  • Jarrod takes a look at the ball that helped India win their first Test of this series at Lord's. We talk Jasprit Bumrah, women's inswing, and throw in some Ray Lindwall for clickbait.

    This video perfectly encapsulates what JJ Bumrah really is. He's a thinking bowler. I think Bumrah has begun the reinvention of bowling/bowlers' role. Also, to add to your point about White Ball skills being transferred into red ball cricket, a huge part of the credit must go to the major leagues, you no longer work with a local coach, you work with experts from around the world by the time you even hit the international scene. You DO NOT want to miss out on a fat cheque of that a season brings you so you get that butt of yours more regularly in the gym, going injury free and hurling balls at a toe crushing pace.
    Also, I never quite understood why RFB dont bowl from around the wicket. It's seen as a defensive option. Like you mentioned, it is an angle waiting to be explored. For one, I think Deepak Chahar should try it out. He's great with his lengths most of the time and working on the line from around could probably give him an extra weapon.

    The ball was so ridiculous, the umpire couldn't give it out. how can he pitch it in line from that angle and get it to spin on middle. Probably the ball of the series. Considering a series with some beauties from robinson, anderson, woakes, yadav, shami and siraj...that's saying something.

    This delivery definitely deserved a video! Great analysis and commentary. The one other thing which deserved a mention about this delivery was the umpire's reaction after it was reviewed. Getting the ball to pitch in line and straighten from that angle needed some real skill. The umpire was equally deceived by it.

    This has to be the ball of century.
    It's not just slow off-cutter, but everything about it was a masterclass in itself.
    Last over of Bumrah's spell. Pitch wasn't helping. He thinks of a plan. He knows the urgency of a wicket.
    Bowls a bouncer round the wicket. Wasted a delivery. Batsmen is afraid now. Should have gone with reliable bumrah yorker, but he's expecting a yorker too.
    So Bumrah bowled a masterpiece , a slow off-cutter executed to perfection and bamboozled a well set batsmen, who's just trying to defend , with an old ball, and LBW from round the wicket.
    Just amazing.

    When you progress from level to level in cricket, like from playing in the streets to playing for your class in school to playing for the main team etc, the margins get tighter and the shit that worked in a lower level rarely ever works in the next. Now apply that logic to internationals. What Bumrah has done here in a game of tiny margins for any decisions on the field is just magic and I wouldn't know how to explain this to someone who has never played the game. The odds of it working relied on him being perfect with his plan and hoping for the best and it just worked. That might as well be magic to us casual viewers and I cannot believe that we have been blessed with the opportunity to watch such a talent. Hope he plays cricket in front of a camera as long as possible.

    Very well done analysis, it is cricketing brain all the way, just superb animation as well. One thing interesting which you can mention here is that the UMPIRE thought that is NOT OUT, so if I remember right it was given NOT OUT probably because UMPIRE thought a Right Arm Seam Bowler bowling ROUND THE WICKET to a RIGHT HAND BATSMAN would have pitched that outside LEG STUMP but the SKILL of Bumrah meant it was pitched in line. Also Kohli took the review almost on instinct and it was given OUT on REVIEW. Even if pitched in line not many would think it would hit the stumps for the NATURAL ANGLE would take it past off-stump but BUMRAH bowled it in such a way that it not only PITCHED IN LINE, it was going to HIT the STUMPS and it was a SLOW OFF CUTTER and was a LENGTH BALL [not FULLER in LENGTH] for even if BUMRAH had bowled a SLOW YORKER probably Robinson would have kept it out for he was expecting the YORKER.

    One thing I noticed about the Ollie Robinson's dismissal seeing it real time during the match and again here in this animation that the ball actually looked to have pitched around middle and off or middle in the replay and spun back in but the hawkeye suggests that it pitched just in line with the leg stump
    At 1:23 the difference is clear...
    It's still 3 reds anyway but I just wondered ...
    Is it just me??? 🤔🤔🤔

    • @AnkushBhattacharya
      @AnkushBhattacharya 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it's mostly to do with missing frames while reconstructing a replay for hawkeye/ball-tracking. That's one of the main reasons umpire's call exist as inaccuracy in tracking impact and trajectory of the ball can happen, even if minuscule in scale. Hawkeye cameras as manually operated and are not completely devoid of human errors either.

    • @reubenashok937
      @reubenashok937 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AnkushBhattacharya yeah but even umpires call doesn't do justice to something so blatant, if that ball was even slightly towards the leg stump it would have been umpires call. then it would have been not-out, its clearly pitching on middle towards the off-stump.

    • @jimmy_xi9342
      @jimmy_xi9342 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AnkushBhattacharya I understand that.... That's why u have umpire's call on impact and hitting... But pitching should b accurate as it has already happened in real time whereas the other 2 things r projections so there can errors... But I think pitching should b accurately shown in the hawk eye as it has occurred in real time...there shouldn't b any anomalies in that

      The answer that you are looking for is much more simpler than that. Deviation of the ball is always relative to the trajectory from the point of release by the bowler. For a bowler who is bowling around the wicket, a good length ball pitching in line with leg stump will head towards just outside the off stump, unless it deviates. Now because the ball was an off-cutter, it deviated from its path or, as most cricket commentators would put it, "straightened" its trajectory to hit the middle stump. Imagine a bowler bowling from right where the stumps are, and bowling a straight ball and pitching it in line with middle stump in the good length area. If the ball does not deviate after pitching, it would go on and hit the middle stump. That is what Bumrah managed to achieve despite bowling around the wicket. The natural angle of the ball when it is released from the bowler's hand takes it away from a right-handed batsman, if the bowler is bowling from around the wicket. His delivery came back in just enough to go on and hit the stumps.

    Fantastic video as usual Jarrod. Makes perfect sense. Especially messing the footwork part by Bumrah for the last delivery. Robinson was worried that the ball will either be short or a yorker and that's why his front foot didn't go to the pitch of the ball.

    Your video was amazing and immensely detailed. But the umpire didn't give him out at first. The Indians had to take the DRS because the umpire thought it pitched outside leg. That's even more amazing that the ball was such deceiving that even the umpire wasn't ready for a length ball.

    what a beautiful breakdown! This ball was in many ways better than the Shaun Marsh slower ball given the context of the game and it being a right hander. Also I feel like Bumrah holds back on effort during the "not so important" spells during the day and ramps it way up, up to and past 90 mph when the moment is right, sort of like Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar did

      @@JarrodKimberYT I think his is far more pronounced. I think your analysis is top drawer btw. I don't think there is many others like it close to the same degree (pub intended :) maybe Shoab was and a few others but not to the same degree (obviously this could be measured pretty precisely and easily). Also adding this factor in conjunction with his short run up makes the ball harder to pick up quickly I'm sure whereas at least with Shoab you had the run up as a major factor you mentioned. Cummins Rabada Anderson Hazelwood etc I just don't see a hyper extended elbow close to Jasbrit. I'd be happy to be proven wrong though
