My 2 roborovskis live in the IKEA Detolf and they love it. They use every inch of space because they use to live in a tiny pet store cage. Their travel cage is bigger than the cage they use to live in😂
My hamster was completely unfazed by his five foot by two foot double story rabbit hutch. They are used to miles and miles of dessert after all! I agree about providing lots of hiding places.
I had the funniest thing ever. My mum asked a woman about lage cages and the woman said if your going to have a large cage you need two place many food bowls and water bowls or else the hamster will be very tiered to go to there food and water and DIE. I felt really bad for her.
ERIN! Your eyes look INCREDIBLE in this video!!! :D I thought this was an excellent video and very informative! I know when Scarlet is up she wants to boogey!!
I've heard that glass cages aren't great cause there's not a lot of ventilation like the bar cages? I've been thinking of moving my Syrian hammy to a glass cage, she's gotten quite big and feel like she's bored & there's not a lot of space and she needs more space for toys and exploration. However, I'm worried that she may get stressed from moving to a new environment plus the ventilation rumours? Can anyone shed any light on that?
Ventilation is only an issue with very small glass cages (which aren't suitable anyway) or fully enclosed cages like vivariums which are designed to have less ventilation and more humidity. If you have an appropriate sized cage and a mesh lid or open top you won't have any problems. As for moving cages there is a video on my channel offering tips for reducing stress in this situation :)
Ariel and Friends Unfourtanely 20 gallons is too small. it used to be the minimum but now the minimum went up to 450 sq inches, so you might have to invest in something bigger for your dwarves
I had tubes in a spot in my cage but then my hamster got a bit bored of them and so one day I was cleaning them and I removed them from the cage and I put substrate in replace. The next morning, I see that my little hamster made himself a little hole/nest! It is so cute! He sleeps there and when it gets too hot in his little hideout, he just goes out to his hole and sleeps there! He is adorbs!
I took one of those burrowing natural cages, took a extremely huge tall tank put shavings in and but the narrowing natural things under the shavings and it's like a real burrow! my hamsters love it.
+Brooke Alexandra Allott add up the length and the width ,of the cage, in inches, the minimum size a hamster cage should be is 365 square inches in the UK. My Syrian hamster has 3/4 of a detolf.
hi Erin, I wanted to say thank you for all the hamster care tips they really work and I finally gave my hamster a good cage because the one it used to have was a critter trail. my hamster is not really a escape artist so I leaved the top of the bin open but the thing is that the hamster wheel I used to have only goes on mesh bars and I do not have those so I put a zhu-zhu pet hamster wheel. the wheel is pretty big and its just like the old one just way bigger and my hamster is now living a better life. I try to make her short life as happy as possible with the little money I get.
uhhh so I have a ikea detolf as a cage and I went to the store to get a 40 gallon tank to connect to make a fun little burrowing place for my ham. so as I was buying the lady asked me what fish I had and I said I was using it for my hamster and she flipped, she said no hamster should ever be put in a tank and guided me to the critter trails.. she said a ham can get lost in a cage like that! BS!!! shes insane! I wonder how many people she's told off, I feel horrible. I ended up buying the tank and gave her a little talk before I left.
I believe it's very much tied to the individual. I have had many female hamsters, whom seem to be fine with a large cage, they're often so high-energy. However, when I got my current male hamster and plonked him into the Detolf with lots of toys, hideaways and stuff, he was... SO scared, he was jumpy and wouldn't take well to handling even after 2 months in the Detolf. So, I went out and purchased a small cage with room for a running disk, house, food/water, sand bath and a tunnel. He became confident, he took very well to his new smaller home and he became the most loving, adorable hamster I've ever had the pleasure of living with! His main interest outside of being handled, is his running disk. My female hamster however, whom now live in the Detolf, is more into random acts of destruction so it suits her to live in a huge habitat... (^3^) *Note, the "smaller cage" I purchased is still big, it's more than half the size of a detolf.
bastyon25 Which is completely and utterly cruel! Imagine if they did that to their kids😂 Child: Mummy, can I have a big bedroom and bed? Parents: NO JIMMY. WE DON’T HAVE THE MONEY TO SPEND IT ON yOu.
