  • In this video I will show you how to replace a 2003 Silverado Fuel pump without dropping the fuel tank. Instead I will show you how to raise the bed to gain access to the top of the fuel tank and the fuel pump.

Thanks. Just did this on my 2006 Silverado 1500. Ran into a few things. One of the bed bolts on the opposite side just spun. Was able to still get bed up enough anyways. Also the ring didn't come off in 2 taps like your video. I had to soak it in Kroil and bang it very hard to get it to break free. Also when I pulled the fuel pump out the sucker wasn't even held together. It was all in pieces. I have to physically look down into the tank and pick parts of it out..

I'm fixing to do my son's 03 Silverado but I'll add that before I drop the bed I'm going to start it to make sure the pump works. As a former mechanic at a local garage I've seen new pumps be faulty.

I don't need to replace my fuel pump ! But I do need to replace my fuel pressure sensor , & this video was very helpful showing were exactly it is , & how sensor wire clips on to it ! They say you can replace it without dropping the tank or raising the bed ! I have a 03 Silverado with the composite bed , & there seems to be more of a gap between the bed , & the cab so you can see it more clearly ! Again this video was very helpful for replacing the fuel pump sensor thanks for doing this helpful video.

8-18-2022 What I did is ; from the bottom of the truck, location fuel pump drill a total of four holes, two holes one side of tank by fuel pump two holes other side of tank by fuel pump, away from wiring or hoses to make a door from the top side, how big that's up to you. The idea is to make a door from the top side make it easy to get to whatever you might be when you need to get to the pump. People getting older look out for yourself in the future. /\ it might be at a auto parts store fuel pump go out . Go in the auto parts store buy a pump open that door and install it .In about 30 minutes going on about your business . Have a nice day .

Did you test the pump before you lowered the bed back down? I think I have the same issue. I just bought an 07 Z71 (5.3 L) with about 6 PSI on the fuel rail with key on. It starts very roughly, but then the pressure is fluctuating like crazy, 30PSI to about 50 and the meter is going wild. I have a low fuel light on and the needle on the empty peg. I tried to put gas in it, but it will not accept a cup full. It backs up into the neck. I crawled under the truck to tap on the tank to see if it was indeed full but it has a skid plate and heat shield covering all of it. I can't touch the tank at all. I'm going to assume it is full. I'm not looking forward to dropping the tank in the driveway but your method looks so much easier. Thanks for sharing, brother.
    Cheers from Louisiana.

I’ve done mechanic work all my life since I was 14 years old and I am now 58 years old and I’ve done it both ways. Remove the tank or lift the bed of the truck up and what’s crazy is if you have a lift you can go ahead and take all the bolts out of the bed and use your Lyft to pick the bed completely up.. I had a bet with the guy at a company we were working at but at this particular company we sold cars online and I wasn’t in the mechanics shop. I was right next to it and I was the manager over the detail department.. there was a 2000 year model truck and a 2001 year model truck and both GM & both of them needed fuel pumps. I looked around on the trucks and I picked the one I wanted because some of them if they have a trailer hitch depending on the type they have can get in your way if you try to remove the bed.
I asked the mechanic that was working how long would it take him to remove the fuel pump and he said he could get it out in back in in about two hours and I was like OK I bet you I can have it out and back in in 30 minutes he bet me $50 he could beat me. He knew I did mechanic work before I came there because I built his transmission in his Camaro but anyway , I also knew that he was going to drop the tank if he quoted me a time of two hours. While I was talking to him about the truck and everything I was gathering the tools up on the cart that I was working off of because the tools I was going to use was totally different than the ones he was using. All I needed was an 18 mm wobble, a long extension, a small torques 10 mm socket and a 15mm and a 18 and 19 wrench because these were the type that the fuel lines bolted into the top of the pump instead of snapping in.
To make a long story short, which is kind of late for that it took me 12 minutes to remove the fuel pump I took and removed 8 18 mm bolts and the 3 torques bolts around the filler neck and the 10 mm ground strap and unplugged the tail lights From the harness under the truck and I position the lift and raised the bed up, he asked me what in the hell was I doing. He said it was stupid. Anyway, I laid the pump down beside of his truck and he hadn’t even came close to getting the tank out and he said how the hell did you get the pump out that quick? The reason I didn’t slam it back in is because the parts house took longer to bring me the fuel pump then it did for me to take it out anyway the book called for about two hours on that and he got paid book time for it and I did it in less than 30 minutes or I would have if the parts had been there and I told him that’s how you make money doing mechanic work if you can’t beat the book time you’re not gonna make any money. From then on out, he removes the bed or at least raises it up.
I’ve seen people set 5gallon buckets on the tire on the driver side and just loosen the passenger side bolts and tilt the bed up and set the bucket on the tire with a board across it to hold it up.

On some year model years there is just a strainer on the pump and no other filter. This truck also has an in-line filter on the left frame rail below the drivers door.

@@TH-camStudio101 Ok, make sure the gauge float is snapped completely onto the plastic clip on the sensor and then feed the float into the tank first at an angle before dropping the rest of the fuel pump module into the tank. Good luck!

Maybe a major cleaning of the area should be done before, With all that wiggling makes me wonder how much crud got down into the tank. I just cut a hole in my bed and made a trap door, vacuumed everything out and cleaned it well before anything.

It will fit through the hole, just wiggle it around until it slips through. Take your time and line it up then pull straight up then tilt to get the float out. Good luck.

Just get an air ratchet and drop the tank. Break them if need be. Power wash tank once out with lines capped, replace the bolts ALWAYS and, do it the right way first time. Bed realignment can be a bear. Just saying.

    I have a 2003 chevy 4 door with a 6.5 foot bed.
I cut a trap door in the bed.
    The measurements are:
    (14.5" x 14.5" door)
20.5" from the left wall, and
    11" from the front wall,
will give you the center of the pump itself.
Mark the center and measure out 7.25" in all 4 directions. This will give you the door centered on the center of the pump.
Plenty of room to do the work without a hassle.
Secure the door with tabs and silicone.

If you go to that extent to take away and actually it's 6 bolts and if you go to that extent that you lift the bed up take the bed off it takes 10 minutes to take the bed off the truck why sit there and go through all that BS of trying to prop that bad up off the frame it's much easier to take it off it's much easier to do the job without it on the truck believe me after I've done it twice if you get it to the point where you break it away from the bed and you lift it up just pull the thing off it takes three you know maybe four buddies you know four of you four men can lift the damn bed off that's a no-brainer man
