    I imagine that William Money is the same character from the good the bad and the ugly. He regrets his life and finds it hard to come to terms with it.
    His children have humbled him. The death of the woman he loved has made him see what sorrow comes from death. The death of his only friend makes him go back to kill one last time.
    Great vid. Cheers.

    Good analysis, although I disagree with your conclusion that the Will Munny got by in the final scene through dumb luck and chance. I think the scene perfectly reflects Little Bill's monologue in the jailhouse about the best gun fighters never getting "rattled under fire". Where the rest of them all just start shooting wildly, Munny keeps his cool and methodically shoots them all. Other than than, I agree with everything you said.

      Wyglyph Did you notice that, in the scene where he learns of Ned's death, the whiskey hits his lips at the same moment the girl speaks his name? He becomes the character at that point. Man I love that film.

      tcorourke2007 that’s one of the things I love about this movie and why I’ve rewatched it so many times. Every time I watch it I catch some little detail that I’d never noticed before. Pay more attention to a different secondary character I’d never noticed before. There’s a few movies that do this so well. Goodfellas is another one of those.

    Well done video. The only part I disagree with was the idea that the main character was able to triumph through "dumb luck and chance". I think he was able to internally connect with the William Munny of the past, and relive the role of the type of gunslinger that Little Bill had mentioned earlier when he said something about being calm under fire was more important than being fast.

      I also disagree that Munny triumph through "dumb luck and chance", he wins thanks to the reputation and name he made to himself, yo can see the fear of all the deputies when they realized who he was....You can also can see a little fear in little Bill face...

    I am a Cinema Studies major. This is one of the best critiques I heard on the Western genre in a long time. When I saw 'Unforgiven" in 1992, I did not draw the same conclusions as you., What you are saying about this film went right over my head. But you are right. Clint Eastwood's character is the obvious fate of Josie Wales and 'The Man with No Name" who grows old. He can't mount a horse because of crippling arthritis and his gunslinging days are over because of absent-mindedness and bad eye-sight. He tries to settle down but his wife either leaves him or dies and he winds up a single parent with 2 kids.

    We apparently watched two different movies. While it did have more a story line than killed the outlaw and got the girl, your take on certain parts were 180 from what I got from the movie.
    1. English Bob was a blood thirsty killer who killed for self-enrichment, as Little Bill and William Munny did.
    2. This movie was about not just the aging of wild gunmen but of the civilization coming to the west. All on the wrong side of the law, long ago, were trying to be more civilized and finding out the new times just weren't made for them. They lived beyond a time where most men like them died young.
    3. Little Bill was vicious only when backed up and Will Munny wasn't himself unless he was drinking. His wife made him give up drinking and that helped to try to domesticate him but he was a complete failure domestically. Once he got liquor in him, he returned to his former self re: his courage and ability to shoot with a pistol.
    4. They all still had deep within them what they had long ago but we only saw it come out in Little Bill. He tried to trick English Bob into taking the pistol that had the first round empty behind the chamber. He beat English Bob when he had disarmed him, sucker punched him and had him surrounded by numerous armed men. However, when confronted by Will Munny, as he addressed to Mr. Beauchamp, "it ain't so easy to shoot a man... an' if the sonofabitch is shootin' back at you... well, it'll unnerve most fellas", Little Bill fumbled around tryin' to quickly pull out his pistol and he did fire first at Will Munny, but even though he was within 10', he missed and Will returned fire, dropping Little Bill to the floor of the saloon.
    While the movie depicted the wild west was not so glamorous, it was very dark and wild, more so than portrayed in the dime novels.

      @RedRebel8 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi
      great points.
      English Bob declined the pistol as he thought it to be empty. When Little Bill shows him that it wasn't, Bob displays regret. So while I agree with your other points I felt that Bobs smile at Bill was saying 'You aint gonna fool me that gun is empty'. but Bill emptying the bullets is an unspoken language. Bill is saying 'no it wasnt empty and you did just miss your chance'.

    • @emaleroland
      @emaleroland 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can disagree but you need to watch that part again. The gun only had 5 rounds. The gun was cocked by Mr. Beauchamp, and sitting on an empty chamber. Had English Bob accepted the pistol, Little Bill knew he had a small window of opportunity. English Bob may not have even tried another one as he might consider all rounds to be empty.
      Did you not watch as Little Bill emptied the cartridges onto the floor of the jail? The last chamber just clicked. As the cartridges were hitting the floor, English Bob thought he had missed an opportunity but as the last chamber only clicked, he realized his chance of survival would have been slim to none.
      Little Bill then told English Bob, "You were right not to take it. I would have killed ya'."

    I really enjoyed your analysis. Just like you say, Unforgiven revitalized the Western in general. The only problem is that everything made after Unforgiven is nothing but a cliched crapfest! ... also, you are totally correct in saying Will Munny was actually sloppy in his abilities. Will himself says that he has "always been lucky when it comes to killing folks." The fact that he was always drunk gave him a detached fearlessness that allowed him to take every situation slowly,( just like Little Bill emphasizes being the most important characteristic for triumphing in a gun fight.)

    So much great acting in this film: Eastwood is superb, Hackman won an oscar for his role.
    Great work by Jaimz Woolvett too IMHO, as 'The Schofield Kid' (not Frisco Kid as he's called in this review) - should've had a best support nomination also, I reckon.
    And a powerful story also - a masterpiece in my opinion.

