The unwritten story here really is the journey from "safe, legal, and rare" to "the human child in the womb is a parasite".

      😢 yes
I remember believing that women wouldn't do this lightly and should just deal with her own soul.
And I stopped thinking about it.
I would never abort, however, I never thought I should demand someone take in, a baby, or special cases, etc.
      But then,
      Safe, legal, rare, became
      Hate kids
babies are the enemy, and a Parasite 😢
Then I started looking more, as I realized how many lies had been told in our culture
      And that's when I realized just what had become from;
      Dafe, legal, rare.
      😢
      Now it's just evil.

100%. It's a horrible and disgusting that abortion was meant to be a lifeline for rape victims but is now celebrated as a casual contraceptive method and babies are somehow harmful parasites.
Like Trent said, the rape arguement has become a smokescreen for infanticide.

A parasite is an invading organism that is from an outside source. The host/parasite relationship is one of conflict. One that involves the avoidance of detection, etc. The uterus is naturally ordered to gestate another life of the same species. A baby is not an invading organism from an outside source. The relationship between a mother and baby is one of cooperation. Thus, the unborn are not parasites.

Post viability means that someone else can take care of the child, it can be dependent on others without the mother.

This is a good example of how poor our education system is and how Liberal Arts should not be neglected in higher education. These students have no concept of how to form a rational argument, because these arguments are not their own. They are just parroting their liberal teachers, so when they are challenged on a point, their only recourse is to get loud, rude, interrupt, attack the person, not the argument, appeal to emotional non sequiturs, etc. etc... It's not a debate or a sharing of ideas, it is just public mental masturbation whereby all truths are mine and self-evident because I believe them and there is no room for discussion about it; it is the parasite of wisdom. Hey Trent, I was the guy who asked you for the photo on the flight to Dallas the other day. Thanks for taking the time to say hi to my wife and I, even if it was brief. I didn't think to say it at the time because I was a little "star struck," but I am very thankful for your important work in the field of apologetics. I could have spent the entire duration of the flight picking your brain were we sat nearer, but I think perhaps God did not want to suffer you my incessance, ha ha. And I wouldn't have wanted to steal your time to unwind, anyways, unless it was solicited.
My main question actually would have been a scientific one - I would have liked to know if you were aware of Stephen Meyer's work regarding the mathematical improbability of the theory of evolution as an explanation for the emergence of man from single celled organisms? His hypothesis was joined by other secular thinkers such as David Berlinski and David Gelernter. My limited understanding of it is that because we can observe the rate of mutations which drive speciation, we can calculate what order of magnitude of mutations would be required to produce man over a period of time, and the conclusion seems to be that while evolution does seem to explain the differences between species in different environments ("fitness") it would also seem to be inadequate mathematically to explain evolution as the main driver which produced mankind/of intelligent design (due to the seeming impossibility of achieving the number of successful mutations required to produce man over the period of time that evolution was presumably occurring in living organisms).
Of course, this doesn't disprove the idea of intelligent design via other currently unknown means, nor does it confirm literal fundamentalist Creationism by any means either. But it was thought provoking, and the information seemed compelling to me, anyways. I would definitely have liked to know what your thoughts on it were - whether you thought it compelling as well, or perhaps lacking - since you have said previously that the Church's lack of position on matters of science was important for you as a convert from Atheism who does believe in evolution. For me, I see the mystery of our creation as similar to the mystery of our transformation at the second coming, the particulars of which St. Paul essentially says (in Corinthians perhaps?) are not really that important for us to know specifically. But, I still very much take interest in it from the standpoint of science, even if it is not an article of Faith. I am not convinced of evolution as it is currently taught and see the specific mechanism of creation as a mystery, but I am an old-earth creationist. Yet my knowledge of these things has been acquired largely in passing, and I am not well studied at this point.
My wife would have liked to know how you liked Allie Beth Stuckey, and what it was like essentially going 2 on 1 with her and James White on the Relatable show (which we have watched on occasion previously). We think Allie Beth just needs a little push to be Catholic, but we think that about everyone, ha ha. I also really want to know what James White is like in person actually, but I told myself I would only ask one of the many questions I could have for you.
Anyways, I know you may not even see this ever, but either way, thank you for your important ministry and work again. You must know this already, but your work touches many lives. Thank you for being a light in the darkness for many....and stay salty. (Mt. 5)

The girl in the r*pe point honestly p*sses me off.
I have a friend who was r*ped by her then partner, she fell pregnant. The r*pist wanted her to have an abortion and she said no, she wanted to keep the baby (not their first kid).
I help look after the kid, I've been there for the kid for her entire life, most days of the week I help look after her and ive pretty much became the male role model of her life. She's the sweetest, smartest little girl and I love her as family.
The idea that this absolute witch of a woman suggests that it would have been better for the mother to do what her r*pist wanted her to do and abort that girl actually infuriates me. The hate I feel for that girl to come in, so self-righteous, as if she has the moral right to be outraged on the matter is infuriating.

