  • I leave the Kawishiwi River behind and paddle and portage my way through a series of small lakes towards Little Saganaga Lake. Will I make it to Little Sag before the big storm hits?

    I know making these videos is hard work, but it is much appreciated. You've inspired this 54 year old man to buy an ultralight canoe and start planning a week in the bwca this coming fall.

      Make that "54 year young man" :) . My job is done :).
      hard work but fun... and rewarding when the work is appreciated.

    This was really good Larry! I really enjoyed watching. I can now appreciate everything you are doing. During our trip I kept thinking of you and thinking you did all this alone. Well done Larry. Great film. Thanks

      Thanks for watching and commenting. I plan to get back to canoeing as soon as the lakes thaw -- which could be a while!

    It must be nice Larry to go on a 40 rod portage and find it is only 25. Yahoo. Thanks for the trip.

      4 sure! Always great to find the portage is significantly shorter!

    Hi Larry,
    As always nice to where you have been. Your stills at the end are the best ever. FYI, we'll be entering Ep 23 this year 8/16 in that red Souris River. Will spend some time with Heather prior. Hope to possibly meet you if are in the area . Steve Shapiro (FB)

      Thanks Steve! Sounds like we'll have overlapping trips again, time-wise in any case. But many miles away from each other. I'm planning a 2 week solo entering at Sea Gull on or about 8/17, doing a loop that will take me through Ottertrack and Kekakabic. One of these years...
      Mudro's a great entry point. It's probably about time I got back into that area.

      Oh yeah, very noisy night. I've started working on the next one. Have a few other things getting in the way so not sure how soon it'll be. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    We are planning a 10 day in either late july or early August of 2017. Heard the mosquitos aren't too bad at that time - but I'm skeptical. We want to go at a time when the bugs are slowing down but the water is still warm enough to take a dip. Thask fo the speedy reply!

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mosquitoes shouldn't be too bad by the end of July. However, Horse and Deer flies still may be a problem then. By mid August, they're all quieting down. As I said, there will be some still around, you'll get bit some, but they are tolerable. The water stays "warm" for quite awhile. I've even taken dips in late September before... although, admittedly, it is cooling down by then and the dips have been brief.

    Thanks for another great installment. I am planning a trip in late September to Lower Basswood Falls. Your videos help me with the wait until then.
    I have been shopping for a radio for following the weather. What radio do you use and are you listening to local stations or NOAA?
    Thanks again for bringing your adventures to your followers.

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Ridgerunner! I'm using a Motorola handheld GMRS/FRS radio (Midland GXT600) that has a weather band... so, I'm listening to NOAA for the forecasts. The radio is one of a pair that I bought a number of years ago so I could keep in touch with a trip partner. I long since partially drowned, and subsequently lost, one of the pair. No one to communicate with on a solo trip in any case.
      NOAA seems to do a pretty good job of predicting when rain will move in... not so good on when it will leave. Sometimes, it's tough to get a good signal. Have to hold the radio at just the right angle in just the right place. But, I can usually get enough of a signal if I really work at it.

    Hey Larry, great videos and stills!! Not once so far have I seen you hang a food bag, or even seen you eating. So, I've come to the conclusion that you're just not human. But seriously, what did you bring for food on a trip that long?

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Oh, I'm human all right. I usually do instant oatmeal in the mornings, freeze dried food (fdf) in the evenings (Mountain House). For lunch, towards the beginning of a trip I have summer sausage and cheddar cheese on a tortilla. Later in the trip, I use the packaged tuna fish salad on tortillas. I also take along plenty of trail mix. I pack the above in bear proof containers (Counter Assault Bear Keg). I use 2 of them on a 2 week trip. Everything except the fdf fits in the bear kegs at the beginning of the trip. I figure the fdf packages are pretty much odorless so take them in a separate dry bag. I set the kegs and dry bag out in the woods away from the kitchen and tent areas. As the trip goes on, I gradually transfer the fdf to the kegs.

    Hi Larry. If it's ok with you, I'd like to paint one of your stills at the end of this video? If not that's ok too. Please let me know what you think? Thanks Larry. Going to start part 6 soon. Mike

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, no problem. Just make sure you send me a picture of your painting when it's done. :) And, thanks for asking!

      +nibimocs thanks Larry. It's your picture, so I would always feel Id have to ask. I sure will take a picture and send it. I just have to pain it now :-)

    How are the mosquitos in August? Thanks.

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      By mid August, there are generally still a few bugs, including mosquitoes, around but usually not much of a problem.

    What do they call the style of your canoe?

    • @nibimocs
      @nibimocs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a modified Kootenay (various ways of spelling that) design. The original koot is 15'. My friend who built this spaced the forms 13" apart instead of 12" creating a 16'3" version. Of course, the extra length makes it an inherently faster canoe so I call it a "skootenay" :-) . She weighs in at about 40 lbs. Nice to look at, fun to paddle and not too bad on the portages.