As a parent I am adamant my boys learn about creating a safe and appropriate habitat for our pets. If parents do t want to do that, they should not get pets for the family.
There’s like very cheap ways to do that like using a bin cage, buying PVC pipes and cardboard boxes, popsicle sticks etc rather than spending a ridiculous price on a critterjail. I hate when parents don’t think of cheaper ways to PROPERLY house an animal or stick to using things only marketed to that animal specifically. Like you can’t use plastic bins as cages bc they’re not meant for housing animals for example. Or you can’t use a tank bc it’s meant for reptiles and fish. I feel bad for the children who can’t give their hamsters or any pet a good life bc of their stubborn parents.
True, they can be scared or shy if there is alot of open space. But like you said with a domestic hamster their going to be comfortable if they have a big cage and lots of things to do. You dont wanna get a small cage because they can get stressed and get wettail!
Your eyes are gorgeous haha, anyways, great video! I used to get a few comments saying the detolf was 'too big for a hamster'.. It always confused me as to why people would think giving more space ( that like you said, is not just bare space) would be negative.
Great video Erin! I think it's important for people to know this isn't true. A lot of pet store employees will sell customers tiny cages using this reasoning.
Hamsters love big cages. My little hybrid dwarf lives in a 1,953 sq inches big selfmade cage and he loves it. He runs around the whole night and search for his food I put in a lot of different places to keep him entertaint. the loves to dig and build tunnels and to take sandbaths in his giant sandbath :) The bigger the better and your hamster will be really thankfull for that ;)
ILYSM Erin But the other day I was at a festival and a gerbil was running around and we tried to catch it to take it to a local pet store but before we caught it a guy put his boot on the gerbils little paws,My family was sad about that but the guy said "I didn't hurt it doe"
lol i had to watch it twice in the beginning because the nose bleed comment distracted me... then i ended up staring at your nose trying to figure out why people thought that in the first place (lots of red/brown in the background enhances other reds/browns the same way the blue/grey in the background enhances your eyes- sorry...i'm an artist with ADD....) Anyway, good video! I'm here because I want to get another hamster and my knowledge of them is stuck somewhere back in the 1990's when i had one as a kid..... everyone kept them in fish tanks with cedar bedding and toilet paper tubes which of course is heavily frowned upon now. So far all i can find in the shops are either really small cages or really expensive ones. I think I will do better making my own! Thank you for the video!
how do you know if your hamster likes it's New cage I have a too small cage (CritterTrail) and I am making a bin cage for my Serion . I just want to know so I know if she likes her new bigger cage.
I know this answer is late but it might help other people reading who have the same question. You can tell they like it if they spend a lot of time exploring it, modifying it by moving houses and bedding around, chewing up their toys and houses, hiding their food, and cleaning themselves in various spots. Those are all signs that they feel comfortable and safe, feel ownership over their environment, and are having fun. If they just run out of their house to grab food and then go straight back to their nest to do everything, they feel insecure. It's normal for them to do that for a few days after getting a new cage or having their cage cleaned, but if it doesn't improve then something about the cage makes them uncomfortable. As someone already said, if they're spending a lot of time climbing or chewing the mesh/bars, or seem to be pacing, then they're very bored. Get them a new toy or object to play with, or a bigger cage. The toilet paper roll toys on Erins channel are amazing and cheap, and I've recently started putting my hamsters food and treats in origami balloons and boxes as well. She loves it!
My hamster doesn't sleep all day. I have no idea what his sleep schedule is. I always hear him eating and digging in his house during the day time. He also goes out for drinks of water. The only thing is that he doesn't run as much during the day. In the daytime he runs for maybe like 10 minutes at a time but at night he runs for many hours or sometimes even the whole night.
