Thank you for the compliment. Yes unfortunately there are very few shops that will work on these cars today. these are classic cars at this point and I encourage all classic car owners to learn how to do the maintenance on their vehicles. These cars are very easy to work on and there are plenty of online resources to help you. I would encourage you to go ahead and get some tools and start learning yourself. You will appreciate the car much more when you learn to work on it yourself and you can always email me if you have questions.
Thank you Jarrod I really appreciate that. This car will be ready soon and man it is awesome! Tonight I am changing the motor mounts and the rear sway bar end links.
That's pretty neat how easy those bearings are to remove, regrease, and if need be replace. I spent about 6 hours of torture to change the wheel bearing on my subaru. I should probably look into why my wheels are so hard to rotate. I was surprized when he spun the wheel and it free-wheeled like that. My 300D wheels take some muslce to turn over, probably why the car also doenst coast much and will deccellerate if you take your foot off the go pedal.
Im becoming addicted to your videos... great video... great job on the car Surely i will do the same on my car! I also have a 85 300cd turbodiesel coup It would be great if you could share with us all the references of all the replacements parts you used on this suspension renovation. I saw the final result and i love it I want the same in my car
@@woodsandbarclay just one question on tools. Detaching the lower ball joint, you used an unusua upright l ball splitter rather than the scissors type. Is this necessary or would the scissors type work.
Yes I hammered out the lower ball joint by putting a steel slug on it and banging it out. That's really the easiest way to do it I'm not familiar with the "scissor" tool you mention.
@@woodsandbarclay I was referring to detaching the balljoint from the vertical strut. Ive now watched every minute of your work and will be telling the mercedes benz club of UK how good your TH-cam channel is. Ps. If you come across a low mileage right hand drive del. Oh yes I have a special tool that does that the tool is made by OTC I think. Thank you so much for the compliments I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos. I will definitely keep my eyes out for a right hand drive car!

Hey, what benefits can one expect from a front suspension rebuild ? So far, i've seen that my upper control arms bushings are shot, so i will be replacing those, but I don't know if I should just do it all? Thx and great video. PS: I don't understand why you change the whole upper control arm, bushings are available and the piece itself seems very solid.
You change the entire upper control arm because the ball joint on the original control arm cannot be changed. The benefit of redoing all the front suspension is better handling better steering better ride quality and safety. Keep in mind your front suspension is 40 years old. When your front suspension is 40 years old it's time to redo it. Nothing lasts forever and the fact that it has lasted 40 years is incredible.
Thank you! Your videos are like a dad showing how to do the stuff, it's really great. One more question if I may; I have a weird issue that I haven't heard anyone talk about. My engine has a weird idle where it "pulsates". It started after I did a small maintenance (filters and engine oil). The only thing I see is a minuscule leak at the intake of the transparent fuel filter but would that cause it? Here is a video of it: drive.google.com/file/d/15Y8ekrrZUTUY92wlZjho13cDh1onLog8/view?usp=sharing Thx again for all the videos and tutorials@@woodsandbarclay
Ok, I will report back once i make everything tight and nice. it did that before leaking. But maybe it was already enough air to mess things up@@woodsandbarclay
Air in the system will not "mess it up". It will just not run right. If you fix your fuel system so air is not getting into it then you should have no problems.
Fantastic video and workmanship bro! Are those wheels 15 or 16" Bundts? Which of the two wheel sizes offers optimum ride height (obviously depends on tire profile)? In other words, which of the two (15's or 16's) would / should one opt for to obtain better handling and cosmetics without interfering with steering capabilities, while maintaining a standard ride height for w123 Euro spec? She's currently wearing 14" bundts.
The wheels on this car are the factory 14-in bundts. You're not going to gain any performance or handling if you go to a 15 in.. these are not high performance vehicles. It really doesn't matter what tire or wheel you run. It only matters what tire and wheel you run if you have a high performance vehicle that actually utilizes the tire and wheel. These cars are designed to drive on the highway or go to the grocery store. You don't experience any high performance driving in one of these vehicles so don't waste your money getting high performance wheels or tires.

Hi, I watched your videos about 1985 Mercedes 300CD, you are very lucky to have a very low mileage car in that condition. I have a 1986 Mercedes 300SDL and it gives me noise that's coming from rear wheel bearing. My mechanic said to replace the wheel bearing which is not a simple job. He is not willing to do that also he said that he does not have the special tools for that. Could you please post any videos on how to replace rear wheel bearing for rear wheel drive car (300SDL)? Thanks.
I would love to be an apprentice and learn all these nuggets of knowledge on MB service
I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos maybe one day to shop will be picking off and you can come for an apprenticeship
I’m so glad to find some videos working on a coup. There’s not too many differences, it all works the same but it’s nice to see some better reference
Yeah you're right they're pretty much the same the only tricky part is the rear door panels.

Sounds like your brakes are dragging or somebody really cranked down the spindle nut and your bearings are extremely tight.

That is a Mercedes specific spring compressor. You can get it from Gedore tools. Cost about $800.

I didn’t realise that you could lift the car up from the sills. Is this the recommended method.
Yes you can lift cars from the pinch weld. Most Mercedes have little pads in that location designed for the lift to push up on.
