acting.
They taught it when I studied acting. I missed most of the class though, because I was late.
@@crimsondragoncj5467 That’s some pretty bad timing then isn’t it.
@@crimsondragoncj5467 Not as late as you were to this comment thread.
@@bourbon2242 You did it. You saw the joke. And then you stated it outright.
@@Mythraen This was 10 months ago. I don’t even remember writing the comment.
That's a very generous and well-stocked barman...
"She laughs at my..." "peanuts?"
I love Stephen Fry : )
Their timing was superb. Beautiful work from two great actors.
I love Hugh's bright pink satin tie (not to mention Stephen's sweater). I think that pretty much says it all.
This is a sketch I come back to over and over again. One of the funniest ever made by any comedians ever. The last line 😂
this sketch should be shown in drama classes world wide in a lesson of perfect comic timing.
That's his seventh and he still has to be asked if he has it with ice.
What's great about this sketch is the wordplay, the innuendo, the double entendres. Great comedy is timeless and doesn't have to rely on pop culture references to make a joke relevant.
All the innuendos are fantastic
Oh gosh, this is wonderful!
I'm brazilian and my english isn't very good, but I'm completely obsessed with A bit of Fry and Laurie and the british humor, I watch at least a sketch every day since I found a video of them *--*
I learnt my english with ahows like these.
Omg! Me too. I'm Peruvian and Graham Norton was my first bite of British comedy and here I am. This duo is the best 🔥❤️
Why are there 91 dislikes? This is sketch is pure gold!
Cause part of the sketch is missing.
I love the witty humor.
How could anyone dislike this?
literally taking the words of his mouth ,brilliant and funny.
I love how the drink is blackcurrant ribena :)
Jon Taylor Yeah, that's the joke Jon.
howdj sorry for the question, but whats rhe joke wit the drink? not familiar
Its just a child's cordial, dilute to taste.
ajivins1 and how exactly are fruit cordials "child's" ? No age related harm is done by liking them at any age, and a lot of pointless emotional harm is done by having conformist values that kids should like this and adults should like that.
Hah!
The writing is fabulous!
There’s just something about Jim Carrey and Hugh Laurie that allows them to be effortlessly comedic. The former is smiling while the other is frowning.
This is one of those all time greatest sketches, superb comic timing 👌
God, I can't even keep a straight face! British humor is so awesome!
I'd have to rate this one up there with the 2 Therapists sketch with Stephen and Hugh! 2 thumbs up!!!
god i think i almost passed out i laffed so hard :D
id forgotten how brilliant these two are together
a bit of fry and laurie is the best sketch show ever!!!
A seemingly simple and obvious sketch, performed and delivered beautifully. So funny. Well done chaps!
I come back to this every few years when I remember, and it always makes me laugh.
clever humor is so rare these days...
i love finding gems like this.
The more I watch this the more I become aware that it is a complete masterpiece.
this is CLASS COMEDY
A generation of comedians that wont ever be replaced.
Reminds me why I love British comedy.
I still can't think of Dr. House and Hugh Laurie as a comedian as one... it still blows my mind to this day.
Every time Steven Fry says something it just cracks me up!!!
I know this is a small thing but Hugh Laurie does a great job at playing drunk and not all actors do. Idk props to him lol
Dude... Stephen Fry and "House!" lol Sweet!
There are no words left to express admiration for these guys☺
Best barman ever.
A very understanding barman!
It was the "chocolate hobnob" that made me lose it.
I also like how this is supposedly the 7th drink Fry is pouring and asks whether Laurie likes it with or without ice
maybe he changed after each drink, eg first one with, second without etc.
This cracked me up; I couldn't stop laughing for ages.
I love how this is so tongue and cheek clean, but vulgar at the same time. Pure brilliance, this has to be one of my favorite sketches of theirs.
Most accommodating barman ever
Damn... rewatching this and blackadder after House MD... you'd almost think they were different actors. Just shows how great Hugh Laurie is as an actor.
One of my absolute favourites! Bravo, Fry and Laurie!
I also really enjoy Armstrong and Miller, especially their RAF skits.
Ronnie Barker-esque, so therefore brilliant.
zenzombie72
Your nuts m'lord
Clearly a homage
Tears of joy watching this! Perfection!
i can never pick my favorite fry and laurie sketch! but this one so so far up the list!
if I watch it one more time I will die of laughter XD
It’s the fact he’s served the guy Ribena that always gets me.
The best Fry and Laurie sketch ever created.
I have really gotten into these two guys now .. they are Great together !
They seem to have very fun themselves. Especially Fry. Trying not to giggle. I love it!
The level of British comedy outstanding...
Their timing is so perfect!
That was awesome! I dont know how Hugh kept a straight face, i would have been cracking up!
This never gets old.
So class XD
You can tell he's not even drinking the juice. The end ones for so funny
i been back to this so many times. i cant believe its not got a million or 2 views yet?
A masterclass in comedy timing!
I LOVE Fry & Laurie. They don't make 'em like this anymore!
hahah yeah..i have seen stephen trying not to laugh on a few of these sketches, but that just makes it even MORE funny!!!!
If Hugh Laurie was at that bar, I'd get a job there as the bartender...just to hear his conversations. ❤❤❤❤
"plain and prawn flavoured" made my day
Props to Hugh for keeping the character & straight face throughout. I was literally howling still on 4th view!
It's genius, best comedy piece I've seen for about ten minutes, that was Fry and Laurie too though.
Oh shit! I haven't laughed this hard in years 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love this! I watched it for a dozen of times now and it still makes me laugh! XD
great tribute to The Two Ronnies - nice one.
Always loved Fry & Laurie. Brilliant timing.
One of my favorite sketches ever.
1:51 - Clearly he never learned how to defend himself against a man wielding a banana.
👏👏 good reference
Katherine Broderick first you shoot the assailant wielding the banana, then you eat the banana!
Sadly, she can't hear you Willam. That was 7 years ago, mein freund...
What about pineapples?
Their is a crash course on YT about how to defend yourselves against a man with a banana. MPFC and hilarious. 😉
Laurie is so brilliant as house and every other character he plays
I love these two
Oh my God, this is absolutely fall-over hilarious! How is there over thirty people who've disliked this?
Haha, the Fry and Laurie style is to pack on loads and loads of quick-fire punchlines throughout their sketches. And normally this makes a lot of their sketches peter out and the final punchline is not as funny as the rest of the sketch (they have acknowledged this themselves by making a lot of remarks about punchlines in their sketches.
But this one built up the same way and really dilevered a great final punchline too. Brilliant!
"Good juicy tongue in the back passage..." - brilliant.
I can kind of remember the same feeling from when I was a kid. We used to go to my uncles on boxing day and we had tongue, ham and turkey. Good to eat though. He was great, he used to slip me a beer when my parents weren't looking.
so happy that youtube has put a full advert video ahead of this good show...:)
This bar has ALL the snacks!😋