I got my hamster a 20 gallon fish tank and he sleeps next to or on top of the little house it's so funny and my cat sits on o bookcase and love to watch him and when i put him in the ball my cat goes and hides.😋
bexx hordle as long as its high enough I'm pretty sure some pets are fine (note that I'm not sure) I believe a rabbit or guinea pig nearby won't be bad, most small animals as long as they aren't able to reach the area I think are fine
So I went to the pet shop today, and a woman told me that the cage I was considering buying (which I believe was a partly glass enclosure, with a little bit of wires on the top) and she told me “don’t buy it ! I had an even smaller one, and my dwarf escaped by squeezing between the bars !” The heck ?! The Oder model was ???? square inches (some thing close) And she thinks the hamster enjoyed it . I an so disappointed 😔 I only humans like her had brainz 😔 Also, the one I was considering was well over 450 square inches !!!! I looove it so much. Poor hammy that had to suffer in that critter trail mini 😣 it hurts my heart 💔
Hi I just wondered if you have any tips on keeping hamsters or bringing them home. I will be getting a hamster in a couple of weeks and want to know everything there is to know!(:
one of my hamsters needs to be in a smaller cage, he's not tamed due to being bullied by his siblings (he is a robo ) causing him to be shy of everything , so I give him what makes the signs of stress from him be non existent. I try keep him in a quite area with food and drink and loads of toys, I'm just trying to give him a much easier life as it must not have be easy to get bit and clawed at by his brothers. ( he has scars on his back from it )
Hey Erin! Just a some quick questions: How many sunflour seeds is my hamster aloud in a day? and What can cause my hamster to be hyper? My hamster has been very hyper (Running out his house on his wheel off his wheel in his house and back out) and keeps repeating it and I just cant get my finger round why he is so hyper! If you answer that would be AMAZING! Anyway keep the good work up and stay awesome! ~Demi
Sorry I'm not Erin, but your hamster could be stressed. If he is running about that much he could be looking for a way out. Or it could just be his personality, which he will probably grow out of when he gets older. As for sunflower seeds, I'm not sure. I feed my hammie his own food mix for treats, try that if you're worried about overfeeding.
Sunflour seeds are his treets he is his own bowl of mixed food in there. and thank you for the information! I will start to play with him more often when he comes out in the day
demi5431 No problem! Glad I can help. You can feed him sunflower seeds quite a bit. The chances are he won't over-eat, because Hamsters horde all of their food.
Ok, i know I'm not Erin, but I'll answer anyways... what type of hamster is it? If it's a roborovorski hamster, that may be it because they are super active.
+MelodyHernandez hernandez Substrate is the material that goes into the base of the animals cage to absorb moisture, provide warmth, comfort and a place to burrow :)
substrates are like a fancy name for bedding. you use it for any animal so they Can lay there feces, sleep, feel comfortable, and just have it for material.😃
What if my hamster lives in a 77 gallon tank, there is lots of hiding spots and toys, food and water. But she stays in her sleeping house until about 1 am, and stop at 6?
I got my Chinese hamster the zoozone one at the time I thought it was massive until I found the barney cage.. I asked for advice from fellow Chinese hamster owners and kept getting told "NO! He'll be too scared" or "ARE YOU TRYING TO KILL HIM?!" I thought about this decision long and hard and looked at his zoozone which had no wheel that couldn't stand up or clip onto anything because had no bars and he was just left with a boring flying saucer. I decided to get the barney cage for another hamster I was interested in and decided to give it to Ash he loves this cage more than he loved his zoozone he is out more and keeps me up at night He has all his favorite toys but now I feel bad because he has the same old boring toys which I will try and get some more for him around his birthday (looking to spend at least £30-£50 on toys for him) so he isn't bored anymore.. I just ordered a new ball because I lost a door to the old one and now he can't run about while I clean his cage but yeah I agree with you the more toys, tubes and hiding spots the better.
Chelsea Walker Most natural substrates hold really well, aspen, carefresh, aubiose, megazorb and soil all create very stable ground for burrowing in :)
I was wondering if a hamster(or mouse in my case) would feel save in those plastic tubes. Mine are made of completely clear see-though plastic. Does that count as hiding spot?
