Are you ready to take an advanced rider class?

  • If you don't have basic rider skills, don't even think about taking an advanced rider class. It can become extremely frustrating and counter-productive. If you're having trouble at low speeds, practice the slow race at a walking pace while in the friction zone and have a little pressure on the rear brake and Keep your head and eyes up. You need to be able to do this exercise easily without putting a foot down before even thinking about taking an advanced class.

Two things for everyone reading these comments to take note of:
    1) Many of us with years of experience STILL realize that we can always improve our riding skills.
    2) The comments being made here are comments of encouragement and support. As uncomfortable as it can be to see the gentleman duck walking and dropping his bike, there is still an overall support and belief that with starting over on the basics, he can and will improve and "get it". Two wheelers support other two wheelers.

The 18 x 36 exercise is my favourite and the most frustrating exercise so far. When I start to feel a bit overconfident, I do that exercise and it puts what is what into perspective. I always watch Jerry's training videos prior to every riding season. This is year 8 with my riding adventures and his training has saved me several times through the years. The importance of watching the training videos cannot be understated. It is a lifelong education process. Hats off to Jerry for his dedication toward rider safety and enjoyment. Well done Jerry! Keep it going!

Well I'm definitely not ready for this class yet, however, I wanted to say that just watching these videos has helped me immensely in my own skills. I did something stupid and after not riding for over 25 years, bought a Suzuki C90T which weighs just north of 800LBS. Like I said, stupid. Well I didn't know what I didn't know. Watching these videos has gotten me down to about 27 ' or so on u turns, I can do the slow race, as well as the straight line cone weave fairly well. I've almost got 1k miles on my new bike and will either be taking one of your classes out here in NC or riding down to FL to take one there with you personally. Thank you so much for these videos and your knowledge. You even helped me with recommending a Barnett clutch for the bike, which I got and installed and have been extremely happy with. Thanks again, and God bless.

I took the basic rider course and got my M license in late 2016. Since that time I've thrown down an average of 11,000 miles per year across 3 Harley platforms (Sportster, Softail, and now Touring). I'm on my bike every day and actually ride more than I drive (70-75% of my travel is riding, while from 2016-2019 100% of my travel was on a bike). I would love to take an advanced rider course, but want to get some more seat time on my 2021 Road Glide before I do. Currently have 4,400 miles on her.
Definitely want to do this course but won't until I feel I'm ready to.
The important thing with these courses...SAFETY! Above all else...ride the bike. If you have to pass up some cones to keep the bike upright and going, that's what you do. You won't complete the exercise properly, but you'll stay safe and you can identify what you need to work on AFTER the exercise.

My intention is to not upgrade until I've mastered the bike I've got. I actually spent 15 years with mopeds and scooters, mostly as backup/fun vehicles but I started riding them full time during the last few years I had em. A year and a half ago, I got a rebel250. I definitely feel like I've got a good handle on it, I'd also basically only owned manual cars so the clutch came pretty naturally. Why does the advanced course dwell on tight maneuvers? That’s a good skill to have but it only makes up a very small percentage of riding in the real world. Real situations are decreasing radius turns, gravel and other objects in the road, knowing where to position yourself in traffic, breaking hard for a deer, etc. There should be some way to simulate real situations in a training course.

It broke my heart but riding the motorcycle is only one small part of performing the job safely on the streets. The few who didn't make it knew by the time they were let go that it was not for them except one. The City decided to let the officer go to another academy where she crashed her bike in an exercise, broke her back and had to retire. Hopefully that man will heed your advice for his own safety and thank you later because of it.

Motorman! You Donna and Joe were awesome! Great class, very professional! I was a little apprehensive at first but definitely a highlight of my trip! 3000 miles and a week later and I made it home.
I was mowing on my rider and couldn't help but doing a figure 8 and thinking about your class! The neighbors think I'm crazy! Lol. Thanks for everything! I'm a better rider and would love to come back!

Hi Doug! Glad you enjoyed our class, it was a pleasure meeting you at our class! Hey everyone, Doug WON the BEST rider in the class trophy last week! I sent you something, it should be there tomorrow or Tuesday. Happy you had a safe journey and made it home with smiles and memories!

@@docdonna489Got it. TY. My front tire was scrubbed to the edges.. never seen that...good times! Riders that think they can ride should do this. You will learn something! The memories and experience are totally worth it. Then ride the Tail of the Dragon on the way home.

@@dingbial9796 glad your picture disc made it to you!! Jerry and I are happy you had a great time at our class, you're one of the best riders we've had the pleasure of meeting and instructing this year at a class. Yes, our front tires get scrubbed too, I go through front tires more than the average bear. 😎 Did you get your Dragon T-shirt? I love that road. Thanks for your positive words, we appreciate it very much. Next road trip down this way, you know where to find us for another class.!

So question to take the harley davidson advanced riding course do you need a harley motorcycle or is it any motorcycle to your liking?

I have a question Jerry, I’ve been watching many of your videos. I bought a Harley Ultra, been practicing in a parking lot. Working on tightening my turns. When you are doing tight U-turns or figure 8s, are your bars at full lock? Appreciate what you do, if I lived in Florida I’d come to your class!

    • @docdonna489
      @docdonna489 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Hi Tim...My bars are not at full lock when doing the uturns or figure 8's at our classes. Now, if you're doing an 18' Uturn, probably, same with the figure 8's at motor officer dimensions.

Courses are available in a large number of states. There is probably a location near you.

In the 18 ft figure 8 you'll hit fill lock for a split second but not in the 24 ft exercises.

😞 I felt bad for the guy but you did the right thing. If he wants to; I hope he finds the courage to keep riding and gets more comfortable with practice. I hope he got home ok.

I have a 08 FLHTC. Under 8000 mi. I’m really thinking about 10 or 12” ape hangers hoping it takes pressure of my arms & shoulders. What do you think.

I bet he can't ride a bicycle very well either. BUT, I don't think he should give up. He might be worried about damaging the motorcycle.
I would start him on a smaller cheaper motorcycle.

Motorman, could I ride from Louisiana to take a basic test for my msf proof for my endorsement? The dmv is not doing it nor is the statetrooper class open and Harley is book up for a couple of months...
