  • I’ve been hiking alone for several years now but having just relocated to Washington, it feels like an entirely new experience! Come along with me as I hike Wallace Falls and share 10 tips to help you feel safer on your next solo adventure!
    1. Always tell someone (who’s not on trail with you) where you’re going, share the trail link and an ETA of when they can expect to hear from you.
    2. Download AllTrails and get their + subscription which allows you to download maps to use offline, shares wrong turn alerts, and lets you see maps in 3D.
    3. Be aware of your surroundings and greet people as they pass you to ensure they know you notice them.
    4. If you’re in bear country, carry bear spray otherwise I always have a small can of mace easily accessible.
    5. Plan ahead! Read trail reviews on AllTrails and check the weather using Windy.
    6. 3 things that are always in my pack when hiking solo: my Garmin InReach Mini, a head lamp and a battery charger for my phone.
    7. Bring your pup!
    8. Not wearing headphones actually helps me feel safer! Knowing I can hear what's going around me is comforting. If I ever need some background noise, I listen to a podcast or music through the speaker on my phone and am sure to pause it if I'm nearby someone else to ensure I don't disturb their experience.
    9. On that note, you might find comfort picking popular trails your first few times hiking solo - it usually gives peace of mind knowing you'll encounter others.
10.Not sure if you want to hike alone? Try a solo walk on a nature trail nearby where you live to test it out
Gentle reminder to always (always, always) follow Leave No Trace Principles (that includes packing out your orange peels and dog poo

An add-on to tip 3: if you say something to people you pass they are more likely to remember passing you if anything happens to you elsewhere! Washington people are the worst for just walking past people and not even saying hello. Like we’re the only people for miles and you’re not even gonna say hi?!
