This surprisingly makes me feel very happy, especially inside. Mario 64 is which I consider when the fine lines between the real world and Mario’s finally began to blur, with realistic textures and deeper meaning. I won’t go into it too much, but Mario and by extension Nintendo is more than just a franchise. It’s home, and I do mean that quite literally. I’ve always felt that these people could exist in our world at any given moment, and it would just be like having someone like the Gaithers and Carpenters as our companions, which are two wholesome (and very much Christian) families, by the by. I’ve even always preferred the original N64 Mario Party trilogy (tetralogy if you count Mario Party 4 on Nintendo GameCube, which very ironically had similar aesthetics to the previous three whereas 5 focused on its current cartoonish roots), since for one thing, I could play as any character, including Princess Peach and even Waluigi (AKA Ruigi), of all people. Later years in my childhood, with my rudimentary knowledge of franchises like WarioWare and Mario & Luigi (which whenever I was playing that was always thinking of better times on MP3 on 64), naturally saw my mind thinking of these characters too being playable - and despite what folks’ popular culture may have had, it’s never really died off; in fact, it has already hit puberty at this present moment. I’ve been determined and persistent in making this dream come true ever since inception very long ago. The icing on the cake is that Nintendo’s franchises, especially Mario’s, have been not necessarily a shelf of video games, but rather more akin to a toy chest filled with all sorts of possibilities for play. Absolutely anything can be done with it - there’s literally no canon at all that must be adhered to when playing with these toys. The story of Mario is entirely your own, whether it’d be Mario himself starting out as a gig as a construction carpenter under the pseudonym “Jumpman” to rescue Pauline from Donkey Kong and of course then moving on to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser’s lustful hands; Mario having started out as Super in the past of Partners in Time already, only to lose his status temporarily when Peach went off to be with Prince Spring in their Happily Ever After, and take out his anger on the Granddad Kong himself, under the “new” straight-and-true alias “Little Mario”. Or, perhaps, the Donkey Kong stories never really happened at all, and Mario was always Super. And more still, Super Mario may have never happened and the Mushroom Kingdom was actually his purgatory after his sudden, shocking tragic death shortly after the original arcade Donkey Kong events. People may call Mario 64 uncanny, but this music to me differs.
