Each individual card was their own personal truth. Mitch-LGBTQ+ and he handed it off to Scott-Also LGBTQ+ then he flipped it to Man and handed it off to Avi with Man who then flipped to Jewish then American, then off to Kevin and he gave his three personal truths American, Black, and Christian, and then Kirstie with Christian, Latino, and Woman. It was to show what they all have different but also in common. Diversity yet all HUMAN.
You should react to their cover of Radioactive, it shows Kevin with his cello plus they collaborate with Lindsey Sterling and her violin. It’s amazing!
Re Scott in this: he has such a strong voice that it's easy for him to overwhelm a song. If you watch the Sing Off contest videos, where they first came to the public eye as contestants, you'll see the judges admonishing him about taking over the piece. So what you likely noticed was his exercising iron control over his voice in this calm, restrained song. He's learned such a lot since then.
Not sure if you know Scott and Mitch for awhile formed Superfruit. They did fun stuff and music. Please listen to Superfruit’s cover of RISE. Wowzer!!!
The wall of sound that they do towards the end is also seen in Mary Did You Know, Amazing Grace and Hallelujah. It is normally done to devastating emotional effect in a good way. Kevin is a savant. He plays multiple instruments, speaks multiple languages including Mandarin, writes and arranges music and graduated pre-med at Yale. If he takes up painting or sculpting we may have to call him DaVinci.
Kevin is very multi-talented. He played saxophone in a concert at Carnegie Hall. It seems he can play most instruments to some degree. He speaks several languages including Chinese. He was in med school when he took a time-out to see if this gig with the unknown group Pentatonix would go somewhere.
Kevin and Avi both came in with incredible backgrounds when the band was set up to compete on the Sing-Off season 3. Not many groups where you can see their very first live performance together. Here is Kevin's background pre-Pentatonix Kevin Olusola, Pentatonix’s beatboxer, is a Yale graduate (pre-med). He speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese, loves classical music, and plays piano, cello, and saxophone. He had performed at Carnegie Hall twice as soloist on the cello and saxophone and has appeared on NPR’s “From The Top.” In 2009, he won second place in an international cello competition hosted by Yo-Yo Ma. In 2011, his “Julie-O” TH-cam video was featured by CBS, AOL, Huffington Post and the Washington Post, among others. He was named one of 100 “History Makers in the Making” by TheGrio and was chosen by Quincy Jones to represent him in concert at the 2012 Montreux Jazz Festival alongside Bobby McFerrin and Chick Corea. And this is Avi's Kaplan began singing in eighth grade and performed in Mt. Whitney High School choirs in Visalia, California. At Mt. San Antonio College (Mt Sac) he expanded into acappella, classical, pop, country, jazz, gospel, rhythm-and-blues and even comedic songs. In 2008 he joined Fermata Nowhere, a group that became the first community college a cappella entrants to win the ICCA. Avi won an award for “Best Rhythm Section.” which the ICCA had changed to allow them to award it to a vocal bass. Avi later joined Singcopation, a jazz ensemble that won the Monterey Jazz Festival Competition in his first year. He had performed at venues worldwide, including New York City's Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. was a member of Mt. SAC’s Singcopation champions which won best jazz distinction at the 2010 Monterey Jazz Festival and eight Downbeat best collegiate jazz vocal group awards; Fermata Nowhere’s winning the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella in 2009; and the Chamber Singers and Singcopation’s clean sweep and Grand Prix Award at the American International Choral Festival in 2011.
I discovered today your reactions, and since pentatonix is my favorite group ever, I got happy!! It’s always nice to see someone who knows about music appreciating our idol’s work! If you want and have time, you should check “Daft Punk Medley”, “Aha”, “Love Again”, “Can’t sleep love”, “Dance of the sugar plum fairy”, “Say something”, “Amazing grace” and many others, all of them are so good, and they slay every music style they choose!! Oh, and I loved your reactions 🥰🥰
Hey there, nice reaction! You mentioned someone commenting on Kevin’s cello...the PTX cover of Shallow is a great one and includes Kevin playing his cello. Also I just looked through your list of reactions and saw several Billie Eilish songs. The PTX cover of When The Party’s Over is excellent as well.
Whenever I hear and see this performance, I think to myself how brilliant John Lennon was and how brilliantly Pentatonix presented the message and this timeless song.
