    I work for Amazon. I mostly pack. I have a very small ipod that I listen to every day. Take an old pair of ear buds and cut one of them off. Then string it up under your shirt to your ear. Having longer hair helps cover the wire. We go thru a metal detector at the end of shift. I bought one of those Coke cans that you can unscrew the top and I just put the ipod in there when I leave. I put the Coke can in my lunch box and security just thinks its a regular Coke.

      I wouldn't wear both airpods because if someone starts talking to you you might have to take one out to be able to carry on a conversation. Definitely get one of those fake soda cans so you can get it out past the metal detectors and security. I ordered mine from Amazon.

      Yep, I got an Ipod shuffle from Amazon. Very small and I just clip in on a belt loop. It really helps me stay sane during those 10 hour shifts.

      Dude, I’m like 99% sure any headphones are an OSHA violation. If you get busted you’ll be fired and the company could be fined. If you got hurt they might try to claim you were at fault for being distracted and avoid an insurance claim. It would be a huge mess. Not worth the risk.
      The reason for banning headphones is 100% safety related. It isn’t to be a dick. There are huge forklifts and other machines bouncing all over that floor and you wouldn’t hear one, nor would they hear you, if headphones were allowed.

People can say they are introvert. But interaction and social is important. You can change your brain. Connection = more likely success in life, especially in this interconnected world.. So yeah, talk to people. It is not a bad experience.

      GamingTaylor I quit last month, I started in June. I liked the first building I was in, then we went to a bigger building, it got kinda boring. I did everything & I think we should’ve been getting paid more for that. In the first building I had to do stowing then routes 10:45pm- 6am have a 15 min break then for lunch clock out to have a 40 min break. In the new building it was only a 15 min break. It gets a lil tiring & boring for sure, they did mess up some of my paychecks. Also yes there are lots of lazy ass people that kiss the ambassadors asses ( the ones in the blue vest ) The things you are talking about are called jiffy, that you have to scan one by one 🤮 The only cool thing is that you don’t have to talk, the only reason I applied. I struggle with anxiety & im anti-social. OH & my supervisor was a douche soo

    • @CuteAnimeGirl
      @CuteAnimeGirl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Well if your job isn't collaborative, then yeah you won't. But most higher paid jobs have you socialize. I had company dinners and it was part of the job itself and also a company outing. Of course amazon doesn't because it's a labor job and they just need someone to be the robot until they will be replaced with an actual robot later on. Robots don't talk, they only work. But socializing is part of being human, and working at Amazon is basically dehumanizing yourself to earn a paycheck. That's why I quit.

      Personally I'v done both for several years, I can say they When I was working at the call center I was wishing I was in a warehouse doing physical labor after and not have to deal with dumbass customers. Then after working in the warehouse for 2 years I was like sitting down in front of a computer getting yelled at didn't seem so bad. In conclusion they both have their draw backs. But If there is anything I dreaded more it was working at the call center. So Yes I'd say in the end it is slightly better than being a CSR but not by much.

    I worked for Amazon for over 10 years. I worked as a temp for X-mas peak only for about 7 years for extra cash. It didn't take 7 years to be offered full-time, I just had a better job and didn't want full-time and worked only seasonal for extra cash. Another reason I only worked seasonal (X-mas), is like he said, it is soul crushing and physically exhausting during "peak" (x-mas). During peak, 60 to 72 hours weeks are normal. I could only take it for a couple of months. But, it used to be a better place to work in the early days. They just don't give a shit about their employees anymore. He is right, stow (or stocking items) is easy (one of my many jobs there). But other positions are much harder than stow. BTW, you don't get to pick, it is luck of the draw to get something easy like stow or gift-rap (depends where they need people). Picking can be hard. Especially when it is slow. When it is slow? That doesn't make sense. Yeah, I said when it is slow. That is when you have to walk for miles all over the warehouse. When it is slower, the orders are more random all over the building. Stow you stay pretty much in one isle like he said. No matter how busy it is. Stowing is not dependent on incoming orders. You may work 10 to 12 hours, 6 days a week, during peak. This all brings back bad memories....lol.

