  • This is a look back on Terry Porter's career. Terry Porter effected the game in a multitude of ways from his shooting, passing, and defense. Helping him carve out a long career. Earning two all stars along the way. Being a key member of the Portland Trailblazers teams that went to two NBA finals. Having big time performances over the runs. Helping him become an all time franchise favorite. Before going onto other franchises helping them partake in the playoffs. Getting his jersey retired in the end by Portland.

One of the all-time greatest backcourt combos in the history of the NBA- Porter and Drexler. 2X Conference champions- 2 NBA FINALS. Porter is a HOFer.

No doubt, it's just too bad that like many All Star players and tandems from the 1990's they were up against some Michael Jordan guy from Chicago who was evidently pretty good at this basketball thing...........

Except he's not a hall of famer.
Don't get me wrong, Terry is one of my favorite players of all time and I have extra love for him because he went to the same college as me where I played ball but he had a very short prime that won't get him into the hall.
At his peak (88-92) he was special and the 91 season adjusted plus minus stats have him as the top rated guard in the league but he fell off a cliff after 93. He revitalized his career as a role player for the Spurs but never got that ring.

Terry Porter was the real deal and gets overlooked because he played in an era of great point guards. Magic, Isiah Thomas. John Stockton, Kevin Johnson, Mark Price and Tim Hardaway just to name some. I remember Porter getting the best of Stockon in the 1992 Western Conference Finals and was one of the keys for the Blazers making the Finals.

Making the playoffs in 16 out of 17 years and making the Finals twice is incredibly unprecedented! Trading Kiki away may have been the nail in their coffin as far as winning it all, because--at least with him--you had Drexler, Porter, and Kiki as scorers. Detroit would have had trouble defending all 3 and so would the Bulls. Those series would have been way more interesting then...

And let us not forget, Arvydas Sabonis was not able to play when he was drafted due to the Soviet Union playing hard ball. Blazers possibly could have won it all if they had Sabonis, he was such a beast.

I worked in a restaurant in Minneapolis during his T'wolves years. I waited on several players. I have to say he was the classiest, most understated player I served. He instantly became a favorite. Oh, and he could ball!

I loved Terry Porter. I don't know what's worse: the fact that current NBA fans don't know about Terry, or the fact that they don't know that a PG can be more "smart and tough" than "fast and flashy" ...