What a great reaction to a phenomenal performance. And Kevin..... he is astoundingly accomplished and talented. He plays the cello and the saxophone, and has even played Carnegie Hall. He graduated from Yale. He speaks mandarin fluently. He beatboxes and sings - and can beatbox WHILE playing the cello.
Yes, Mitch is the only one in the band who is lefthanded, and Scott is the only one with blue eyes. (This is a video in which they make great use of how diverse a group of individuals they are.)
From what I've heard,, when the group started, Kevin, the beatboxer, didn't sing because he felt he was not as polished as the other members. Since Avi was his roommate when they went on tour, he and Kevin began to do voice training and because of that, soon developed into an excellent singer in his own right and began to have his own solos.
Actually they were roommates in Los Angeles as were Mitch and Scott separately and that continued for several more years. The earliest couch videos are done in their living room. For Daftpunk it was filmed in Avi and Kevin's kitchen and recorded in a closet. Radioactive there is a Behind the Scenes of recording the cello again at Avi and Kevin's apartment.
@@leighc9004 me too and let's not forget about Natural disaster and Can't hold us. There's something very special about their old stuff that is very addictive.
First, I love your reactions. They are thoughtful and educational. Second, I love this version of the song. The wall of sound they create is amazing. Third, I love the video-WOW. PTX is the epitome of inclusion-5 different folks who come together and harmonize. I’m new to PTX and just love them. Kevin does play the cello on a few songs. He plays on the new one-Thank you, which is an original.
I love the rousing crescendo after Kirstie's card. It's beautiful and powerful, and for me, a metaphor for the strength and beauty that results when we come together. It's the difference in their voices that creates those stunning harmonies, and likewise, the differences in us as people that hold our brightest future. Harmony is built on contrast, and cannot exist without it.
Great reaction. Thanks. They did a beautiful job with this "Imagine" cover Later this year will be Pentatonix 10-year anniversary. They released an amazing new album, The Lucky Ones, 2-12-21. All of the songs are on TH-cam. Four of the songs have videos out now.
Can't tell you just how happy your comments on Avi mean to me. Giving him the lead intro for this was such great choice...smooth, warm, caring, simply giving us all a warm hug. The harmonies are just brilliant and Kevin also gets a little solo....Brilliant production. I'm loving your 'reactions'
One of my favorite original songs of theirs that doesn't get enough reactions is Run to You, in case you wanted to see them do a song of their own to contrast with the covers you've reacted to so far.
Yeah, I had a little happy moment when I saw Mitch was left-handed too - I think it's something you notice if you are left-handed yourself. 😁 And yes, Kevin is a machine! Not only can he beatbox, play the cello (AND beatbox WHILE playing the cello,) and sing, he also speaks five languages fluently.
My 1st exposure to Pentatonix was a Christmas song, Carol of the Bells. I was amazed then And always am at how they keep parts moving and so precise. Love Avi and Mitch in this piece.
So powerful, so emotional, so well arranged, and with harmonies that just went another step above. A PTX classic, and so deservedly so. Your comments just spoke so clearly of all of this.
Hi Ashley! I totally didn’t even realize that I’d been signing. I know a small number of signs and I can hold a very basic conversation. It’s fun to learn 😊 Thank you for watching!
If you are interested in Kevin's cello playing, I would suggest listening to his cover of John Legend's "All of Me". He basically layers over himself until I believe there are 4 cello tracks going at the same time. Absolutely mind blowing... I have never, ever heard anyone make a cello "sing" like he can. He also has incorporated his cello into songs that the group has done together. Their cover of "Radioactive" with Lindsey Stirling is absolutely crazy; love hearing the cello and violin playing off one another. I have just recently stumbled upon your reaction videos and I am loving them! I have been a huge Pentatonix fan since the beginning and it just warms my heart when other people appreciate their musical magnificence!!
I highly suggest you check out the video “Aha- live at the Star Vista”. You’ll get slapped by Avi’s ridiculous bass and Mitch’s crazy high range and vocal runs. The goosebumps will run rampant.
This is one of those songs that brings tears to my eyes every single time I hear it. Such a masterpiece. The meaning behind the song and the heavenly melodies mixed so well that it touches your soul, its insane. I love them and I love this song much.
You have just scratched the surface of their amazing repertoire. For a great change of pace, I recommend "Sing", an extremely upbeat original of theirs.
A great reaction once again. It is always so amazing to watch what they can do to the most iconic songs. If you haven’t yet please react to “Amazing Grace”. It’s unbelievable.