      I may be wrong but, apparently having music played in the production floor is not allowed per "Amazon Safety Standard", despite that though my local FC's inbound and outbound department leaders occasionally blast their spotify playlist through their computer loudspeaker at random days and times aimed towards workers and may last anywhere between minutes to hours. Workers tend to generally enjoy it and asks on the voice of associates board for music to be put on more often, nothing is seemingly ever done about that specific feedback though.

    I work at Amazon warehouse. I admit that $15 an hour for part-time work is really good. But it's immensely stressful. You're on your feet for pretty much the entire shift. The only ones who are allowed to sit are the managers. You get two 15-minute breaks, and a single 30-minute break. But the problem is, the break room and restrooms are on the other side of the warehouse from where you work, so you use a little bit of rest time just going back and forth. I definitely wouldn't do this job full time. The pay is not worth the physical exhaustion.

    Omg I work fulfillment for Target and the conditions are practically heaven in comparison to your story! Granted, I am in a store and not a warehouse. I do picking/packing and typically get a good 8-12 miles of walking in during an 8 hour shift. We can listen to music with earbuds in the back and even on the floor if you’re sneaky and don’t get a complaint. Plus I get paid $15/hr, though I know that’s standard for Amazon workers now too. I always talk to my coworkers on the job and am only alone doing stuff for maybe half my shift, not 10 hours of being alone with no music. Godspeed to anyone who is working in a fulfillment center like Amazon, I know I’m a lot more thankful for my job after watching this

      Not true. In fact if you have any knowledge about Amazon's warehouses they actually staff more humans in the facilities that have robotics. Automation is only used to have better efficiency. So when they have automation they keep the same employees and just expand the volume at a given facility. Of course they're constantly growing so that doesn't stop the fact that they have to continuously expand as they become more automated. They also have plans to knock out more competition and this requires to constantly have a customer base. They're not stupid. Walmart's employees covers a decent portion of it's customer base. Amazon requires the same mentality if not an even stronger one in order to survive and surpass Walmart. Therefore they will continue to employ massive staff of humans as they continue to grow.

    Ya. I worked at a Fulfillment Center for 2 years, summer 2015 thru spring 2017. It was HELL. There were good days, here and there, but it sucked balls. No Amazon prime discount, no optical or health insurance until after 13 months of employment, no goals or aspirations or incentives, ANYBODY COULD WORK THERE: large hiring groups, orientation, annoying "safety" LECTURING, ZERO physical training, Managers being ages 18-25 and only being managers bc they have a masters degree in business, but don't care for lifting a box themselves, Micromanaging "what are you doing" /excessive hovering and helicoptering, scolding and criticizing, Do This, Don't do This, Don't Do That, No That's Not Allowed. "15min break" is really 12 minutes to Pee and Drink Water and Socialize, constant daily "assignments, very little consistency to repetitive work areas, too few bathrooms for 220 employees per shift, not allowed to stand around, if you don't have a box in your hand you get yelled at, too few boxes for too many employees, they would hire high school aged teenagers 15yrs old - 19yrs old to work in a warehouse with people in their 20s/30s/40s, there would be senior citizens in their 70s/80s also working there. No high school diploma necessary, no English necessary either, lots of illiterate immigrants and fresh-off-the-boat Islamic North Africans and Phillipinos would come in not speaking a word of English but get hired anyway, they couldn't read in English either, so a lot of sorting boxes required the ability to Read In English. Little to no training, had to learn from New Friends, not managers. High school social atmosphere x5000. Too much slave labor. Lots of robotic sorting machines were being installed in Spring of 2017, and I was already witnessing and being a victim of Not Enough Work/Too Many People, lots of verbal and emotional abuse form managers, just a lot of gossip and bullshit and Favoritism and Hurtful People. It wasn't emotionally or safe for me anymore. I left.