okay, just because your friend's rapist was the one who suggested for the baby to be aborted doesn't mean that there is an immediate negative connotation that goes along with that procedure. It's your friend's OWN personal experience and decision with that step to keep the baby and that's completely fine if she wanted to raise that baby. However, that does not mean that abortion is bad just because that rapist told your friend doesn't make it universally "bad". This situation only applies to your friend (and some other applicable ones) that have similar situations. Other women who have been r3ped and conceived SHOULD have that OPTION of either raising their baby or deciding that they don't. Either because they aren't ready financially, mentally, or simply don't want to raise a baby that they did NOT ask for and couldn't care less about. It doesn't matter if the clump of cells has the "opportunity of life", the woman who is actually ALIVE, that the rape occurred to, should be the priority and only HER decision should affect HER body. It's absurd that people out there actually value the fetus more than the women who have already created a life for themselves and are creating a bright future. Also, forgot to add, that girl in the video wasn't just talking about your average 25 yr old who got raped, it was a hypothetical about forcing a 10 YEAR OLD who got r3ped to give birth, knowing she would be okay. Not only are you stripping away that 10 yr olds life, as in her future, that kid has NO concept of the responsibilities of taking care of a child. She is a CHILD, she wouldn't be able to give consent to that responsibility. Overall, if the legal system doesn't let a minor adopt a kid, why the fuck would you force a child to have a one???

The reason is its safer to wait and help that person start breathing again then it is to have to now save two people. You have a few minutes to help a person start breathing before permanent damage.

Since a zygote (the single cell that later becomes a fetus at 5 weeks) has the DNA of the mother and the father (an organism outside of the father's body), the mother's immune system would theoretically recognise it as a threat and try to remove it, but at the same time would try to protect it. It's pretty complex, and I am no expert, but there's a TED-Ed video on it called "The surprising effects of pregnancy"

We all are living in a Post sexual revolutionary world. These young minds have been shaped by concepts borne out of a rebellion against the natural order and moral precepts. As a culture, we emasculated our young men and taught our daughters to rage against the patriarchy. Many Christians have been either complicit or actively engaged in this behavior. It feels like it will take an act of God to convert these passionate young people. I admire their passion. They are just misguided.
I feel like Trent has a more compassionate approach. Which we truly need to present for these young people. They view our position as evil, reprehensible and uncaring. The propaganda machine has done a thorough job of mischaracterizing the pro-life message. We have also not done well to impress the love we have for those who find themselves in such precarious situations. Thank you Trent for approaching this with both clarity and charity. God Bless.

It’s not difficult to view Catholicism as reprehensible and uncaring, to be fair.
Remember that Catholic soldier a few years back who was rendered impotent in an explosion, and then wasn’t allowed to marry his fiancee upon returning to the States despite that fact that both of them were still fully committed to one another and willing to make their marriage work and engage with one another to the limits of their capacity, just as many married couples who struggle with paralysis/impotence engage with one another to the limits of their capacity? Trent even wrote about it - he thinks that the church was correct to deny them marriage.
I’m not bringing this up to abruptly change the subject - I’m just pointing out that if one doesn’t share those beliefs, the church is often experienced as being arbitrarily cruel.
Precepts like that genuinely don’t make this world a better place. They might be correct in accordance with some abstract interpretation of natural law, but the world we’re all spending our time in is worse off for those sorts of things.
It’s possible that God wants this world to be worse off for some mysterious reason, and that being deprived of marriage in this world doesn’t actually matter too much ultimately in the face of eternal bliss in heaven, but that’s a very hard sell to people who may not already share Catholic beliefs. And, frankly, given how revered and special and righteous romantic love can be, it should be a hard sell. We shouldn’t be willing to give up romantic love for just anything that comes along - it’s easily one of the most profound and giving experiences we can have.

@@ecta9604 that was a very thoughtful response. I do agree that the scenario you put forward is a very difficult one and in that regard I can see a singular point of contention.
My experience with the Catholic Church was one of need that they fulfilled. I was 17 and pregnant. They facilitated my adoption. Not only that, but the caseworker went above and beyond in assisting me. I needed a refrigerator for my apartment which she provided (she had an xtra one at her home) and she loaned me her car to use for my drivers test when I turned 18. I was far from being a Catholic then. But years later the memory has stuck with me.
The story of God throughout the ages is fraught with difficult stories. Atheists use these against us as Christians as often as they can. But we are willing to work through their difficulties and not throw the baby out with the bathwater. It is an act of faith to trust God to preserve His church. For me, I have to allow God to shape me, and if he chose to do so through His church, why should I protest?
As to the case of God desiring difficult times, I think He has a permissive will and allows them to help us to humble ourselves. I don’t think He actively wills them. Like those teachable moments as a parent, one is pleased for the opportunity to teach but one doesn’t actively will to encounter them.
As for the couple mentioned in your story, that truly is a difficult teaching but it is congruent with how the church views marriage. I would struggle with this myself, but I submit to the authority and wisdom of the church. I will add the couple to my prayers.
Our goal in life is to become saints and to help others to do the same. The story of God is not always an easy sell, or people would be far easier to convert.