More nice examples of Kevin’s higher range: Amazing Grace (PTX) and Down (where also plays cello and uses a looping machine- not sure what the actual term is. This song is on his own channel). Another place to see Scott’s upper register, albeit with less of the tight control he has in this one, is Defying Gravity on his Superfruit channel (Scott and Mitch’s side project). The looser control is more than made up for in fun and hilarious costuming. Mitch, however, *kills* that one. Separate note: I was so excited to see you start down the Pentatonix rabbit hole! The only two artists I (obsessively) watch reactions of are PTX and Billie Eilish. Your Billie reactions are among my favorites. You pick out a lot of details to comment on that other people blow right past and I love how expressive your face is. I *loved* seeing your first “Mitch-slap” and Avi “brain melt”, which I liken to the physical effect you can get from the deep vibration of a cat’s purr. I can’t wait to see where you go next :) Forgot to add: I know how much you love live versions and you’ll find a lot by PTX. A key point with this group is that they only record songs that they can sing live. Scott’s huge range helps with that since he can cover the bass lines while the usual bassist sings a verse. There’s a great live version of Hallelujah (from a Christmas tv special, I think) that shows just how tight they are. They also have several live “evolution” videos where they mix multiple songs together. Those really show off their masterful arranging and insanely tight timing. The Ariana Grande evolution video is my favorite even though I know very little of her music.
🤘🤘🤘 Loved the video 😎😎😎 I know you couldn't hear me yelling at the monitor when you didn't have your headphones all the way on before the video started to play, and then you slipped them into place at the last second. (my inner voice said, "oh sh!t he heard me! That gave ME goosebumps!!! 🤣🤣) They totally knocked this iconic song out of the park like you said. 100%
Daft Punk won them their first grammy ad is worth a watch. Sound of Silence and doing a comparison of the video version with the live version of Hallelujah is also interesting. They do a nice, one-take version of Gotye's Somebody That I Used To Know too.
Not sure if your interested in kind of non music related videos to get to know them, their story, and see them more as individuals and their personalities, but if you are I would suggest these they are all amazing: “Beginners Guide To Pentatonix”, “An Unhelpful Guide To Pentatonix”, “Song Association”, and “100 songs in 10 Minutes”. Loved this reaction and I can’t wait for more! 💙
'Mary did you know ?' is a good Pentatonix song and another acapella group I think you would like is ' Home Free'. I particularly like 'All about the base'.
Idk if you're still tracking the comments on this one but there's an amazing cover of Black is the Colour out there that Avi did with Peter Hollens and it's just so smooth & rich you'll wanna melt
There is a video of Kevin Olusola playing the cello and beat boxing at the same time. He wrote it himself. It’s called “Julie-O”. Also check out Radioactive. It has both Kevin playing cello and Lindsay Sterling (I think she was America’s got talent) playing violin. SO GOOD!!!!!!!
Mark Summer is the person who wrote Julie-O. Kevin added the beatboxing accompaniment. If you want to see a Kevin original composition with him celloboxing, check out Renegade on his channel.
I really feel like this song more than any of the others was Kevin's announcement to the world that not only am I gonna blow your socks off with my beat boxing but I am also an amazing vocalist as well! Great vid!
Imagine... fantastic cover from PTX with such a strong personal message from each member just by holding their own personal card. ❤️ HUMAN-Loved it! Check out their cover of “Oh Come All Ye Faithful” on their Christmas album. They put a Jamaican or similar spin on it and I think it sounds great. The video looks like they are having so much fun too.
If you're looking for more let me suggest some of my personal favorites that are less often mentioned: Aha! (Imogen Heap cover), Water (original), Thrift Shop (Macklemore, early performance, video is fun but just simply them sitting together singing and goofing around), and Starships (Nicki Minaj cover, very fun video with a hilarious storyline), White Winter Hymnal (Fleet Foxes), Papatouai (Stromae, performed with Lindsay Stirling on violin and Kevin on cello.) I have to stop there or I'll just list all their songs!
Huge PTX fan and loving that you’re reacting to them. They are such a diverse group individually but also vocally and musically. They can tackle pretty much any genre of music you can think of. They’re pretty amazing. You should check out ANY of their evolution videos. You can’t go wrong!! Speaking of diverse, here’s another reaction request. Ez Mil is a Philippino rapper/singer/heavy metal artist that is fairly new on the scene in the US. He’s young, very versatile and full of bars, but has a beautiful singing voice and guttural metal voice too. Most people react to “Panalo” on the Wish Bus first which is rap, then move on from there. Enjoy and get ready for lots of views! 😁
I actually cried the first time I saw this remake. It's ok that you paused it before you did too bro hehe. It's a powerful thing. They do a really good remake of Shallow too btw.