    You wouldn’t hear forklift trucks or other vehicles blowing their horns at you if you were listening to music. It’s a huge safety concern. One slight work around is that most warehouses do allow radios by a computer station or on the truck itself. However, headphones are most definitely a no go. Never going to happen.
    They are watching you... it’s all on reports. They can easily tell if your numbers don’t line up. They knows exactly who touched what and when. I don’t know about Amazon, but some employers incentivize you by publishing these reports as if they are leader boards, showing who is the fastest. If you want to impress people mirror the problem solving team you mentioned. They are most likely the ones who will move up the ranks.

    Ha amazon. Joke of a job. I use to work at H.T Hackney a trucking company and 10hrs would've been music to my ears back then. I was 19yrs old fresh out of high school working 13-15hr shifts only to get up and do it the very next day. We would start at 2:30pm and working until 2-4am in the morning or until the job was done. You had to meet a certain pick rate, you got 3 breaks, 1 being a 30min lunch. You never got to see daylight. You were either at work or in bed sleeping because every muscle in your body was sore. I started smoking to relieve my depression because I never got to see my friends or have a social life except on the weekends. I witnessed temps coming in for 4 hours and literally walking out the door. Take in mind, these were TEMPS. TEMPS had to work, they had no choice. These people would literally walk out the door and fucking leave by lunch.
    I worked in two departments, the first was just "the warehouse" and it was a big ass warehouse with no temperature control, so in the summer it'd get to about 85-87 degrees of pure humid heat, the winter would get down to whatever temp it was outside. I then moved to the freezer and it was a huge warehouse with just huge fucking fans and A/C units that got down to -15 degrees. They issued us freezer jump suits to prevent frostbite and gave us an extra $1 for hazard pay. There were nights where the floors would ice over because of the humidity coming in from the loading docks which rendered our electric pallet jacks useless. Sometimes the batteries would die or short out because the motors would thaw out and short out the power. If you can imagine hell freezing over, that was that place. You were completely isolated in a sub zero, concrete and metal jungle with dim lights and no escape for 13 hours.
    I stayed there for 2 years killing myself because nothing in my area payed as well as this did and I was greedy. I had the money, but didn't have a life.
    Never work a warehouse job like that. Amazon, trucking company, coca cola, pepsi, r&l, anything. All trucking or fulfillment companies borderline abuse workers.

    I was hired about 2 years ago as a Night Seasonal Stower (a bit slow moving of nights, 10 hours felt more like 12+)... Pretty much the same first week as you; however, while I was working there, I also worked part-time at Titan Aviation, which is the "Amazon Prime Airlines (Prime Air)" and "Prime Air Drone" Contractor, but not directly working for Amazon; then I got converted to a permanent (Blue) badge and transferred into ICQA (the people who count items) for about a month before I transferred over to Pick, since 10 hour ICQA nights felt like 15 hours (unless I was doing Damages), then went to Pick (by far the best entry level position if you like your night shifts feeling like they're going by faster ('sometimes') and after about 10 months of Picking nights, I became this facilities IT Human Resource Rep because of my Bachelors Degree in Computer Science and CompTIA + Linux Certification, and finally quit the Part-Time "Prime Air" job because I wasn't getting enough sleep between both jobs (I was like a zombie most days and working 7 days a week 60+ Hours during Peak with little sleep). I started off making about $12.25 per hour Seasonal with no bonus' (VCPs) until the (Blue) conversion, then I submitted my Degree and it went up to about $17 per hour for the same job (also $17 per hour was my starting pay with "Prime Air"), and by the time I reached I.T., I was making around $38 per hour; however, the normal IT people only made around $20 per hour, but I haven't seen anyone else with a degree or even a High School Diploma in that position yet, plus I think they might be idiots. I think they convert them just because their friends of people they know higher up. I wouldn't recommend working there unless you just desperately need a job (because money is necessary to keep your life rolling), you'll most likely stay stuck in the same category, and even if they ask you to train for another position, it's still the same pay and same quality of position because it's never a promotion until you reach a new Level (eg. Level 2, Associate 2) on your title. Well, good luck to you, if you don't get that, you're making the same pay and it's not a Promotion. It's possible, but if your young enough to go back to school, please take this job to help you get help on the finances of school, through your own employed budget. Good Luck. This company is evil, so if you can, please take your classes that Amazon will pay far as far as not doing anything they're trying to make do in their own classes that they mostly fund. Otherwise, just skip it! If you're a kid still who still has time to go to college, you can do better than this. Please kids, do something that's worth your effort. I want ALL you young people to do better than what Amazon offers by getting a REAL Job that pays real money... I don't recommend making any less than $30 per hour if you have a Bachelors Degree. Otherwise, just take what they offer only for the purpose of paying off your real school debts, sorry... but this is good if you just have to do it or need financial help for the purpose of living.

