  • Camping in the countryside of Japan is simple and beautiful and in this video we share with you where and how we camped in Chichibu, Saitama. If you are traveling by tent or campervan in Japan you will definitely see some amazing countryside and will be able to take advantage of the many onsen's around the country!
We got to eat the famous kakigouri or shaved ice in Chichibu, and hiked up Hodo mountain. We spent the evenings relaxing at the Matsuri No Yu onsen, and spent our nights camping in a tent at the beautiful Hashitachikawa campsite.

@@RoyandAimee They didn't have the onsen at Seibu-Chichibu Station, and the express train from Ikebukuro is new, but other than that it looked the same. We used to dive off the rocks into the Ara River in Nagatoro...after seeing some local kids do it...a little further upstream in Kami-Nagatoro, away from the tourists. Anyway, loved your video. Thanks

Thanks for watching! We booked over the phone (in very broken Japanese) two days before we went. It might be fine though to go without a reservation in non-peak times (during the week, non-holidays) as it was a fairly easy-going and quiet campsite. Thank you for watching! So glad to hear our video inspired you to go there. Unfortunately, they don’t have showers at the campsite. We went to the Seibuchichibu Ekimae onsen, next to Seibu Chichibu Station to get clean. It was a little bothersome to go there at night because the trains don’t run that often but if you have a car, it’s only a 10 minute drive away. I don’t believe they did rent camping stuff like that, sorry!

    • @RoyandAimee

You can catch the train from Ohanabatake Station in Chichibu to Nagatoro Station - it takes about 25 mins. The river is a pretty short walk from Nagatoro Station and the start of the trail up the mountain or the ropeway is about a 15 min walk from Nagatoro Station. Hope that helps 😊

      Hi Ted, thanks for watching!
It's a very small campsite operated by an older Japanese lady - so the campground doesn't actually have a website. If you Google 'Hashitachikawa Camping Ground' it will be the first result and it has a mobile number to contact. You can call that number to create a booking - Although the lady doesn't speak any english so the conversation will have to be entirely in Japanese. We took our own tent because I don't believe they have tents there available for hire :)