I haven't had the opportunity to read through all the comments yet (enjoying watching the evolution of another PTX fan), but I highly recommend digging up the vids of the group on The Sing Off. Their performances were a bit rough compared to what they are producing today, but it is easy to see the shape of things to come.
Avi Kaplan the original bass singer starts this one. Please do a reaction on Avi's solo after leaving Pentatonix called A Change on the Rise. Amazing and shows his versatile voice.
You had mentioned that some members left in a previous vid I think. It was just Avi. Avi was replaced with Matt. He's the new bass singer. I don't remember the whole thing but at the time he said he could not maintain the schedule that PTX had since they were touring. He had less time with his family. Now you know that Avi is solo and sometimes sings with Home Free. Love your vids!! Binging them today.
I agree 100% that inclusion should be just a given. I love the message in the video too. How they are individuals but all the same as humans. I love it. I also agree ... The penmanship on the letters is beautiful!!!
Intersectionality, visually explained.
I have loved this video for just this. Love it
You gotta see their cover of come along, its absolutely incredible.
Come along is one of my favorites and it seems like not enough reactors actually react to it.
Agree, Come Along is such an amazing cover that is seriously underrated
Jumping on the "Come Along is so great and under-appreciated" train.

Don't watch them if you don't want to get spoiled, there are a lot of Pentatonix songs in there you haven't reacted to yet!
'Mary did you know ?' is a good Pentatonix song and another acapella group I think you would like is ' Home Free'. I particularly like 'All about the base'.
I ment to suggest you check out Daft punk..the sound will blow your mind and the video is a masterpiece...cheers from Scotland x
Run to You, Run to You Run to You!!
Check out kevins channel called "KO" I recommend the song down, friends, or sign of the times, one man band right there.
La La Latch, Havana, New Rules/Are You That Somebody, Amazing Grace, Coffee in Bed! All great and shows their talent! Thanks for reacting!
the message they give is so powerful. Different, but same.
Highly suggest checking out some of Kevin's solo videos. His channel is KOvers. Must watches include Down and Sign of the Times
I really feel like this song more than any of the others was Kevin's announcement to the world that not only am I gonna blow your socks off with my beat boxing but I am also an amazing vocalist as well! Great vid!
Nice reaction as usual, but the message with their cards was represented of THEM !!!!
Love your reactions. Thank you!
Thank you Kevin!
Imagine... fantastic cover from PTX with such a strong personal message from each member just by holding their own personal card. ❤️ HUMAN-Loved it!
Check out their cover of “Oh Come All Ye Faithful” on their Christmas album. They put a Jamaican or similar spin on it and I think it sounds great. The video looks like they are having so much fun too.
Mitch..slap...that was funny.....your reactions to pentatonix are great to watch...
Thanks Nicky! I’m having so much fun checking out their stuff 😊
You should check out say something or shallow! Kevin cello boxes (plays the cello and beat boxes at the same time)!
for something different from them react to Can't hold us by Macklemore, It's pretty cool
THEY NAIL EVERYTHING!
I haven't had the opportunity to read through all the comments yet (enjoying watching the evolution of another PTX fan), but I highly recommend digging up the vids of the group on The Sing Off. Their performances were a bit rough compared to what they are producing today, but it is easy to see the shape of things to come.
This one makes me cry, every time, especially the end.
You need to check out Kevin's channel is Kover... Start with Sign of the Times... Mind blowing
I love your reactions, and i love pentatonic, they are incredible. Oh and you are cute af aswell
Thank you Phil! Such a kind thing to say!
Avi Kaplan the original bass singer starts this one. Please do a reaction on Avi's solo after leaving Pentatonix called A Change on the Rise. Amazing and shows his versatile voice.
Talking about needed to remember to pause and the arrangement there is an unseen member Ben Bram who does that incredible work.
As others have said. Please react to Superfruit (Scott and Mitch). In particular their version of Rise. It’s incredible. ♥️
For more information on Kevin he not only plays the cello he plays the saxophone he graduated from Yale and he speaks Mandarin
I love there version of little drummer boy
Great reaction! Subscribed for more Pentatonix