+Dragontail1992 I had a tube for my Syrian(named Plushy) she got stuck, we had to take it apart, and we never let her near a habitrail again. Edit: Another thing to note is Plushy isn't even fully grown yet.
My hamster feels her clear see through tunnel is a good hiding place lol. I think she knows she's safe in her cage, but the physical feeling of being in a tiny space feels comforting so she goes there if there's a sound or smell she doesn't like.
Hello Erin, are pottery stuff like dishes and little hide out things ok to use on hamsters? Please answer this question because I might get a hamster next week or so. Thanks.
Big cages (minimum 450 square inch in the US) ARE good with the CORRECT enrichment and excursions, (ex 6inch minimum bedding, safe children’s place sand, minimum of 8inch wheal for dwarf and 12 inch for Teddy bear hamsters)
I have a question, My hamster is currently in a small circular cage. I will upgrade later. She is a Dwarf Hamster and I gave her a small wooden chew. She is not chewing on the wood. Is that Ok ?
Hi Erin i got my roborovski hamsters in March, one died because my brother got a hold of it. The remaining hamster was doing well with taming but as I have got busy with schoolwork I haven't been continuing with the taming process, and she is extremely scared. What should I do?
+ErinsAnimals Hi Erin! I recently switched over from a small, store-bought hamster cage to a 20 gallon aquarium. My hamster seems to be enjoying it much more, and I am able to fit more interactive toys for her to play with in it, but it contains smells unlike the wire cage. I have ended up having to completely clean out her cage once, sometimes two times a week. I know it's not good for them to constantly have their habitat changing, but the smell is BAD. I use SoPhresh Hamster bedding currently, should I switch over to Aspen? What do you recommend? I really want to avoid switching her back over to a small cage, but is that the only way to avoid the smell? Thank you!
It's lack of ventilation in your tank that's making it smelly. Do you have a solid aquarium lid on the tank? If so, go online and look up "mesh fish tank lid (insert gallon size)", you'll find pretty cheap lids made of wire mesh that's to small for the hamster to escape from, but allows enough air to go through. Or if you think your hamster can't climb out anyway, try taking the lid off entirely. Try spot cleaning as well, which is going in every other day and picking out a few dirty things so you don't have to do as many big cleanings. If the smell is still a problem, look up tutorials on how to make a storage bin cage so you can make as many ventilation holes as you want without sacrificing huge space. Hope that helps!
+Armored Wings Thank you so much! I have a mesh lid currently, but I am definitely going to spot clean it more often. I really appreciate your answer! :P
I am going to get a robo dwarf hamster and I'm also planning on getting the ikea deloft like the one behind you would you recommend any theme to a cage or just make it feel like their natural habitat?
7 views. 12 comments? TH-cam is broken. xD Thank you, Erin, for the tip! My cage was really empty. Guess it's time to go spend more money on my hamster~ ^^
My cage is 60x40 and right now I can't buy or make a bigger one. It has 2 hamsters in it. Father and son and the son often squeaks very loudly but the father doesn't hurt the little one (the small one is about 3 months old and the big one is about 8 or 9)months old. Is the cage alright for them? They only have one bowl of food and one water bottle but they are not territorial and rhey live on the same nest. And should I worry about the squeaks? My father and my mother often sleep late and they've never seen them fighting. Please help...
What type of hamsters? If they are dwarfes, they would need either one cage each that it 60x40cm or one single, no levels or add-ons, large space of 80x50cm. And 2 of everything. If they are syrians/chinese hamsters, they WILL need a cage each at least 70x40 (over 80x50 is the best) :)
Thank you for the advice because I will be getting a hamster or ore like a dwarf hamster and I feel like I need to know this so my rodent will feel as happy and safe as possible 😀☺️
*So when I was getting the stuff so I could get my hamster, the person that was helping us said that they should have the critter trail (the ones full of tubes), and we just went with what she said, we had her for 6 months now and she seems fine, is it ok? *
My 2 roborovskis live in the IKEA Detolf and they love it. They use every inch of space because they use to live in a tiny pet store cage. Their travel cage is bigger than the cage they use to live in😂

I’m setting up my detolf cage today! Yay!
