Cheers for sharing a brief look at the ASD exhibition with us :-) Looks like it would be a great place to spend a few hours.. Thank You to You both, much appreciated.
I will actually be in Canberra next week.. Wasn't planning on going to the museum as I went last time I was there, but the ASD exhibit and the new wing might be worth a revisit.
That telescope really reminded me of the Oddie Telescope at Stromlo Observatory, we used to use it in school. It was a 9 inch Grubb refractor with a similar construction to that, and a mount..... that was basically the whole building. Probably wasnt even as good as the 12" Newtonian at school but it felt really special using that thing. Apparently it was our first federal building. It was destroyed in the Canberra fires in 2003 but apparently faithfully reconstructed in 2011. Should go see next im down there. NGL i reckon you'd like Canberra as a place to live, its a fairly sane place, nothing like people imagine.
Hey, I wish I could go there! Lots of awesome stuff in that museum. I'm really wondering what would happen if a bunch of nerds got these exhibits to actually run. I've never heard of Mrs Mac, but it's always good to hear about another one of us. BAE Systems? I wonder if this is the same BAE as the one that made mic preamps and other pro audio stuff. The Rockex sounds like Eddie Van Halen, tubes and stuff, über cool on overdrive, haha! The Cray is a damn legend for sure, I love its design! Not too many blinkenlights to gefingerpoken. but still. CuriousMarc and Usagi Electric would be proud to have one and get it working :) Other exhibitions are nice too, and the telescope... just look at this, a real deal thing of beauty and a joy for ever.
I have boards from the Cray XMP and a Cray II in acrylic show cases over my fireplace. Would have loved to have seen a Cray II running bathed in its Flourinert cooling fluid. How fast times change!
love them Crays.. would love one in my lounge room to sit on! lol australias entire supercomputing capability... all smoke n mirrors... why doesnt that surprise me?! :P
That secure voice comms sounded eery, and with a lot of noise on it, especially with a full duplex circuit, where it sounded like you had a theremin playing in the background. But it did give at least intelligible voice over it.
Dave please don't do walkthroughs where you show people who didn't ask to be in your video. It's unfair and inconsiderate to assume that the public are OK to appear on the Internet to hundreds, thousands, perhaps millions of people without consent. To me it's one step down from video shaming culture pervasive on social media. Who knows what facial recognition data set is being built from the content to further enrich the tech bros, and I should have the choice about whether to give them my likeness. For all the criticism we level at 'old media' they do tend to stick out due to the size of their equipment (oooer) and because they are usually in teams, so they are easy to avoid. They also tend to follow codes of conduct when it comes to showing the general public, ever noticed how group shots of the public are either blurred or shot from the neck down? At other times they tend to request people sign release forms. Yes of course there are exceptions, generally around "news worthy" events which you would expect a news crew to cover, that's one reason why I don't attend protests even if I agree with the cause. To those who would argue that "in public you have no right to privacy", my response is that the privacy laws were written at a time where you needed a TV station or print empire to publish someone's likeness to the masses. That made it a rare event. Now some bloke with an iPhone can do it. As every bloke with an iPhone is usually aimlessly wandering chatting to themselves and pointing it at stuff you never know if they're shooting for personal use or their million subscriber TH-cam channel. Just because you *can* do it doesn't make it right. At least if they're pouting or showing a "V" and a bit of cleavage (boys and girls alike) you know there's a good chance it's for Instagram, so you can veer off! I understand the appeal of a walkthrough, it is quick to produce with very little post production required. Please don't do it. Instead, if you're showing something amongst the masses, please take the time to edit the content to only show the points of interest and people who give consent to be in your video. @@HesderOleh It isn't ridiculous actually, it's about being respectful of others and making a minor change about how his "out in public" videos are edited. I see why you'd jump on this, you have a lot of videos of unsuspecting people on your channel. Put it this way, if I knew you I wouldn't go to any event I knew you'd attend, is that fair? Of course we all know Dave's face and can avoid him, I'm asking for those who don't. I would ask the same of any TH-camr I follow, but I can't ask them all. If society is going to further descend into a real life version of Black Mirror's "White Bear" I think I'll check out now.
Thanks for the tour, I love early cryptography tech. The Aboriginal art was amazing too.
Thank you, That was awesome.
Thanks Dave!

I'm a sucker for a good museum, and that looks awesome. If I should ever find myself in Canberra I'll definitely have a look. Thanks for sharing!

Wow! There's only about 300 Enigma machine's known remaining in the world, that's far out!
That's some real rare history right there.

Did you ever read thru the documents I sent you about SIGSALY? I remember you opening them on a mailbag. Thanks. - JQuinn
ENIGMA! I love the replica that I built a few years ago.
poor Alan. Such a superb brain, literally killed by stereotypes
Cool

A stuffed penguin..... for all you Linux fanboys
I totally missed that opportunity

That is a ridiculous ask. People are filming all the time everywhere. It is very obvious he is recording. He is holding his phone out and narrarating.
