It's impossible to outplay Satriani! Something that is quite obvious in this video. I don't really care who's who in the studio or anywhere else, being drunk does not blur the fact that Satriani really played Lukather like a puppet here. The thing with Satch is that he's ego doesn't surpass his talent, which is not the case with Luke; would he had for instance Yngwie or Eddie here, they'd literally wipe the floor with this cute little fellow!

TomTrix99 there’s a difference between picking fast, and picking fast sloppily. Steve falls within the latter, and Petrucci or Gilbert would mop the floor with him. Not to mention his left hand is nothing compared to Joe’s. If you took away the picking it would sound even worse.

Lukes tones are usually always clearly present in the toto mix, which is probably because it's pretty damn tight, even back in the day when he was deep in a sauce of chorus and delay, but you will notice that most of the time when he is doing stuff with other players there is a tendency for them to be a whole lot more present than him. Usually when stuff like that happens has to do with mids, which was my point. That would be reflected in many crap recordings as well.

You did not understand my point about his old gear apparently which was that even though it was very effected you could still hear it in the toto mix, but when you saw him then and now in other contexts where a bunch of guitarists are most likely also using the local rental amp - I hear the phenomenon I described. It's slightly better with his new setup, than in the old days, but I still hear this. It has nothing to do with fairness, which is a weird thing to bring into the conversation. And if what you saw in glasgow was Toto then you just made my point for me again.
It seem to me there is something about his favoured EQ that has a tendency to get lost in a quite specific way - it could be as you say on certain recording devices, not limited to the handheld iphone, but on these recordings other guitartists will be clearly audible and when I look at their setups - they tend to be ones that offer simpler and more midsy tones. If it's mostly low end and high mids - the tone gets drowned out in settings were many are competing for the same frequencies. Los lobotomies for example usually leave plenty of free space in their arrangements so it's not an issue there.
Yeah he is one of the greats in that style. If you go back to some of the really old live videos and the time he was playing a gibson - those are some classic tones I think ....

Sadly Lukes tone very often never cuts through when not part of a very produced sound image. Probably fairly mid-scooped.