    Amazon employees need to get together an unionize. I know amazon tries their best to stop it but seriously the pay and benefits you would get from unionizing in a company like amazon would be at least competitive to similar jobs with living wages. Up here in Canada Walmart pays their employees decently in the warehousing portion with solid benefits because they don’t want a union.

      Yeah when I was working I was getting $12.50 an hour (working the night shift), i think they've raised the pay to $15+ since then. I still wouldn't recommend the job as it really wears you down after a short time. Perhaps if Amazon pays $5-10 more than your current job it would be worth it, but besides that keep what you have, try to move up, or find somewhere else.

      Technically it's an hour because you get 30 minutes unpaid and 2 15 minutes paid. People will say the breaks are not their full length because of the time it takes to get to and from your work station and the fact that you have to be at your station RIGHT at the final minute. However I don't see how it's THAT big of a deal. Personally I don't even like sitting for long when I take a break because it puts me in a rest mode and I come back too relaxed. I've heard they also have 12 hour shifts as well and an additional 15 minute paid break is added as well.

I spent many hours and days shifting compost, removing stones and garbage. I sat in the sun and listened to audio books and that made it enjoyable. I also figured out this question and answers site would pay me $.05 per answer (something like that) so I would rapidly answer questions in multiple windows. I can find rhythms and happiness in really boring work as long as I get a reward ... The only issue is social anxiety, if someone looks at me weird I want to cry in a corner which translates to my energy being depleted.

      Here at the Troutdale, Oregon Amazon you have to pack at least 255 items per hour but just recently lowered it to 200.

    Is it a stable job? Hiring 40+ people with no interview seems like they would let you people go easily

    • @GamingTaylor
      @GamingTaylor  7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      It's stable if you can consistently hit the rates they want you to hit. Otherwise they will slowly push you out, or try to get you to leave voluntarily. The big problem is that you don't feel a sense of respect or importance because someone can easily replace you at any time.

    Is It normal to work ten hour shifts in the states? I live in Finland and the normal workday is 8 hours including 30min unpaid lunch break. Oh and 2 10 minute Coffee breaks.

    Actually working at Amazon sounds like a great initial job. Work hard, save your money and figure out what trade school or education you want to pursue. 4 10 hour days with 3 days off sounds great to me. Or.... work at Amazon while you figure out which branch of the military you want to join and the military will train you for free along with great benefits. As a gamer, you might make an awesome drone pilot....

    I have been working there for a month. Lots of people come and go every week. Very repetitive work and it does take a toll on the body, especially the lower back since there's a lot of bending over. Some of the upper management called "Ambassadors" are pricks and are generally disorganized every night.
    Tip to potential employees working at sortation facilities: There is really NO benefit of working really hard to where you surpass your quota. (IE: Number of packages stowed each hour/by the end of the shift). You're only asking to be placed in a more high-intense position of the job where you strain your body more for the same pay. People who are slightly below the quota are even placed in the easiest sections of being a stower where the aisles are half the size; essentially being rewarded for not being able to keep up ~intertesting. Don't worry or feel overwhelmed that your packages are stacking up on your bench. You're not obligated to finish all of them by the end of your shift; just meet your quota(or barely) (which is 2-3 packages stowed in one minute) and you won't be strained as bad.

      Honestly a lot of warehouses and factories are cliquey and political lo key. At places like this it's happening on breaks and outside of work it's self. I've literally worked at places where I watched people do nothing but walk around and talk to people get hired because of this and I got laid off despite busting my ass.
