Learning to Rollerblade; Challenging my Fears - Life in Singapore

  • Feeling vulnerable sharing my fears and insecurities. But this process is necessary if I want to face up to these self-limiting factors. REMINDER TO SELF: Courage does not mean that you do not feel fear, but it is the act of choosing to manage that fear, and then taking actions/steps to overcome the fear.
    Rollerblading - this is undeniably one "land" sport which I'm kinda bad at. Since I bought my inline skates in late-2021, I've been in them for less than 10 times; each practice session spanning approx. 1 hour or so.
    I'm still struggling mentally and physically while picking up this sport through the help of TH-cam tutorials. Do you have any tips to share? Lmk in the comment section below!

    I too just started rollerblading. As for falling, Ricardo Lino has a video that shows how to fall and not get hurt. Also Asha Kirby has a video on doing curbs that I thought was really helpful. I think you are doing a good job. But, like me can do with more practice. Have fun and go slow until you feel more at ease skating.

    Dont be discourage, for a beginner you are quite good. Just remember every skater beginning same like yours, full of fear and doubts but once you get comfortable with your skates… everything will come easy. Keep practicing is the key

    Wear all your protectors including padded shorts & never fear falling. Expecr to fall a lot during beginner stage. Falling gives you more confidence. Take it as you are going judo practice a lot of falling also learn to breakfall to reduce your fall impact. Gradually you will maintain your balance & less falling. Joining a school better gives you encouragement. Tell yourself more falling more confidence & improving your skills. Same as how those kids learn falling a norm. Get used to it.

    That's pretty good for the first 2 days! Better than I was :D How's the practice been going? I hope you haven't quit!
    As for falling I believe it's actually what improves the rate of our progress the most in the beginning. We make all sorts of weird moves and stay reserved and stiff on skates because we're afraid to fall, but once it happens a few times (just make sure you learn to fall forward/to the side!) we begin to realize that it's not really a big deal. All our skating improves as a result and learning new things, going faster/stopping, etc. just becomes easier to practice.

    • @oheyjelly
      @oheyjelly  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello there! No, I haven't quit, but I'm still guilty of not finding the time to practice 😅. Been so busy at work and finding it difficult to balance and prioritise my time.
      Thanks for sharing that insight! ☺It's very reassuring and makes a ton of sense. I guess I'll need to work on overcoming my fear of falling, then I'll be able to see improvements...Hopefully I can update with a new rollerblading vlog soon. 😝

    I also started skating fairly recently. I think I fall 1 out of 2 times I go out,it's never fun feeling but I just laugh and enjoy the break on the floor. I can't wait till I lose that uneasy feeling of being on inline skates.

    • @oheyjelly
      @oheyjelly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally get what you mean. 😄You're right, but I guess I gotta at least learn to fall safely on the ground and not end up injuring myself too badly. you choose a nice hobby! I've been skating for quite sometimes now switching between speed skate and fitness skate. From your video, I can suggest that once you get comfortable on the shoes itself, the first thing to fix is the pronation. Pronation will form a bad skating habit in the long run. Keep it up and have fun!

    • @oheyjelly
      @oheyjelly  ปีที่แล้ว

    • @kuancelee7036
      @kuancelee7036 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@oheyjelly if you still struggling on the pronation. It might be the frame of your skate. You can try to skate with one leg. If you can't go straight line with one leg then it's the frame. When you buy your skate it usually comes with an Allan key for you to adjust. Spend some skate session to adjust until you feel best. Worth it for the long run

    I used to rollerblade when I was younger right into my adult years. Now 38 years old and not rollerblading for about 5 or 6 years. I literally have to relearn how to rollerblade. I practice everyday for about 5 to 10 minutes just to get that rhythm again

      @oheyjelly rollerblading on the road is less intimidating than practicing on bricks. Bricks are sometimes uneven and slippery. The area I live in now is a complex area. The road in the complex area is a little steep and curves a lot. So practicing going down slowly

    • @oheyjelly
      @oheyjelly  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes! Roads are way smoother than bricks floors. Slopes and curves still freak me out when I'm on rollerblades....I panic and get overwhelmed with fear that I'll fall/crash. 😮‍💨@@erinkemp1004

      @oheyjelly what I do is say to myself relax. If you starting to fear rollerblading and falling just tell yourself to relax. There's a saying I fear nothing but fear itself

    • @erinkemp1004
      @erinkemp1004 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @oheyjelly I thought of something that can help you overcome that fear. Start halfway down a curve road that's slightly steep that you don't go full speed. Practice just letting your rollerblades glide down. Practice it a few times. Once you feel a little comfortable work your way up little by little and overtime it won't be as scary. It's what I'm doing while practicing turning by making u shape to rollerblade up
