    There's a few more fixes to tackle first, but then the world is our oyster. What mods do you want to see on the Hawk?

      ebay exhaust, and then allegedly you can throw a CG300 big bore jug/cylinder on there to take it to like 280cc or something.

    • @moosecat
      @moosecat ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For a Chinese bike sold on Amazon, also "don't overlook the ridiculous", as I don't think I've ever laid eyes on another motorcycle where the kill switch didn't also disable the starter.

  • @KillerSpud
    @KillerSpud ปีที่แล้ว +61

    To be fair, it is a bit odd that the starter works at all when the kill switch is on. EDIT: I think I'll note that kill switches really are very non-standard but do tend to be similar within a bike style. My old kickstart DRZ uses a pushbutton kill switch instead of a toggle for example, and if you just push it quickly it won't kill the engine. Then a lot of people just use the key switch.

    • @simonkennedy6116
      @simonkennedy6116 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the rare occasions when I use the kill switch, or someone like a mechanic does, I'll never remember to turn it back

    • @n7sithis336
      @n7sithis336 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the same bike and it screwed me over a few times, too. I no longer EVER turn the run switch off. I just leave it on 24/7 and turn the key to turn my bike off lol

    • @rorypassmore
      @rorypassmore ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its normal, my KTM 525 is the same. The key switch is 4 wire and is responsible for activating the starter circuit and killing spark. The kill switch is a 2 wire switch that only kills spark, it is not connected to the starter in any way.

    • @njmxjunkie3128
      @njmxjunkie3128 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s a dirtbike. Kill switch only cuts out ignition power.

    • @69nites
      @69nites ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's completely normal. The system is as simple as possible to allow Trailside rigging to get you back to civilization. Pretty much all dirt bikes the Killswitch is just an ignition interrupt.

  • @MrEiniweini
    @MrEiniweini ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I owned the same motorcycle not the hawk but my personal motorcycle since 2007. I went to start it up this season and it would start fine but then whenever I kicked it into gear it would shut off. I ripped the outer clutch apart. Messed with stuff. Got on the forums for my bike . Looked for the description of my problem and there in white letters it said hey did you have the kickstand up? I face palmed myself so hard! I feel your pain.

  • @HardcoreSlot
    @HardcoreSlot ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I once spent an hour adjusting and testing my clutch with the kickstand down. couldn't figure out why the bike kept dying.

    • @punchbuggyyellow7097
      @punchbuggyyellow7097 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I did that on a ride day, I couldn't figure out why it stopped every time I put it into gear. It was only after I went to put the stand down to get off the bike that I realised my mistake. Never make a mistake in front of a bunch of Aussies. They won't let you know while you're making it but they sure as hell will for the rest of your life after.

    Hawk 250 was great nearly 10 years ago when it came out. And still is today as a light trails and in town commuter. Today you should have done yourself a favor and looked at Templar X 250 as a few hundred more gets you a full sized enduro husqvarna / ktm frame, a true 250cc counterbalanced engine with 6 speed transmission rather than Amazon bikes advertising as 250 and coming with 219cc instead, USD forks, fully adjustable front suspension, fully adjustable rear suspension. About the best damn deal for quality to price at moment. If you want EFI get the KPX250 but it’s quite a bit more expensive for only the EFI difference.

  • @WanderingMagi304

    I have a 2022 Hawk 250 (carbed model) and right now about 3000 miles on it. I change oil every month (usually about 500-700 miles) and replaced chain and carb. I love it. I've never owned a fancy motorcycle, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I still love it. That being said, if you can't turn a wrench don't buy one!

    My starter bike was one of these, it's a good cheap bike made for beating on for budget minded beginners, I sold it last year and got a low mileage crf250l that I've done a large amount of mods to and even put warp 9 Rims on it and it's a blast every time I ride.

    Hahaha you making and sharing the mistake is what makes you genuine. I did laugh as well obviously, would be something I could look over as well. Generally if stuff is replaced, it's generally something easy.
    Excited to see more of this. It seems like a fun dual sporty goofing off bike, which I am looking to get one at some point as well.
    I do want it being road legal with plate and all. Since before I can get to off road places, I need to go over paved roads to get there and since I don't have a van or trailer (yet 😆who knows what i'll be doing) this is the only way for me to get it done.
    As for the dash fitment; I think if you can find the components of the other version of the Hawk. Say the wires of the gear indicator, sensors etc for example, and find a wiring diagram or forum or a video even, you'll be able to do a comparison and with a bit of common sense you should be able to figure it out and get it to work on your Hawk.
    If the engine is the same, which I think it is. It should have a bolt going into the trans on yours, where on the other version there should be a sensor with a wire going to the indicator.
    Curious what you'll find and once again looking forward seeing this coming along.

    If you grease those ground bolts on the coil after removing the rust, they will conduct longer. Same for battery connections. Regular old grease is fine. It will displace easily at pressure contact points but still prevent oxidation. Airbox and filter?

    Dont overlook the small things. I got a motorcycle that didn't run. He said he washed it and it wouldn't do anything after that. Fuses checked out fine. Relays had power to. But the relays shorted out. 27$ later and after sitting 8 years in a barn it started like it was running yesterday. My son and i are restoring it and hes been riding it all summer. He knows to keep water away from the relay box lol.

    huge upgrades for chinese bikes list from my experience:
    -carb/air filter/exhaust (oem exhaust comes choked as hell, so a more "free" exhaust will help it become rev happy)
    -ignition coil wire assembly (yes, the whole thing, it was so shitty in my bike that it felt like a camshaft upgrade, it didnt even reach 9k with the "oem" one comfortably and once I changed it I didnt even realise i was banging 11k on 5th without struggling)
    -gearing and tires, no real explanation needed
    -brake pads/brake fluid
    extra upgrades if you feel spicy:
    - plastic tank and weight reduction in general
    -big bore kits and camshafts are available and do work apparently (havent done them myself)
    -better brake cylinders, relatively cheap upgrade, rcb makes good products for bikes like these (you might have to drill a whole for the rear brake screw)
    - crf/kx/yz/ktm costumes can go in these bikes with a bit of fabrication (and weight savings)
    thats about it, in my experiences they are so bare bones that i view them as legos, you mix and match aftermarket stuff from all sorts of bikes and they just work (for example, my 125 can apparently use the crf125r big bore/cam shaft assembly so i might buy one and send it)

    In all fairness. With those stupid f-ups is how we learn. If I told you how many times I made a stupid mistake that put me back days, but it was solved in 30 minutes, we would be here forever. Actually that is also how I got my first bike so cheap. It had an "engine problem" and it was the crankshaft position sensor which had been disconnected. Took me two days to figure that one out. And the seller lost out on 1000USD. Good times!
    EDIT: WTF?! The nutcracker rock style?! I would've been sooo much more interested in classical music when I was a child if that had been a thing!!! Time to catch-up as an adult hahah

    There was a short between the seat and the bars. Common issue.😂
