    I'd say that this is the perfect lens for somebody who was just getting their first post-phone camera and wanted to experiment with what a Real Camera can do: maybe they're not sure if they want to get into video, or whether they want to shoot street, or landscape/wildlife, or just vacation/party snapshots. In particular, the wide aperture capability of the F1.8 is really a good way to learn about depth-of-field and what all this talk of 'bokeh' really is. Is it going to be the *last* lens you want to buy with your new camera? Definitely not. But as the *first*? Depending on whether or not you know what you're doing and what exactly you're trying to achieve, maybe....

      I didn't think so. He makes a good point.. there's a lot of talk about this being a great lens.. AND that it's cheap... Not that it's cheap, and good for the price. I was pleasantly surprised to hear an honest opinion that was critical. Plus, he offered a better alternative, the RF 35. There is so much hype on the Canon mirrorless stuff it's hard to weed through and find the truly special ones. So, I appreciate it.

    I have 50mm F1.2 and literally bought this lens today. The reason is how compact that is and wanted to have something for day to day, travel, general purpose. Carrying those heavy lenses is exhausting and discouraging for those casual shoot.

    Wrong. Its not only because of the "low price" (which is in fact far from low, considering the EF 50 1.8 STM cost less than half but is THE SAME!)
    Its because of form factor. Combine a RF 50 1.8, alternatively a super expensive 35mm 1.8 IS with a EOS R, RP or R8 and you have a dream point and shoot combo in 50mm/Fullframe or a 35mm.
    Also, i would even say its one of the sharpest 50mm primes i have ever used, especially at F2.8+. Noticable better than the old nifty fifty (the non STM version), anyways better than the horrible EF 50 1.4 "USM" which goes 2nd hand for about the price of a NEW (!!!) RF 50 1.8
    Also, if you are doing focus pulls... have you ever tried manual focus? Its much smoother and precise to control! Its not too slow in AF as well... my EF 50 1.4 was probably even slower!

    Great review and insight. Im a new comer to photography and tried out my wife's nifty fifty EF 1.8 lens on my R8 this past weekend. Me being a newbie and coming from a kit lens, this blew the kit lens out of the water. Even with its limitations, it was a treat finally seeing good photos come out of this camera. Cant wait till i can afford some better glass. Thank you and keep doing what you're doing.

      In my opinion, the 35 is a much better walking-around lens. And it's more balanced. In addition to it's versatility you can record some killer videos handheld.
      I bet that in time you will end up grabbing the nifty fifty just because it's so affordable. But like my video says, if I had to pick one it would be the 35.
      Let me know how it goes and I hope you enjoy the lens.

    So glad that someone else sees this lens for what it is. I was a proponent for years for the EF-50 f1.8, the original nifty-fifty (well maybe not the first nifty-fifty). This is NOT a nifty fifty price/value lens. Its soft, has focus breathing, no weather sealing and all the other things you point out. Picture quality is poor! I wish there was a RF-50 mid-range price-wise between this f1.8 and the super-expensive f1.2. I used the EF-50 f1.4 for a long time and was pretty happy with it.

      Will there be more than one person? 👥
      Is it all talking head? 🗣️

      I would be happy to review the smallrig cage. It's designed to provide a ton of mounting solutions for anything you may want to add to the camera. You can really build it out if you want to. I use it everyday to provide a small amount of protection to the camera. It's not designed to protect the camera. But it's literally a metal cage. I provided a quick video about how I use it below.

    Of all the reviews I’ve listened too I’ve only Hurd that it’s a good beginner lens when you start out and don’t have enough to get an expensive one and also to learn about lenses bc amateur can have a great lens and take bad photos

    we cannot exclude the quality/price ratio when talking about this lens. for that price the quality is excellent, you can't expect more. it's obvious that if it's talked about well it's because of the quality/price ratio. a video would have been more honest where you explained why it's useless for videography... are we really complaining that it isn't weather sealed or that it has aberrations at full aperture?

    Since almost all Japanese 50mm lenses are essentially copies of the century old Zeiss Planar designed in 1896 it is hardly surprising that this lens has many faults when you are looking too hard. Buy the ZEISS Otus 55mm f/1.4 if you want state of the art. At the very least this lens fills the 50mm role admirably at a great price and surprisingly some of us actually have a need for the 50mm focal length where the 35mm is not suitable. In my case I went for a Zeiss ZE classic 50mm f/1.4 in Ef mount.

    • @TMVVisualMedia
      @TMVVisualMedia  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comment. I wonder why 50mm doesn't have IS?