My hamster and gerbils live in huge bin cages and they love it!
Aesthetically x I don’t have any gerbils and have never owned any, but don’t Gerbil easily chew through plastic?
That is so good. I was thinking about getting the detolf too. I have a bin cage

ErinsAnimals Is a 20 gallon glass tank too big, too small, or just right for two Winter White dwarfs?
Ariel and Friends Unfourtanely 20 gallons is too small. it used to be the minimum but now the minimum went up to 450 sq inches, so you might have to invest in something bigger for your dwarves
ironic toast Um.. So is 450square inches too small if I have a mother and 6 babies?

No lol it's Rotastak 😂
+N/AA She's mentioned Rotastak in her videos before and described it as that though xx
No a critter trail is to small for a hamster to live in
I thought she was talking about the ovo cages
TBH this is the most informational hamster vid yet. I'm getting one and I've been doing tons of research. This really helps. THANK YOU!

A good idea is probably getting a fairly big aquarium and fill it up to about half, so they can dig a lot but also be on the surface :)
Omg the video started and I was like...... how beautiful are your eyes ♡♡♡

how do you know if your hamster likes it's New cage I have a too small cage (CritterTrail) and I am making a bin cage for my Serion . I just want to know so I know if she likes her new bigger cage.
Bar chewing and bar climbing is a sign of stress

Hi Erin! I love your videos, you give out really great advice and they are very enjoyable!

Great video!!!! a really good topic to choose so many people really believe this myth. and it was nice for you to in the shot again. :D
I got my hamster a 20 gallon fish tank and he sleeps next to or on top of the little house it's so funny and my cat sits on o bookcase and love to watch him and when i put him in the ball my cat goes and hides.😋
dede vega that’s too cute!
I think your cat is planning to eat your hamster...
I buy Detolf (in ikea) and my hamster now LOVE her cage. Thank for open my eyes, Now Zelda (my hamster) have a Detolf and Habitrail for her cage.
YOUR EYES ARE SO PRETTY!
can you make a hamster cage out of a bin but leave the top open ?
lil bit For dwarfs no they will likely escape they are escape artists X3
Plasma Pawz101 that's not true, many people have open top cages (as long as you don't have other animals) it just has to be the right hight
You just have to get a realy tall bin, then you can. :)
lil bit yes but make sure it is tall and they can not climb out I would not because they are escape artist
bexx hordle as long as its high enough I'm pretty sure some pets are fine (note that I'm not sure) I believe a rabbit or guinea pig nearby won't be bad, most small animals as long as they aren't able to reach the area I think are fine
Hey i just builded a 540 square inch bin cage! From 271 square inch! My 2 dwarf hamsters were happy
The Oder model was ???? square inches (some thing close)
And she thinks the hamster enjoyed it .
This video really helped me!
one of my hamsters needs to be in a smaller cage, he's not tamed due to being bullied by his siblings (he is a robo ) causing him to be shy of everything , so I give him what makes the signs of stress from him be non existent.
~Demi
He sounds as if he's bored. How big is is cage?
Could you do a video on hamster behavior and decoding the actions they make and what they mean? :) please! :3
you should do a video where you tell us what hamsters can have and cant have.
what are substraights? sorry I live under a rock
+MelodyHernandez hernandez Substrate is the material that goes into the base of the animals cage to absorb moisture, provide warmth, comfort and a place to burrow :)
+ErinsAnimals so basically bedding?
+Candy Cane yes it is bedding
Haha!It's ok.
substrates are like a fancy name for bedding. you use it for any animal so they Can lay there feces, sleep, feel comfortable, and just have it for material.😃
You are literally my role model
Is that...The Sims 3 music in the background? Also, NO NOSEBLEEDS? Like, never ever? That's crazy.