With companies controlling access to information, it’s becoming a complex issue for Catholics trying to navigate moral media consumption. It’s a topic that Catholics don’t really discuss, but I think it's worth exploring. Thanks!

I approach it this way. Someone created a product with the expectation of compensation. I desire to experience this product so I make a copy of it. Even though the seller loses no inventory and I might have no money so he loses no sale, it is still theft because I am gaining the experience without the commensurate compensation to the creator that they expected. From that perspective piracy is always a moral wrong.
This perspective more specifically applies to media and the issue of the you will own nothing model is more complex but it boils down to the same principle. Instead of piracy as a solution to this model, the most moral way to combat it is through advocacy for a return to the true ownership model. Por ejemplo, instead of pirating adobe suite software in response to their anti consumer and anti ownership practices and perpetuating adobes industry standard monopoly, you support and own other programs like affinity or clip studio paint. The moral reality of piracy as theft is avoided, Adobe's monopoly is challenged, and the subscription model is put to the test by true ownership showing itself to be lucrative and worth pursuing for corporations.

What it's more akin to is me letting my brother play a copy of a video game I purchased or inviting a group of friends over to watch a DVD I purchased. What happens is a friend on the other side of the world legally purchased a copy of the product, and in doing so has the right to share it with whomever he wants, just as in the first two cases.

People always focus on the claim that the fetus is analogous to an "invader" of the mother's body. They never think to apply the symmetrical principle that the mother would then be unjustly enclosing the fetus' body within her. We only look at the one side of the coin. If someone has a bodily right not to have someone else in them, then you also have a bodily right not to be encompassed by someone else. So the fetus would have the right to kill the mother! Absurd. I am actually working on a paper to explore this idea during my PhD studies,

@@alistairkentucky-david9344 fyi anatomically, the fetus isn’t inside the mother. The birth canal and uterus is an invagination of the embryologic layer called ectoderm while the fetus is forming. Essentially this portion of the mother’s anatomy wraps around the baby. If the developing baby were inside the mother’s body, it couldn’t come out without cutting into the skin.

I’m just wondering if he holds this stance in the book, has changed his stance, or doesn’t mention the idea of personal identity.

Thank you Trent for sharing this video! Abortion is absolutely evil in every possible way, no matter the circumstances, and I fully stand with the Church's teaching that every human life is sacred from conception. It's refreshing to see someone like Charlie Kirk stand up for the truth and expose the horrific reality of abortion. We need more voices speaking out against this atrocity, and I'm grateful for this platform continuing to uphold the dignity of life. Keep fighting the good fight!

If they are talking about how ectopic pregnancy is an abortion it isn’t a viable pregnancy. Abortion you choose to end that life in ectopic pregnancy you didn’t get that choice because nature chose and the baby didn’t make it. It’s so callous to compare abortion with miscarriages. These kids lack so much empathy.

@@xmqxs7355 A fetus is a human. It has the DNA of a human, not a dog, cat or any other species. It is not the mother, as it has it's own unique DNA distinct from the mother and father that it will have for the rest of its life. From the moment of conception the zygote has all the DNA it will need to become a baby, it just needs time to grow. The problem is, people speak of a fetus as if it is some other species or just some excess cells of the mother's that at some point becomes human, but this is scientifically false. The definition of murder is the premeditated unjust taking of a human life. Killing a helpless baby, no matter how small, would fit that definition.

The viability argument is moot, because being attached to and reliant to one's mothers is required as part of all humans development. Its not a step that can be skipped over, and every person alive now was once connected to their mother. So it makes no sense to say this stage is non-human. Like it's optional or something. Its integral to every persons existence.
It seems to me like the very fact that the fetus can't survive on its own is all the more reason not to sever the connection.

The parasite argument is far more common and insidious than you presented it. It’s a common argument that liberal academics have used for decades, and have redefined the definition of parasitism to do so by trying to remove the intraspecies requirements. Just like they redefined “woman”, if you’re not aware of the background you will be subject to an argument from authority.

No one ever talks about the unconstitutionality of Roe, the issue with Blackmun's majority opinion pulling ideas and penumbras out of whole cloth; substantive due process and the fact that there was never any federal push for abortion rights in the 70's. Yet the whole decision was utilized to concoct "rights" that were developed by the judiciary and legislative processes that were not within their purview to do. But, it is clear that if the state gives the right, then the state can take it away.