    • @peterchinquan8919
      @peterchinquan8919 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A "standard" focal length 50mm lens on "full frame" camera generally does not need IS unless shutter speed slower than 1/50 second. On "crop" camera this speed is below 1/80 second. Not too hard to take a photo above these shutter speeds without IS. Also "breath control" and avoid muscles "tensing up" helps considerably...I can get down to 1/8 second without excessive blur. However I have come to realised most people who have come from a smart phone camera do not hold their cameras correctly with their elbows sticking out to the sides...This will almost guarantee a blurred photo. I am pretty sure that the user guide of even my most recent and advanced cameras still have instructions on how to correctly hold the camera. Read your manual and you likely won't need IS on a 50mm used on a full frame camera.

    All of these cons you mention are completely to be expected of the lens, no one who has any experience at all would expect more and i don't think a beginning photographer even cares that much. And none of the shortcomings are actual deal-breakers at least not for me. I'm not a professional but i have been a serious hobbyist and done many gigs over the last 15+ years so i do know something about the gear and i'm still absolutely going to buy this one, should be arriving next week actually. To be fair this isn't something i'd buy as new, i got a good second hand deal and i do already own the 35mm for example so this is just an addition to the collection.
    And what would be the alternative for this if you want an affordable 50mm? None of the dark zoom lenses, that's for sure. And if you aren't a professional and don't want to or can't spend thousands on the f/1.2?
    EF versions are always an option but i would think a new RF lens tops them easily in performance and is a delight to carry around. So yeah, i'd absolutely recommend this lens to anyone who's interested in it.

    I think this lens is just fine and for 200 bucks 160 on sale all the time iv gotten AMAZing photos from this lens a 10000 dollar lens isn't going to make you a better photographer automatically and you sound like a high fancy better then thou person dragging on this lens i recommend this lens to anyone that has just recently or within there first few years of taking photos your solely looking at this lens from a professional stand point and it's not that and no one's ever said it is its a great fast lens and if your any good with a camera at all you'll be able to utilize this lens and make great photos not everyone has a budget for l glass or 800 dollar lenses not everyone is pixel peeping and making cinema quality videos this lens is perfectly acceptable and amazing for any person who isn't a pro just tryna walk around and snap photos of there family or events they attend or get together or days nights out on the town. The rf50 is plenty fast plenty sharp and just flat out good and in controlled situations with lighting and everything it stacks up in image quailty to other lenses above its weight class. This video seems to be what's wrong with photography these days making everyone feel like they NEEED to spend thousands of dollars on gear to get photos that anyone would say were good and that's not true i could take the nifty fifty AND HAVE ° to paying jobs and used for portraits and photo sessions and got very very good ohotos and never once has a client ever said i don't know about this you only have the rf 50mm lens so your ohotos are gonna suck or damn is that the 70-200 f2.8 L series canon rf lens niiice other photographers yes clients Never Once. Quit pushing this narrative I get it L glass is amazing and weather sealed and blah blah but they aren't the only way so.eone will have fun with a camera or enjoy photography. Okay that's my rant Thanks

    The RF 50mm is a sharper lens compared to the old EF 50mm F 1.8 it replaces. If you are willing to close it down the aperture one stop, say to F2.8 it will deliver much better image quality. I have them both and concur on your conclusions, the RF 35mm is a sharper and more versatile lens, but the RF 50mm I would not consider it "garbage" or useless. I believe you get what you pay for it

    • @TMVVisualMedia
      @TMVVisualMedia  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am not entirely sure of the actual optics is made of some sort of plastic.
      I do know that higher end L glass has some sort of specialty glass or a coating that makes it more expensive.
      On the Nifty Fifty though the body is entirely made of plastic and not the higher grade composite material. Similar to all the other STM lenses. Still plenty good though.

    I just bought both the Rf 35 and RF 50 1.8 It is my opinion that you're way off on your assessment of the 50mm for photography. Sure, it's not the RF 50mm 1.2 but for the price the results are excellent. Because of it's size, price and image quality I'd reach for 50mm nine out of ten times over a larger more expensive equivalent. If I need absolute image quality I'll use my Sigma 50mm Art 1.4

    Did you really expect perfection for $200? The lens is fantastic for the price. There's nothing wrong with it. You just need to use it more often ☺. But, the RF 35/1.8 Macro isn't perfect either and somehow you love it. I remember trying the old EF 50/1.8 II on my 5D2, it felt extremely cheap. However, the pictures were fantastic. The classic Double-Gauss bokeh, the sharpness when stopped, it's all great (if you know what you are doing). It wasn't supposed to be perfect then and it isn't now. It's a classic Planar and a good one.

      @@TMVVisualMedia Well, I respect your opinion. Thank you for sharing. But, honestly, for what I'm shooting, my EF 40/2.8 STM seems like a much better lens, than the RF 35/1.8 Macro. It is optically superior and $300 cheaper. It's not as fast, but it has no nasty CA or fringing in high contrast detail. No lens is perfect 😉

On the internet you can find awesome pictures made with this Nifty Fifty, with excellent quality. And because the lens is so small and light you get shooting opportunities not possible with cumbersome and heavy lenses.