When a Western comes out, Ill watch it and Hoo Hum, Its not until a few years later when I watch it again, do I realize the greatness of it. The Good , bad, ugly, Josse Wales and Unforgiven. Open Range and Tombstone would round out my top 5.

    Following with your observation of how Unforgiven puts a spin on some of Clint's earlier westerns:
    The Outlaw Josey Wales:
    Lone Watie: How did you know which one was goin' to shoot first?
    Josie Wales: Well, that one in the center: he had a flap holster and he was in no itchin' hurry. And the one second from the left: he had scared eyes, he wasn't gonna do nothin'. But that one on the far left: he had crazy eyes. Figured him to make the first move.
    The Unforgiven:
    W.W. Beauchamp: Who, uh, who'd you kill first?
    Will Munny: Huh?
    W.W. Beauchamp: When confronted by superior numbers, an experienced gunfighter will always fire on the best shot first.
    Will Munny: Is that so?
    W.W. Beauchamp: Yeah, Little Bill told me that. And you probably killed him first, didn't you?
    Will Munny: I was lucky in the order, but I've always been lucky when it comes to killin' folks.

    • @goiterjoe
      @goiterjoe 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With regards to Will Munny surviving the final shootout due to luck and chance, I saw that as another old western myth, the quickdraw artist, being ripped to shreds. So many of the old westerns glorified shootouts being won by the faster man shooting from the hip. One of my favorite westerns, A Fistful of Dollars, has Clint in two separate scenes killing 4 men by shooting the fastest from the hip. That particular movie even ends with Clint getting involved with a duel of who can reload the fastest. Unforgiven turned this concept around with the final shootout; as the deputies are shooting as fast as they can and tearing up the bar, Clint is carefully taking aim and making every shot count.
      Gene Hackman's character in Unforgiven has an interesting dialogue to this effect when he had English Bob and Beauchamp in the jail cell.

    this picture would have to be my favourite western ,although I did like a lot of John Waynes ,but I think that the confidence and relaxed attitude of Eastwood shone through with a maturity that all his earlier movies just didn't quite have ,although they were good , I felt this one was his best ,I think it took him a lifetime to achieve this role ,and lets not forget Gene Hackman ,always a brilliant and believable actor .

    The Stagecoach. movie with the Duke in my mind is the best western ever made. I know it was the second Stagecoach made and think there 2 more. For year in which it was made it touched on allot of social issues. Like prostitution, screwing the Indians over again, alcoholism among others. John Ford made some great films I think Stagecoach stands alone. They Were Expendable is my favorite but certainly not of the western genera. Movies SUCK today. Car chases and redicilous explosions. Lets not forget cartoon or comic book characters. I put comics and cartoons away a long time ago. Thats what sells I guess.

    I don't think he killed everyone at the end because of luck or chance. Remember he wouldn't drink all movie. Killing had so affected him that he couldn't bring himself to do it without a drink. Before he clumsily shot at people missing many times. In the shootout at the end after a few drinks he was a dead eye.

    Not too bad, but William Munny isn't really representative of Eastwood's other characters having aged because his other characters don't seem as bad as Munny since he had killed women and children. Also, the part about there not being any legends, but rather lies and exaggerations, isn't exactly accurate since Munny lives up to his legendary reputation at the end. And yes, he got lucky in the end to a point, but he clearly had to have skill to take out five guys, regardless. (BTW, what's with the static? lol)

    • @blackroostercreation
      @blackroostercreation 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paradox xodarap Sure have. It's one of my favorite Eastwood movies. First of all, it was only one "bitch," I believe … but it's been a few years since I've seen it, so I might be wrong. But the most popular thoughts on his character in that movie is that he was either the devil or the former lawman's reincarnated spirit sent to take revenge on the town. So although that one character went in the opposite direction, surely William Munny isn't an older version of an evil spirit risen from the dead, either. ;-)

      whoa. I saw it. Didn't know that.
      And actually it was 2. Like one and a half. Mid-rape it turned consensual which personally I found kind of unrealistic.
      Personally if clint eastwood tried to buttfuck me I wouldn't do it because one: buttfucking just looks really painful to be honest with you. And they are like poopshoots.
      I mean I have nothing against people who stick weiners in butts but its just like why would you want poop on your dick. like I don't want that you know?

      Paradox xodarap LOL. As I said, I haven't seen it in a while, despite it being one of my favorite Eastwood movies. I once went through every Eastwood-directed movie and enjoyed doing so … and was oddly surprised at how well he did romance with The Bridges of Madison County. Which didn't need any butt sex. lol

    Although Unforgiven through the majority of the film gives us a different more realistic take on the old west, the end of the film betrays the rest of it as Eastwood becomes his old self and suddenly is able to gun down every one in the saloon with ease and accuracy.

    Tombstone to me seems like a movie made by little kids. Like a Muppet western. The makeup looks fake, everybody has these million dollar figures, mustaches look fake, it looks silly to me. A friend liked it. I couldnt sit through 15 minutes.
    The unforgiven was put together by somebody who was there in the old westerns and it shows!
    Sorry, in an age where everybody looks like models, it's all hard to believe and watch.

    • @tcorourke2007
      @tcorourke2007 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never understood how Tombstone was so popular. There are classic westerns I enjoy that are overly simplistic or even downright goofy. Tombstone was just embarrassing.

    Big words and impressive vocabulary don't make up for the awkward delivery that results from the narrator being in over his head with his attempt at prose. It would be better if he spoke at his natural level of grammar. We can hear the struggle.