+lily skutelnik Me either. But I hate blood so it's good lol.
What if my hamster lives in a 77 gallon tank, there is lots of hiding spots and toys, food and water. But she stays in her sleeping house until about 1 am, and stop at 6?
Cheesy Games/draws hmmm, what type of hamster is it?
Hamsters sleep at night so It’s ok!
That are a lot of letters
What kind of substrate would hold a hamster burrow and not collapse? Great info as always:)
Chelsea Walker Most natural substrates hold really well, aspen, carefresh, aubiose, megazorb and soil all create very stable ground for burrowing in :)
Thanks Erin!
great information! i just realized how pretty your hair is!
I was wondering if a hamster(or mouse in my case) would feel save in those plastic tubes. Mine are made of completely clear see-though plastic. Does that count as hiding spot?
tubes shouldnt be used apparently for syrians. have have gotten stuck and suffocated.
Ya those are harder too find though
+Dragontail1992
I had a tube for my Syrian(named Plushy) she got stuck, we had to take it apart, and we never let her near a habitrail again.
Edit: Another thing to note is Plushy isn't even fully grown yet.
Well you could try it, if your mouse doesent feel safe, burrow it a little in the bedding.
My hamster feels her clear see through tunnel is a good hiding place lol. I think she knows she's safe in her cage, but the physical feeling of being in a tiny space feels comforting so she goes there if there's a sound or smell she doesn't like.
You look so beautiful in this video!!
your eyes are goals tho ♡
Please can you do a video on hamsters diet on vegetables I REALLY need to know what vegetables are good and what are bad for them 😊
Thank you so much Erin! You have inspired me to get a hamster!
Hello Erin, are pottery stuff like dishes and little hide out things ok to use on hamsters? Please answer this question because I might get a hamster next week or so. Thanks.
Yes, but you either have to have no paint on it or have pet safe paint.
They're fine
Big cages (minimum 450 square inch in the US) ARE good with the CORRECT enrichment and excursions, (ex 6inch minimum bedding, safe children’s place sand, minimum of 8inch wheal for dwarf and 12 inch for Teddy bear hamsters)
Did you watch the video?
I love this video!! This helps prove a myth wrong! U go ErinsAnimals!
I have a question, My hamster is currently in a small circular cage. I will upgrade later. She is a Dwarf Hamster and I gave her a small wooden chew. She is not chewing on the wood. Is that Ok ?
Great video! Very informational 😊
Your eyes omg! Video content was very helpful, but your eyes! GET IT GIRL!
Great video. Lots of good information.
Can you please do a video on how to take care of blind hamsters? I'm going to get one soon and maybe some tips could help? Thanks!! :)
Love ur vids getting detolf tomoz thanks for posting so many vids luv you
I'm about to purchase the IKEA detolf cage. How much bedding required for this cage for 6 inches of bedding?
+Geo B You're welcome!!
+Geo B Hey is SopPhresh a good bedding because I was looking at it to get a price range to try and convince my parents to let me get a hamster
Im getting my hamster a 6ft tank tomorrow and im soooo happppy
Very good video Erin, it's such a sad thing that so many people believe this though
Make a video when your hamster is building it's cottage

Hey Erin, great video, I have a question, is a fish tank ok for hamsters? :) thank you.

Isn't it the Habitrail or Rotasak Hamster Cages
They are hybrid dwarves, but they are dad and sons and they get aalong great!
they are not territorial at all
I've already done that, but thanks for the information. By the way I hado no idea that was even possible!
That's good :)
I just learn it a few months ago too :D
Thank you for the advice because I will be getting a hamster or ore like a dwarf hamster and I feel like I need to know this so my rodent will feel as happy and safe as possible 😀☺️
Thank you Erin
2:31 when they are feeling Fretined.

*So when I was getting the stuff so I could get my hamster, the person that was helping us said that they should have the critter trail (the ones full of tubes), and we just went with what she said, we had her for 6 months now and she seems fine, is it ok? *
