I think whats also interesting to me is that maybe the Devs for Prime 4 maybe wanted to revisit the original game to get ideas for what made this game tick for people. Working on a Remastered version of the original game was probably a smart choice for them.

This is also the reason i think we will see Prime 4 before the 2 & 3 remasters.

Shadowdrops are by far the most exciting releases imho. Not only do they demonstrate an outstanding amount of confidence in the product to bypass the whole marketing hype and compel the company to actually get it right, but they can also save a lot of the money said hype burns. I hate marketing and all the made up crap it comes littered with with a passion, and the fact they didn't do that here makes that much sweeter.

      1. Update it so that 6 or 8 players can fight, thus giving Nintendo a multiplayer shooter avenue and allowing basic modes like team death match and etc.

My personal theory for why they shadow dropped this... Since there's a lot of different control schemes, as the trailer put it, they're using the remaster as both a release of their remaster, and as a test to see what sort of control scheme/set up will work best for when they finally give an update on metroid prime 4.

I *highly* suspect that the Prime remake started out as a tech demo for Prime 4's engine. Retro probably still had the original assets and source code for Prime, and the key developers for the remaster were people hired around the time of the announcement that Prime 4 had started over development with Retro in early 2019. It makes sense that as part of engine tests, they rebuilt Prime and were testing to get the game feel right for Prime 4. With help from Iron Galaxy, it makes sense that it got expanded into a full-on remake and got released the way it was.

I played with twinstick controls, but due to muscle memory from Trilogy I tried ball jumping with gyro. And Samus jumped. That felt so amazing, made me feel a big piece of the love that went into the development. Also crazy how they figured to have standing jump and ball jump on different face buttons! Who does that, and why does it make so much sense!? Once I got Boost Ball it just clicked, this is the obvious control scheme for Morph Ball. I wonder how many hours of design meetings went into just that...
And of course keeping even glitches in, like the fast missiles exploit. They didn't have to do that, but quick kills on Baby Sheegoths sure are still a thing I can do thanks to it! Though I think it's actually a little bit slower than before, they may have tweaked it! I didn't try early boots skip, but at least the side hop version doesn't work anymore since you don't dodge with scan visor. I believe there was another way which took advantage of the ship high jump, but eh I'll leave that to the speedrunners.

The feeling of exploring a beautiful but hostile alien planet is amazing. Returnal gets it right as well, even if that's a lot more frenetic at its core gameplay loop. I'd actually compare it more to Shadow Of The Colossus as far as game feel. Exploring forgotten architecture in a once thriving land, while occasionally fighting enemies or a giant boss. So, to start off, my experience with the Metroid franchise has been fairly minimal. I always thought Samus looked cool, and whenever I had the chance to play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at a party with friends, I definitely gravitated towards her (in her regular outfit of course) a lot of the time, mixing it up occasionally with BotW Link. Then when I had my own Switch, and I had the online service, I played a little bit of Super Metroid, but ultimately didn’t get very far into it. I anticipated the release of Metroid: Dread with much interest, and later used some of my MyNintendo points to get the really nice Metroid: Dread posters (because, again, I just think Samus looks real cool). I’d heard the rumblings about a potential remaster of Metroid Prime for quite a while, and perhaps I considered looking into getting it when it released, but ultimately I didn’t dwell too much on it. And now we arrive at the Direct yesterday. And the game looks gorgeous. And it looks like something I could really get into. And then, it’s shadow-dropped. At $40. And suddenly I just had to have it. Now. So, I made a deal with my friend; I had $35 worth of LEGO VIP points lying around that I could use for sets, and my friend, being very much into LEGO (as I am), agreed to trade $35 worth of Nintendo eShop money that he’d buy for me, for that $35 LEGO money. And so, transaction complete, I went ahead and bought Metroid Prime, for the low low price of $7.79. And I’ve been having a blast playing it. I feel like I’m among the exact demographic you talk about in this video, that has little to no experience with Metroid, but when this opportunity came up, it inspired me to just go for it, and now I’ll be hotly anticipating the (hopefully) future Metroid Prime remasters, and Metroid Prime 4. So yeah, I guess I’m a little bit of a Metroid fan now :)

Considering that it looks like most, if not all, of the assets have been rebuilt for Metroid Prime Remastered it makes total sense that they have only released the first game. The amount of time and money required would have been huge, even before taking into account porting the game to the Switch and add all the new rendering tech, assuming they didn't just rebuild it completely. The budget was probably pretty high, which makes the reduced price a little surprising. My wild theorizing based on the credits showing that it was developed by a team at Retro Studios with support from Iron Galaxy and some others is that this is a test drive for Metroid Prime 4's engine.

The amount of effort that went in to this is highly impressive, I'm playing the game right now and there's so much attention to detail that it feels like a new game. The HD rumble is the best I've played so far in the console, the sound had been improved, assets/occlusion/AA/particle effects/etc make the game look better than do many games out there (which is a testament to how good the game was originally as well) and it always runs silky smooth at 60 fps. You can select many controller options... GameCube style (and you can even use your GC controller), twin stick controls, mixed style, Wii style... It is highly impressive and keys be honest, we're not used to Nintendo putting so much effort like this. I hope s while new generation gets hyped for this series, yes, the remaster is THAT good. Bonus points as well in the fact that there's literally no other hand Luke Metroid Prime out there, there haven't been any spiritual successors unlike the 2D games that have been arguably out-Metroid'.

Samus Returns was supposed to be the safe return to form for Metroid, and it bombed big time financially. I feel like Nintendo probably thought Metroid was just dead at that point. Yeah, the Switch is a hybrid, but 99% of my usage is in docked mode. I didn't play Zero Mission or Fusion until they released on Virtual Console, and I've never played 2. But look what Nintendo did, and how can you make a series succeed this way:
      1 - console
      2 - handheld
      3 - console
      4 - handheld
Zero Mission - handheld... then VC
      Prime Trilogy - console
      ...the dark ages...
      5 - hybrid
I respect the people who played all these games, but even if I could afford every piece of hardware, I was never getting a GB or a GBA. So I never had any hope of playing the series as intended. And when they did bring back Samus Returns, it still wasn't for me. (Yes, supporting the 3DS over the Wii U was obviously a no brainer, but what about those of us who bought a Wii U?)
Anyway, I do think it's fair to treat the 2D, Prime, and other titles as three separate categories. But the only one that was properly managed was Prime. Gamecube to Wii, and then everything compiled on Wii. You could always stay caught up with the series on one device. It's like they haven't even realized that all these games could easily fit on one cartridge.
Anyway, even without playing it, I always got the sense that Samus Returns was the worst one. You might be right that its quality tanked it. But I still would have bought it if I could play it on a TV. I don't think I'm alone.

I agree with all of this! I have never played a single Metroid game and Dread is on my list. But because I've never been part of the series I have not rushed to get it. But after seeing this Direct, I am 100% buying Prime Remastered like, NOW. And maybe this will be the hook that gets me in the series.

If you like, Super Metroid is on SNES Online. It’s lauded as one of the greats in the series.
